“It’s over,” he stuttered, staring down at the hand she held so gently in hers. “How is your houseguest?”

“Morris is going to be leaving today,” she replied, stroking his fingers tenderly. “He doesn’t know it, but he’s going to be taking the train back to Chester. Frankly I’m sick to death of him. Gerald, would you be so kind as to have dinner with me tonight?”

“I should love to, Ruth,” he said fervently. “Is it a dinner party, or will it be just the two of us?”

“Just the two of us,” she whispered. “I’ve got to go now. I’ll see you this evening at seven.”

Witherspoon watched her disappear through her back door. He turned and hurried into his own house.

“Good morning, sir,” Mrs. Goodge called as he flew past her, heading for the backstairs. “Breakfast will be ready in a few minutes. There’s bacon and eggs, porridge, toast and kippers. Will that be enough, sir?”

“Oh, don’t bother with breakfast, Mrs. Goodge,” he hollered over his shoulder. “I’m going to skip it today. I believe I’ve gained a bit of weight.”
