“Why would I fire you?” Drake says. “You’re one of the best workers I’ve ever had. They’re hard to come by. It just means we need to work a double tomorrow.”

“What do you say we celebrate?” Lily says. “In town. I’m sick of the food at Scooners.”

“Lead the way,” Penny says. But Penny and Drake walk ahead of us across the dock and to the parking lot where Drake has his landscaping truck.

“Thank you,” I say, giving Lily a kiss on her cheek.

“You already said that.” “Did I tell you that you’re my hero?”

She giggles. “No.”

“You are. I think I’m in love with you.”

“Think?”

I smile. “I know I’m in love with you, Lily Carlson.”

“I can’t imagine why.”

“You see me. And when you do, I see me through your eyes. And I’m okay.”

“Yeah? I like that.”

The ferry horn blew behind them. People were leaving the island. But I’m staying. It’s not home, but it feels like it when I’m with Lily.
