Laura's Wolf (Werewolf Marines) (48 page)

They may feel depressed or damaged or guilty or ashamed, have stomach upsets or other physical symptoms, become preoccupied with staying safe and frightened of being traumatized again, feel emotionally numb, have difficulty trusting or connecting emotionally with others, have panic attacks or outbursts of anger, consider suicide, sleep with a weapon within reach, or abuse drugs or alcohol.

If any of this applies to you, please seek help. You don’t have to have all or even most of those symptoms to have PTSD.

PTSD is painful and frightening, but it is also extremely treatable. There are many different treatments that are very effective, but not all therapists know how to treat it. If you think you might have PTSD, I recommend that you consult a therapist who specializes in it.

Though for the purposes of the story, Roy and Laura and their wolf pack find healing by means other than therapy, the sense of hard-earned hope and happiness and emotional connection they have by the end is completely based on my real experiences with many trauma survivors—including myself.

Healing can be difficult and painful, and it takes time. But it’s worth sticking with it. You may have heard that once you get PTSD, you will have it for the rest of your life. In fact, some people do recover completely. Others find that most of their symptoms go away but a few persist, though usually at a far less intense level. Still yet others have some symptoms return in periods of extreme life stress, then go away when their stress levels return to normal.

PTSD is not the end of the world. Many people have gone from feeling that their life has been ruined to regaining their happiness, connections to others, and sense of security. I did. You can too.

For a clear, helpful, easy-reading book on the topic, I recommend
I Can’t Get Over It: A Handbook for Trauma Survivors
, by Aphrodite Matsakis. If you’ve been raped or sexually assaulted, or know someone who has,
RAINN
has a good list of resources. If you’re a veteran or are close to one, the
Wounded Warrior Project
has many resources, and
Give an Hour
offers free therapy.
