Marcus: The M Series, Book Three (42 page)

The scowl returns and he looks... wounded?

“You don’t remember anything about last night?”

“No. Well, some things. Bits and pieces; flashes but nothing makes sense.”

Except that I obviously had sex with some random guy and he left me sore as hell in a hotel room.

“What’s the last thing you remember?” he asks quietly again, leaning forward in his seat and pinching the bridge of his nose. Oh, shit. He can suspend me for this behavior. Possibly fire.

“Just Brad, his blonde and me ordering a vodka neat. Several times.”

Adam looks at me with a deeper scowl and I sigh when I realize he’s returning to his normal self. I turn away and walk over to where Gia left my purple Louboutin pumps.

“You can’t remember where you were last night?”

I slowly put my shoes on. “I... um... woke up in a room at the Allenton, alone, but I wasn’t all night,” I whisper.

“Madison, I have to tell you –” Adam starts.

I hold up my hand to stop him. I can feel the ‘you’re fired’ speech creeping up and tears welling. My throat burns as I try to stall my cry. If I beg right and convince him not to fire me, I have to remember I cannot go on air after a meltdown. I inhale deeply as I move to stand behind my desk and give him the most ‘please pity me’ look I can muster.

“Adam, please don’t fire me. This has never happened before. I swear I don’t make a habit of getting drunk and waking up in hotel rooms. I will think the night through and make sure I never do, uh, whatever it is I did last night, again. It’ll come to me. Please believe me when I say I am so sorry.”

He gives me a long look, then frustration crosses his face. Damn. Gia is right; he is a major cutie. Deep brown eyes, short, black, curly hair and honey colored skin... not to mention his body... I bet it’s chiseled underneath that polo shirt and fitted jeans.

Suddenly another memory of last night hits me and I freeze.

“As much as I want to, I can’t touch you, Madison. You’ve had too much to drink; you are not thinking clearly,” Loverboy whispered as I kissed his throat and caressed his chest.

“Yes, I am. I’ve always found you attractive,” I whispered back. “Let’s get a room. I can make you want me.”

“I’ve always wanted you, since I met you...”

I grab the back of my desk chair as I feel a familiar tightening in my sex.
I
was the aggressor.
I
approached
him
for sex and, because of my drunken state,
he
tried to refuse
me
. Damn... knowing that turns me on even more. Even in memory, Loverboy excites me sexually.

“Oh, my God! Who the hell
was
that?” I murmur, frowning and thinking hard. I should snap out of this and try to keep my job. I look up at Adam and frown. He’s looking at me with a hopeful expression on his face.

“Another memory,” he asks quietly, tapping his forehead.

“Yes, but—” I stop, thinking I’ve said enough about my errant night to my boss.

Adam looks at me and the scowl returns. “I’m not going to fire you, Madison. I just hope it doesn’t happen again, because if it does, I probably will. Your contract forbids this kind of behavior. Remember the morals clause?”

“Yes, Adam, I do. I promise it won’t happen again,” I breathe in relief, picking up my script. “I need to get to makeup. I have twelve minutes to chair.”

He frowns at me a moment, then shaking his head, he quietly says, “Fine. Go.”

I walk in a rush and as I pass him, I pat him on the shoulder and turn to walk backwards.

“Thanks, Adam. You won’t regret it!”

“I hope you won’t either,” he mutters.

Having no clue what he meant by that, I frown as I take off. I have got to get to Kristen. Fast!
