Legally Tied (15 page)

Barely able to find her words,
Lyndsay said, “Like it? Oh my God, it’s exquisite and I love it! It’s the most beautiful thing I have ever set my eyes on.” Turning around in his embrace, Lyndsay put her arms around his neck and kissed him with every ounce of love she had. No man had ever done something so thoughtful and generous for her and she would cherish and wear this beautiful necklace any opportunity that she could. Thanking him once again from the bottom of her heart, she held his hand and they both went back to the living room and cuddled up once again on the couch. Lyndsay knew she would have to take the necklace off eventually, but she was going to keep it on as long as she could tonight.

After a few minutes of lying in his arms
, Lyndsay suddenly remembered that it was time for her to give Nick her wedding gift and she suddenly got butterflies in her stomach. Over the past six weeks, things had changed dramatically in Lyndsay’s personal life which she had kept secret from Nick. Only Jodi knew what was going on and they had become thick as thieves regarding the unveiling of it to Nick. As excited as Lyndsay was, she was suddenly momentarily nervous. Taking a deep breath, she looked into his eyes and with a tentative, but big smile said, “I guess it’s time for me to give you my gift.”

In hi
s delight about how much she loved the necklace, Nick said playfully, “Then I guess we better get into the bedroom because your body is the only gift I need.”

Hearing Nick’s obvious desire to get her under the sheets, she couldn’t help but laugh and the jitte
rs she was feeling a minute ago instantly evaporated. Reaching out for his hand, Lyndsay grew serious and while placing his hand on her stomach, she said quietly, “Your gift is inside here.” Watching Nick’s expression closely, she could tell a thousand thoughts were running through his head. Giving him time to let it sink in, Lyndsay remained quiet while continuing to hold his hand on her stomach.

After a few moments of Nick just staring at her, he asked tentatively, “
Lyndsay, are you pregnant?”

Giving him a huge grin, she
shook her head in affirmation and said excitedly, “Yes. We’re going to have a baby!” Nick could barely catch his breath. He was so confused and shocked that he just sputtered and Lyndsay couldn’t help but chuckle. Rubbing his hand reassuringly, she proceeded to tell him the story, knowing he had a million questions. As she began to unfold the details, Nick sat frozen in place as he listened.

Around the beginning of last month, I was sitting in my office working on a design for a new client, and I started to feel queasy. After a few minutes it passed, but it was bad enough that my body broke out into a sweat and I had to stop what I was doing. The next day, the same thing happened again and I threw up. When Maryann, one of my college staff members came into my office and saw me, she said that something was going around the college campus and that maybe I had picked up whatever it was. The next day I met with my doctor, shared my symptoms with her, and explained that something was going around the college. After giving me a thorough exam and taking a urine sample, she said she would let me know if it was something other than the flu. The next couple of days I felt fine and I forgot all about the doctor visit. One afternoon right before I was going to go out to get a sandwich, my doctor called. I think you can guess what she said.”

Pausing for a moment, Nick
had the look of a deer staring into headlights. Knowing that he was remembering their discord over a year ago about her not wanting kids, she continued. “Nick, I know you’re shocked because I told you I never wanted kids. And I really didn’t. But something weird came over me when I found out I was pregnant. Instead of being mortified and angry, I cried with joy. I am so in love with you that knowing there’s a part of you inside me turned every notion I ever had about having kids completely upside down. It really shocked me. Within moments of hearing the news, I wanted to tell the whole world!”

Nick was speechless. For a minute he thought he was dreaming. He had long ago put out of his head any thoughts of starting a family with
Lyndsay. He had convinced himself that it was more important having her in his life than having kids without her. Once he made that decision, he never looked back. Yet here he was on his wedding night with the woman he loved telling him she was pregnant with his child and that she was thrilled about it. Nick’s head was completely spinning and he still hadn’t uttered a word.
Could this really be happening? Was he really going to have a baby?

As
Lyndsay watched Nick trying to comprehend this huge news, she continued. “After I found out and realized how happy I was and how thrilled you would be, I called Jodi. Well, you know her. She insisted on leaving work immediately and came down to Bristol to talk. You can bet she was here inside of 30 minutes talking a mile a minute and pummeling me with questions.”

For the first time during the conversation, a smile spread across Nick’s face as he pictured Jodi flying into
Lyndsay’s store like a bull in a china shop. “Anyway,” Lyndsay said, “After filling her in with everything I just told you, it was her idea to wait until the wedding to tell you. She said that the news would be an incredible wedding gift for you. Seeing how excited she was about that idea, she got me excited, too.” Still not being able to read his face, Lyndsay became suddenly scared. “I hope you’re not mad at me, are you?”

Seeing
Lyndsay’s worried expression instantly snapped Nick out of his emotionally overloaded coma. Pulling her into his arms, he held her like a man clinging to a life raft. Just by the way he was holding onto her, Lyndsay knew that angry was the very last thing he was feeling. She understood completely that he was so overwhelmed with happiness that he was momentarily rendered speechless.

Finally getting his wits back about him, Nick whispered, “
You’ve made me the happiest man on Earth, Lin. Just when I thought I couldn’t be any more in love with you, you have given me this amazing and precious gift…our child.” As they talked quietly for a while about the baby and their future together, Nick couldn’t contain his excitement and he could see that Lyndsay was every bit as excited as he was. It melted his heart knowing how much she was giving to him and he knew in that moment that he would do everything in his power to make sure she never regretted her decision to have a child.

Suddenly remembering it was his wedding night, Nick, like any hot blooded male tucked the news about the baby safely away
for the time being and with a mischievous expression, he looked at his sexy bride with hunger in his eyes. Understanding that look all too well, Lyndsay gave him a “
come get me”
flirtatious wink and shot him a coy look, challenging him to take her to the bedroom. Not wasting any time, Nick stood up, reached for her hand and said in the most impossibly sexy tone, “Seems like my new bride wants to be a wanton hussy. And I have just the remedy for that!” Bending down to pick up the neck tie he had discarded earlier, he gave her a look that belied exactly what he was going to do with it once he got her naked.

As they
walked hand in hand to the bedroom, Lyndsay smiled in the knowledge that being legally tied to Nick wouldn’t be the only way he would keep her tied to him, for years and years to come.
