It is important to buy good quality essential oils if they are to be effective therapeutically. Synthetic perfume oils or dilute products do not have the same potency and cannot be substituted for 100 per cent pure and natural aromatic oils. There are now many brands of essential oils available but the quality control and ethical standard can vary.

Acknowledgements

As I write, the lavender in my garden is just coming into full bloom. It is one of my favourite herbs: sturdy yet delicate, with a mass of hazy-purple flowers which suffuse the air with their dreamy-soft fragrance. I am also very fond of the essential oil of lavender, and use it more than any other oil about the house. It is ideal as a remedy for children, for the treatment of all sorts of minor ailments, and as a bath oil or room fragrance. This book is dedicated to my young daughter Natasha, who has a keen interest in all perfumes and loves the scent of lavender.

About the Author

Having been brought up in a family with a strong herbal tradition,
JULIA LAWLESS
has had an interest in aromatic plants ever since she was a child. Her Finnish mother, a biochemist, was involved in the research of aromatic oils and subsequently established her own essential oil company, Aqua Oleum. In 1983 Julia took over responsibility for the formulation of natural aromatic products for the family business. Julia has also studied Western and Tibetan herbal medicine and is a qualified aromatherapist, as well as being a passionate gardener.

Highly respected in her field, Julia has lectured internationally on aromatic plants and oils, appearing both on radio and television. She is the author of several books on aromatic plants and their uses, including the best-selling manuals
