LS: The Beginning (35 page)

"Aw," chorused Sharon and Catherine.

I looked into Lisa’s lustrous eyes and asked, “Can I have this dance?”

“Certainly,” she replied, grinning.

Then I reached for her hand. Wait, was I insane? The usual Stephen would
have
been too shy to ask her to dance, let alone start the dancing on the dance
floor, but Lisa had come into my life and made me a new being.

The song I asked Derrick to play was titled
Nothing’s
Gonna Change
My
Love
For
You
,
by
George
Benson – a classic. I chose this song because of its lyrics; it related to us, and described a glimpse of my love for her.

We slowly danced through the entire song. I held her close to me as we stared into each other’s eyes, tears caged in hers. I cherished every second of the dance. Honestly, I never
liked dancing, but with Lisa I’d made an exception. She stirred my
very soul.

Derrick continued with other genres of music, which made Lisa and I
increase our dancing pace. The world seemed like a perfect place to live in – that was until the
MC announced, “Sorry, ladies and gentlemen, the recipient for the award of hottest and sexiest male of the year has just arrived. Please, give it up for David
Russell.”

Chapter Nineteen

Two Against One

My entire world crumbled with the mention of his name. Where had
he been all this time, and why did he decide to show his face after
his failed attempt to kill the lady I loved? Or perhaps he thought she was dead. Surely, he must have a good reason for
showing up, and it wasn’t because of the award. One
thing was certain though: he couldn’t attack Lisa in the midst of all the people who were present.

Lisa looked worried as we forced ourselves to remain on the dance floor. I could see the fear in her eyes as she stared at David. “Why is he here?” she asked.

I placed my hand on her waist and turned her around. There was no point in staring into David's eyes. “I have
no clue. I can’t read his mind. Just relax and pretend
everything’s okay.”

She sighed. “I’ll do my best.”

After some minutes, Lisa looked tired of dancing, and I felt the same. We couldn't pretend to be dancing any longer. We left the dance floor returning to our table, which was now empty; Sharon, Catherine
and Stacey were on the dance floor. However, I had no clue of where Julie
was; she’d disappeared immediately after David showed up.

“Did he ever tell you what he wanted from you?” I asked her.

“I've told you before,” she said.

“I guess I've forgotten. Please remind me,” I requested.

“He warned me to stay away from you.”

David had been the one who’d broken up with a beautiful girl like her, not the
other way around. So why would he want her to stay away from me? Was
he still in love with her, or did his attack have something to do with me?

“You said he didn’t use
his hands to push you into the pool?”

“Yes, he didn’t. After he warned me, his eyes turned green and
I found myself lifted up and thrown into the pool,” she explained,
placing her hand over mine.

I was really confused. It was certain he had supernatural powers,
but how was this possible? Lisa knew everything about him and she said
his eyes had never turned green. All this began happening when I arrived in
Sloutenville. W
as I the cause of all this?

“Do you think we should get going?” I asked Lisa, looking at the
dancers ahead. There was no use in staying when Lisa’s well-being was in jeopardy, and neither of us had brought our therapeutic jewels.

Lisa grinned, which I believed to be bogus. “No dear, tonight’s our night. Even Dave can’t ruin it.”

Sharon and Catherine got tired of dancing as well, so they joined us our table. Catherine
noticed the guy who was staring at Lisa.

“Why is that handsome guy staring at you?” she whispered in a foolish
attempt to prevent me from hearing.

“I’m ignoring him, and I suggest you do the same,” Lisa advised.

"Oh, okay," replied Catherine.

Just then Stacey returned from dancing. Finally I could ask her about Julie’s whereabouts, and if she was planning another strategy to distract
me from my love. “Do you have any clue where Julie is right now?” I said.

Her eyebrows rose. “No. I really don’t know. She said she was leaving and I should get
a cab or something.”

It seemed like a lie; therefore I had to confirm the truth by reading her mind, which
wouldn’t have been possible if she welcomed Lisa with open arms. “Okay, if you say so,” I mumbled. She was telling the truth.

Lisa had begun chattering with Catherine and Sharon; probably to take her mind off David. They had no idea why he was staring at her, and she refused to tell them.

“Why do you ask?” Stacey asked, placing her glass of wine on the
table.

I faked a quick smile. “I was only curious about why she left so early.” Keeping
Stacey in the dark seemed to be the best thing to do.

David still hadn’t made any move, which got me really concerned though
apparently not Lisa, who was busy with her girly discussion.

The imagination
within the human mind can go wild. I began deliberating about Lisa and I,
our abilities, our necklaces, and our love. It was no just pure luck that we’d been given
supernatural abilities. Somebody somewhere knew about us.

“Please excuse me. I have to go to the ladies’,” Lisa whispered to me.

This would definitely worsen the situation. Why would she want to go to a place where
she might be alone? Moreover, since our transformation we rarely made use of the toilet due to our lack of eating and drinking. Then again, most ladies go there to freshen up or 'powder their nose' as they called it.

I reached for her arm and whispered to her. “Are you insane?”

“No, I’m not. No worries; I’ll be okay. Besides, Catherine’s going with me. You'll …”

Before she could finish her statement, Catherine stood up. “Yeah,
same here, let’s go.”

“If he’s really after me, then I’ll be ready for him in
there and I’ll call you the second he pops,” Lisa said.

I grimaced. “Please be safe,” I said.

"I will," she said, leaving with Catherine.

My heart began racing the moment she left
with Catherine. I was more worried than anxious of what might happen. Sharon had to perform her best to keep me
together. Meanwhile, Stacey was asked to dance by a random guy, and she gladly accepted.

“You two really look good together,” Sharon said.

I faked a smile. “Yeah, we do,” I answered.

“Which reminds me: a guy walked up to me and introduced himself as your friend. He said his name's …”

“Derrick,” I said.

“Yeah, how did you know?” she asked.

“Other than reading your mind, he's the only male friend I've got.”

“Oh, okay. Well, he asked for my phone number,” she said, smiling. Obviously, she didn’t take my mind-reading statement seriously.

“And did you give it to him?” I asked.

“No. I told him I'll do so the next time we meet,” she muttered.

“Okay, that’s a wise response, considering the odds of that happening.”

Lisa was planning on setting a trap for David – but what if he turned out
smarter than we anticipated? Entering the ladies’ room seemed quite below
his standards, but I couldn’t say much for the new David with green
eyes.

I could hardly focus on any other thing except my diamond wrist watch, how the seconds ticked. Lisa was taking longer than I’d expected. Finally, a voice said, “
He’s here.
” Lisa sounded like she was in control of
the situation, and she only needed me to watch her deal with him.

“Hey, Lisa just sent me a text, and I'm going to meet her in the car. Enjoy the rest of the evening,” I said.

“You're going so soon?” Sharon said.

“Maybe, it depends on Lisa,” I answered.

“All right, bye,” she said.

“Bye.”

Catherine and I bumped into each
other as I shuffled to the ladies’; she had left Lisa alone with dangerous
David. Something in me guessed that Lisa had asked her to leave. I hastened my steps, trying my very best not to switch into a
supersonic run. I hoped they were spending time talking to
each other, throwing fireballs would definitely create a scene and
I'd promised Ben it would never happen.

I was getting close to the door of the ladies’ room when I heard a husky male voice, saying, “I
guess you and your boyfriend thought I wouldn’t enter the ladies’ room,
but I’m sorry to disappoint you. My goal is far greater than being a gentleman. Also, I’m guessing he won’t want to enter the ladies’ after collecting the Mr.
Co –”

I pushed through the door and grabbed him by the
shoulder.

“Guess again, Dave,” I said.

Immediately, I ran out of the court, dragging him to an empty park. He struggled with me, but fortunately I had caught him unaware. We arrived at the park and I released my hand from his shirt and drew back to examine the
vicinity for any unwanted spectators. I felt fighting wasn’t the best way to resolve
the conflict between him and the girl I loved, so I decided to approach him
like a gentleman.

“Tell me, why do you want to kill her?” I said, pointing toward Lisa,
who stood beside me, forming a triangle between us.

He laughed. “Well, if you must know, I believe you’re not meant to be together. So I’m doing you a huge
favor here,” he replied, pacing around me.
