Kya & Xavier: It's Always Been You (Life As We Know It Book 1) (11 page)

“So you and Ethan
seem pretty cozy. Is he still just a situation?”

“Girl you have no
idea. I have seen the light boo.”

“You're slow.” I
said and then laughed. I was sitting upright on a pile of pillows next to Toni
in her bed with my knees propped up balancing a bowl of popcorn between my
chest and my thighs. “So what makes you so sure this time? I do recall having
the same conversation about Ant, and Ty before that.”

“Girl you making
it seem like I on some free love kind of stuff.” Toni said and then grabbed a
handful of popcorn.

I laughed really
loud. “No I'm not. I'm just trying to figure out why you trying to go ring
shopping already.”

“I can't even
explain it. He's just so….so….Ethan.”

“No you didn't.
Girl you are so gone. So Ethan? What the heck does that even mean?”

Now Toni was laughing. “I told you I
can't explain it boo.”

“Well you need to
try because it's only been a hot minute and you trying to send out wedding
invitations.”

“You know how
you're with someone and it just feels right? Like everything just fits? Well
that's how we are. I feel like we've know each other forever. He's so different
with his mean self always acting like he’s running things.”

Toni said sarcastically and then laughed.

“He's not mean.
He's just not like those punks you usually deal with who let you run all over
them. You got a real man girl he's not with that punk stuff.”

“Whatever girl, no
man can run this.” Toni said and then slapped her thigh.

“You're right no
man, just one man named Ethan Evans.” I said and then laughed. “He has you in
check and you know it so stop frontin’.”

“Well at least I'm
not alone in that club. Looks Zay’s got you locked pretty tight these days. So
I guess that means his Kya wannabe is out the picture?” Toni said referring to
Xavier’s last distraction Tori.

“I guess. He
hasn't really said much about it and I haven't asked but he said it's just us
and that's how things have been lately so I don't know.”

“You believe him?”
Toni asked a little more serious now.

“I want to.”

“But?”

“You already know
the
but
. We've been there done that
so many times and it always ends with him and some trick.”

“So why try
again?”

“It's all I know
and at least with him I know what I have. It's not perfect but it's us.”

“I feel ya but if
he does that crap again Ky I swear I'll kill him myself.” Toni laid her head on
my shoulder, “and no matter what you always got me.”

“For life. “ I
said.

“For life.” Toni
agreed

I woke up with a cramp in my neck. My
phone was in my hand placed on my chest and Toni was lying next to me with her
head on my shoulder. I didn't remember falling asleep but I was seriously
regretting it because I had apparently slept in an awkward position all night.

I climbed out of Toni's bed and
almost knocked over a half-eaten bowl of popcorn in the process. When my feet
hit the floor I bent over and grabbed my calves to stretch my back and then
extended them over my head and leaned back as far as I could without falling
before I left for her own room.

The second I was back in my room I
climbed on my bed, grabbed my body pillow and wrapped myself around it. It was
6:00 in the morning and I had another hour to sleep before it was time to start
getting ready for my eight o’clock class. Days like this made me regret having
my classes scheduled so early.

“You have class in like twenty
minutes.” Toni said standing over me after I had slept through my alarm.

“What time is it?” I asked still half
asleep.

Toni looked down at her phone and
then back at me. “7:38.”

“Crap! Why didn't you wake me up?” I
yelled, rolled off my bed and frantically began to get ready for class.

“I just did.” Toni said calmly and
then took my spot on my bed.

“Thank god I took a shower last
night.” I said as I battled with a pair of black leggings and then a pair of
gray and black Nikes. After I had them on I rushed into the bathroom turned on
the water in the sink, pumped a face wash into my hands and the rubbed it on my
face before I grabbed my toothbrush, layered it with toothpaste and shoved it
in my mouth. When I was done brushing my teeth I grabbed a washcloth from under
her sink and washed my face.

“What time is it?” I yelled to Toni
as I pulled the hair tie out of my hair to release my ponytail. I untwisted the
top of my coconut hair pudding and the stuck two fingers in it and scooped out some
which I rubbed in my hands and then into my hair.

“7:44” Toni yelled from my bedroom

I brushed my hair back into a
ponytail. As soon as I was done I made my way back into my room, took off the t-shirt
that I was wearing, yanked a gray American Eagle sweatshirt off a hanger and
pulled it over my head. Ready in record time. I picked up my Nike hat off the dresser,
my book bag, phone and keys.

“Dang girl, you're a pro at this.”
Toni said unmoved by my current frantic state.

“Lock my door. I'll see you later.” I
said without really looking at Toni and went running out of my room.

When I reached the building that my
class was in I checked the time and it was seven minutes after eight. I had
three minutes to get in the class room before my professor locked the door. She
was the only one that I had who actually cared whether or not we showed up
late. I rushed out of my car threw my book bag over my shoulder before made a
mad dash up the walk way towards the door and just before I reached it, I heard
someone call my name.

“Sup ky, you're rushing for nothing,
class is cancelled.”

I turned to see Travis one of my
classmates behind me.

“Are you freaking serious?” I said now
extremely annoyed, “I rushed over here for nothing.”

“I feel ya. I did too. She didn't
email us until this morning.” Travis said.

“Well I guess that's a wrap for me.
I'm out.” I said still pissed.

“See ya Ky.” Travis said as he took
off towards the student union building.

I made my way back to my car fuming
and unlocked the doors. I had an hour until my next class but didn’t want to
waste time driving back to the dorms only to have to come right back so I
opened my book bag and pulled out my psychology book, threw it in the passenger
seat and then locked my doors. I figured that I would just hang out in the
cafeteria until my next class. When I reached the Café I went through the line
to get coffee, found an empty sofa outside in the lobby and sat down. It was
early so there was barely anyone around and I was glad because I didn’t feel
like talking to anybody. My morning had been officially ruined!

-------

“What room is Kya in?”

I was done with my classes for the
day and was currently sitting in our living room with the main door to our dorm
propped open so when I heard an unfamiliar voice ask what room I was in I stuck
my head out to see who was looking for me.

I immediately focused on Tori and
some girl that was way too large for the leggings and fitted top that she was
wearing walking towards me.

“Can I talk to you for a minute?”
Tori said with a massive attitude when she reached our door.

“About?” I asked pissed beyond
recognition because this trick was actually at my dorm.

“I’m sure you already know.” Tori
said sarcastically.

“I’m listening.” I said and folded my
arms across my chest. Tori was standing just outside of my dorm room with her
friend standing directly behind her glaring at me.

“So what’s going on with you and Zay?”
She asked.

“I think that’s a conversation you need to have with him and
not me.”

I’m going to effin kill him for this trick showing up at my dorm. I
freaking swear
.

“I’ve tried but he’s got his head
stuck so far up your butt all the time instead of dealing with our situation so
I’m just coming here to tell you face to face that you need to stay out the way
and let him be a man about his.”

“I don’t know what the hell you’re
talking about but like I said before sounds like this is a conversation you
need to have with him and not me so if you’re done please get the hell out of
my space.” I was feeling hot all over with my fists clenched at my side. I had
already began envisioning contact with them and Tori’s over processed face.
Where is Toni when I need her!

“Look I was trying to be civil about
this but since you want to flex let me break it down for you. Me, Zay and this
baby are what’s up right now so you can kill whatever you’re thinking about the
two of you. I’m his priority right now so you need to fall off.” Tori reached
in her pocket and pulled out a thin white and pink piece of plastic, stepped
inside our dorm and slapped it down on the counter. I looked down at it and
then back at Tori who had a satisfied look on her face.

“You can keep that. I don’t need it
anymore.” She said and then turned and walked out.

Did this trick just put a freaking used pregnancy test on my counter?
I was speechless. I stared at the
pregnancy test as if looking at it would make it any less real.

“Was that Tori I just saw?” Toni
asked as she pushed past me fumbling with her keys. She unlocked her bedroom
door, disappeared into her room and a few minutes later I heard the toilet
flush and water running.

I sat down on the arm of the sofa.
“Sure was.” I yelled “And guess what?”

“What?” Toni said now standing beside
me.

I pointed to the counter where Tori
had left her pregnancy test.

“Oh hell no, that better not be what
I think it is.” Toni said.

“Sure is.”

“Please tell me that trick didn’t put
a pissy stick on our counter.” Toni said before she walked over to it and
peered at it trying to read the results. After which she stuck her head out the
door I assumed trying to see if Tori was still in sight.

“It’s positive. I already checked.” I
said.

“Are you effin kidding me?” Toni said
and then went on a rant with everything running together. “That trick is
pregnant? You have gotta be effin kidding me! Have you talked to Zay? I can’t
freaking believe he was dumb enough to get that trick pregnant. I can’t believe
that trick put her effin urine on my counter. How tacky is that? You didn’t
touch that pissy thing did you?”

I laughed but only because Toni sounded
so furious and insane. “You need to calm down and heck no I didn’t touch it.”

“Ky, how are you not pissed beyond
pisstivity right now?’ Toni asked with a confused look on her face.

“Oh I’m pissed, trust me but I swear
it’s like I saw it coming so why should I be surprised. Things were too good with
us and every time we get to a good place he manages to mess it up.”

“So what are you gonna do?” Toni
asked. She looked at the microwave on the counter to check the time.

They don’t have practice until 6:00
is he in class?”

“Nope, he’s working at the Rec center
but I’m not going over there.”

“Why not?” Toni asked.

“Not worth it.”

“Oh it’s worth it.”

“It’s really not, is me going over
there going to change the fact that she’s pregnant?”

“No but he at least owes you an
explanation Ky, he’s been all up in your face begging for a new start and she’s
pregnant, that’s just messed up.”

“That’s just Xavier but it’s my fault
for believing he could be anything other than what he is. I’m done. No since in
stressing over it. I’m just done.”

“Okay forget him, I just want to hit
that trick up for putting her nasty behind urine on my counter.”

“You’re dumb.” I said and then
laughed. “Just let it go, it’s not worth the trouble.”

Toni softened her tone and then
looked at me “Are you okay?”

“I guess I have to be don’t I?”

“No you don’t. You have the right to
not
be okay. This situation is beyond
messed up.”

“I’m good Tee.”

“You sure?” Toni asked knowing that I
was lying but she didn’t want to press the issue, she knew me well enough to
know that it wouldn’t do any good.

“It is what it is.” I said “I need to
study for my Psych exam.” I said and picked up my psychology book and book bag
off the sofa and then walked into my room. I shut the door and dropped them
both on the floor before I stepped on my step stool and climbed onto my bed. I
grabbed my body pillow, buried my face into it and closed my eyes because I
could feel the tears forming and I didn’t want to let them go. My mind was
moving in slow motion and I began to feel like I couldn’t breathe so I did the
only thing that I could to make it all go away. I went to sleep.
