“You really want me to sign this?” Mitch said.

Sammi said, “Yeah.  It’s a legal document, Mitch.  It’s real and binding, just like my love for you.”  The candles illuminated the tears shimmering in her eyes.

Mitch held her gaze for a moment and then signed the contract and handed it to her.  “Now what do you do with it?”

“I give it to my lawyer and he keeps it on file.  It’s legal, but it symbolizes how sorry I am and that I’m making a new promise to you,” Sammi said.

Mitch nodded and looped his arms around her waist.  “You feel so good, Sammi.  I’ve missed you so badly.”

Sammi slid her hands up his arm and said, “I know how you feel.  I missed these strong arms of yours holding me.  And I missed you kissing me.”

Mitch gazed into her eyes and then lowered his head to brush his lips over hers.  Slowly he deepened the kiss and Sammi felt the hot, electric current they’d always shared shoot through her body.  She ran her fingers through the hair on the back of his neck and pressed harder against him.  Mitch’s deep growl of pleasure heightened her excitement and he felt her movements become more urgent.

With difficulty, Mitch broke the kiss and asked, “Can dinner wait?”

“Yeah, it can,” Sammi said.

Mitch picked her up and carried her upstairs to their bedroom.  He set her feet on the floor and said, “I love you, Sammi and you are the perfect woman for me.  I’ve never doubted that.  Don’t ever doubt that again.”

Sammi shook her head and said, “I won’t.  You’re the perfect man for me.  I love you so much and I need you.”

When they made love then, it was an intimate new promise of their love and commitment to each other.  It spoke of new beginnings and forgiveness and all hurt and doubt was washed away with every kiss and word of love.

Epilogue

Owl sat in his tipi drinking the tea Marcus had made for him.  It tasted like crap, but it worked for his pain.  He didn’t like the idea of staying on the laudanum, so he’d switched to the willow bark tea.  It didn’t work as well as the laudanum, but it also didn’t make his mind foggy.  He was trying to roll his left shoulder when there was a scratch on the flap of his tipi.  This was the way to ask entry into a tipi.

He didn’t know who was there so he said, “Come,” in English.

The flap opened and he saw blonde hair and icy blue eyes and broke out in a huge smile.

“If you are here, you fixed things?” he asked.

              “Yes.  I did,” Sammi said.

Sammi walked to him and sat down on his right side so she could gently hug him.  He put his arm around her and leaned his cheek on the top of her head.

“Thank you so much for giving me a good kick in the ass,” she said.

Owl laughed and he was relieved that it didn’t hurt quite as bad when he did.  “You are welcome.  You needed it.”

“Yes, I did.  I was foolish but now I’m wiser, just like you wanted me to be,” she said as she pulled back from him.  “How are you feeling?”

“So-so.  Better.  I can sit longer,” Owl said.

“Good.  I’ve missed you,” Sammi said.

“I miss you, too,” Owl said.

Sammi smiled and said, “Close your eyes and hold out your hand.”

He looked at her suspiciously.  “What trick you play on me?”

“No trick.  Do it,” she insisted.

Owl closed his eyes and opened his palm.  She placed something in it and he made a game of trying to guess what it was without looking at it.  He suggested several silly things that made her laugh.

“Open your eyes and look at it, damn it!” she said.

He did and found that he held a knife in a brand new scabbard.  It was made of fine leather and the design depicted a Great Horned Owl.  Owl traced his fingers over it and then looked at Sammi in surprise.

“Marcus said that the Great Horned Owl is your personal totem, so I had that made for you,” Sammi said.

Owl took the knife out of the scabbard and tested the balance and weight of it.  “This is a very fine knife,” he said.

Sammi said, “It’s from my collection.  Mitch got all of my stuff back except for two knives that they sold.  The guys who took it were part of a theft ring.  It’s a good thing you and I did go after them that night.  They were leaving the next day to go to Helena to sell my stuff.  Billy, the one who stabbed you came clean about it all.”

Owl grunted.  “I like to give him piece of my mind.”

“I’m sure you would.  Owl, I want you to have it as a thank you for keeping me from making the biggest mistake in my life.”

Owl spun the knife around and slid it back into the scabbard.  “Thank you, Sammi.  I am honored to have it.”

“You’re welcome.  I have something else, too,” she said.  She pulled a deck of cards from her jeans pocket.  “I’m gonna teach you how to play poker,” she said.

              “Gambling?” Owl said.

              “Yep.”

“Ok, but you gonna lose, Warrior Woman,” Owl said.

“You don’t even know how to play yet,” Sammi said.

“Don’t matter.  You gonna lose,” Owl said.

She smiled and said, “We’ll see.”

They spent the afternoon playing cards and laughing at each other when they lost.

Sammi arrived home early in the evening to find a note stuck to the newel post.

I left something for you on the dining room table.

              Love,

              Mitch

Sammi hurried to the table and saw a small envelope on the table.  She opened it and a metallic object fell out into her hand.  She turned it over and stared at the deputy’s badge.  There was another note inside the envelope.

Hi Sammi,

I’d like to offer you a position as a deputy of Dawson.  If the answer is yes, come to the office as soon as you get this.

              Sheriff Taylor

Sammi stood dumbfounded and read the note again to make sure she understood it.  Then she tore out the door and down the streets of Dawson until she reached the sheriff’s office.  Mitch sat talking to Jack when she flew in the door and threw herself on Mitch.  She kissed him soundly as Jack looked on and laughed.

When the kiss ended Mitch said, “Does that mean you accept the position?”

“What do you think?” she said and kissed him again.  In a moment she released him and said, “Wait, but what about Jake?  That’ll leave him in the lurch.”

Mitch smiled.  “No, it won’t.  This is a part-time position.  Jack and you will split the time or both of you will work at the same time if there’s something urgent going on.  That way, you can still work for Jake.”

“Really?” she said and plopped down on his lap.

“Yes, really.  You really shouldn’t sit on the sheriff’s lap at work, you know,” he teased her.

“I’m not on duty at the moment and I’m sure Jack doesn’t care.  Do you, Jack?” Sammi said.

“Care about what?  I don’t know what you’re talkin’ about?” Jack said.  “I’m hungry.  I think I’m gonna go get some pie.  Yeah, pie sounds good.  I’ll bring some back for you,” Jack said and left the office.

Mitch and Sammi laughed and then Mitch captured her mouth in a passionate kiss.

              The office door opened again.

“Hey, Mitch, I’ve been thinkin’—Oh good Lord!” Joe said.  “Will ya’ll put up a sign or something?  Never mind!  I’ll talk to ya’ll tomorrow.”

Sammi and Mitch laughed loudly as a disgruntled Mayor Dwyer left the office.  Then Mitch said, “I think we should go home, Deputy Taylor.  The sheriff needs to fill you in on arrest procedures.”

Sammi got off his lap and said, “Really.  Is this going to involve handcuffs?”

“Do you want it to?” Mitch said.

“Maybe, but you’re gonna have to catch me first,” she said and ran out the door.

Mitch made sure he had a pair of cuffs on him, scribbled a note for Jack, and then flew out the door after his new deputy.
