“It’s kind of hard to imagine that red-headed vixen as a mother.”

“I can picture her very clearly. Lavinia will be a good mother, and Jim a doting father. They’ll never be able to thank you enough for turning over the Little L to them. Lavinia said to tell you that again.”

“No thanks necessary. The ranch was Arthur’s. Lavinia should have inherited it all along.”

Gincie came into the room then, a frown of disdain marring her forehead. “Mr. Tony, you ain’t supposed to be in here when Miss Laurel’s feedin’ the baby. It ain’t proper.”

“Proper? If I’d been proper, this baby you coddle and coo at all day wouldn’t be here.”

Gincie blushed.

When finally Jean Antoine was fast asleep and stopped suckling, Laurel stood up and tenderly placed him in his crib, leaving him in Gincie’s care. As they started out the room, she tugged at the bodice of her gown, but Tony’s hand reached out and stopped her.

“Why bother?” he asked.

Laurel was shocked. “Tony Duvalier, we have a houseful of company. How can we dare—”

His lips broke off her words. Laurel found herself clinging to him, aching for his hands upon her body. It had been so long.

He whispered into her ear. “How can we not?”

With a naughty smile hovering around her lips, Laurel cast a sidelong glance at Gincie and nodded to Tony.

A minute later when Gincie left the nursery, she saw the door to the master bedroom close softly behind a yellow-and-green silk skirt.

Gincie didn’t suppress the pleased grin that twitched about her mouth. “I always said that Mr. Tony was the man for Miss Laurel.”

Down the hall in the huge four-poster bed where she lay wrapped in Tony’s embrace, Laurel quite agreed.
