Chapter Five: Face to Face

The next few days were rough for Lola. She felt out of her mind, more than ever now. Not only was she in love with an ex-stripper, but said ex-stripper was her own stepbrother. Sure, the two liked each other back in high school. However, it still felt completely wrong to Lola. She laid low for a while after hearing the news about the dancer. She didn’t talk to many people, unless they were Nicki or someone at her work. Even then, she was very short with her speech. She had so many questions for her stepbrother, but she was so afraid to ask them. He obviously knew who he was doing these actions with, why did he continue to? Lola’s brain was constantly racking. She wasn’t going to calm down without getting the answers she needed.

The next day, Lola was making her way to Sam’s house. She didn’t know if he was home, or if he’d let her in. Nevertheless, she needed to take her chances. She walked up the stone steps the led to the main door of Sam’s apartment building. The intercom system looked brand new, as though the complex had recently updated it. She found the button that had the label that read, “Traverse”. Lola let out a huge sigh and pressed the button.

“Hello?” Sam’s voice came on the P.A. system. Lola hesitated before responding to him. She felt nervous. “Hi, Sam. It’s Lola. I was just in the neighborhood and wanted to say hi.” She knew Sam didn’t know that she knew, so she had to act like things were normal at first. She climbed the stairs to Sam’s second floor apartment. He was waiting patiently for her at his door. This encounter with him was different from all the rest. She felt closer with him, she felt at home with him. The two sat down and began normal chit chat.

A moment of silence occurred and Lola took this opportunity to switch topics. She looked deep into Sam’s eyes. He sat on the other side of the room smiling, waiting for Lola to say something. Instead she just sat there, looking defeated. “What’s wrong,” Sam questioned her. Lola dropped her head and in a calm voice said, “I know it was you, Sam.” She didn’t dare look at him, she had more to say. “No matter what, I still love you,” she continued. Sam didn’t move for quite some time; however Lola finally got the courage look at his face again.

He didn’t look disgusted or confused, like Lola thought he would. Rather, he looked calm and as though he was pondering on a thought. Suddenly, he stood up and walked over to the couch Lola was sitting on. He stood in front of her with his arms extended in front on him. “Come here,” he said to her. Lola took his hands and was pulled into one of the best kisses she had ever had with him. Maybe it was the fact that she actually knew the person she was kissing now. He caressed her face and kissed her face, lips and neck. “I love you too,” he responded to her, finally.

Lola’s jaw practically dropped to the floor. Before she had any time to respond, he was already taking her pants off. He laid her on the couch she was once sitting on and began stripping all of her clothes off. Finally, he shoved his face between her legs and began passionately kissing and licking every inch of her. Lola moaned and moved in enjoyment. He pleasured her to the point of exhaustion, but he didn’t stop. He mounted Lola and once again, thrust faster and faster as the seconds passed. Lola was surprised that the couch didn’t break. He grabbed her and flipped her around, so she was facing the opposite way. Lola was screaming at this point, while Sam nailed her from behind. After climaxing a few times, Lola left a warm liquid on her back and knew Sam had cum too. They didn’t talk much after, rather kissed and used their body language to speak. The two didn’t want to talk about what the future held, they just wanted to live in the moment they were experiencing.

The next day Lola received a call from her father, Chuck. “Hey, dad! What’s up,” Lola rejoiced when answering the phone. He didn’t sound as cheery to speak to her as she did, rather he sounded upset and disappointed. Lola didn’t have much time to get in a word, because her father was busy lighting her a new one, due to her relationship with Sam. Apparently, after their encounter at his house, Sam confessed his love for Lola to his mother Penny; who is married to Lola’s father.

She sat on the phone for what felt like hours, getting lectured by her father. “This is no way for step-siblings to be acting,” her father yelled. “Penny and I didn’t get married so you and Sam can fuck like jackrabbits!” Lola had finally had enough and told her father she needed to go. “Great,” Lola mumbled to herself after getting of the phone with her father. What was the future going to hold for her now?

Chapter Six: To Be or Not to Be

Lola kept her distance from Sam for a bit, after the call from her dad. She didn’t want to make the situation worse. However, she didn’t know where she and Sam stood.  Although their parents didn’t approve, the two still had a relationship. At least, that’s what Lola thought. She loved her stepbrother, whether anyone wanted to believe it. Really, she couldn’t believe it herself. Luckily, she had her best friend to help her from going crazy. Nicki was always there to pick Lola up when she needed it, as Lola did for her. The two were meant for each other and nothing was going to come between the two. She would come over and each dinner with Lola, watch a movie or even spend the day and night there. It helped keep Lola’s mind and anxiety off of the entire situation. Not to mention, her overwhelming urge to talk to Sam. She wanted to kiss and do everything they did before. She missed it and hm. Luckily, Nicki was always to the rescue. While Lola was at work, Nicki would text her to keep her focused. Nicki loved making Lola happy and she did a good job of doing so. In actuality, she hated seeing Lola feeling so complex about the situation. Even if she did have her own life, job and obligations, Nicki was sure to make Lola one of her main priorities.

A week or so after the verbally painful phone call from her dad, Lola starting getting texts and voicemails from Sam. He explained how sorry he was for how things had happened, and that they really needed to talk about things. Lola, though, was petrified to talk to him now. She couldn’t bear to think what he wanted to talk about, so she avoided the conversation completely. Every day, Lola’s phone would metaphorically explode from the amount of texts and calls she got from Sam. None of them were answered, however. Lola couldn’t bring herself to do it.

One night, Nicki came over to spend the night with Lola. “How is everything,” Nicki asked as she walked through the door. Lola didn’t say much, rather she shrugged her shoulder and mumbled something Nicki couldn’t hear. Nicki knew something was up, but knew Lola would end up telling her some time. The two sat down, ate dinner and watched Netflix for the rest of the night. Lola laid on the couch, sucked into the show that was displayed on the screen. Nicki, on the other hand, was curious as to what was going on her Lola.

Suddenly, Lola sat up and turned towards Nicki. “He keeps trying to talk to me,” she confessed to Nicki. “I don’t know what to do,” she continued. Nicki sat down next to Lola and wrapped her arms around her. They sat there, in silence, for a few moments. They took long, deep breaths to try to clear their minds. Nicki pulled herself away from Lola and touched her hand to her face. Nicki explained her feelings regarding Lola’s situation. “You need to sort it out, one way or another. But, if you need time, that’s totally fine,” she reassured Lola. “Now, dinner?” She suggested.

The two made their way to one of their favorite restaurants, while singing their favorite songs in the car. Lola was finally having a good time in a while. She was dancing, singing and even yelling out quotes from
The Notebook
to people on the street. All in all, it was looking like it was going to be a good night. The restaurant they chose was packed, but the girls didn’t mind waiting. They sat waiting and people watching. Eventually, the two started coming up with stories for each person they saw. They watched a couple, which included a tall, frumpy and a small, pretty woman. “She’s just here for the free wine and food,” Lola giggled as Nicki slapped her. “Don’t be mean,” Nicki giggled back.

Lola’s giggling went from loud and obnoxious to non-existent within seconds. As Nicki turned to see why she had stopped, she was distracted by the sight of Sam. He, of course, was the reasoning of Lola’s silence. She sat there, trying to figure out a way to escape without him seeing. “Let’s just go somewhere else to eat,” Nicki said as she grabbed Lola’s arm to stand up. Lola quickly retaliated. “He can’t see me, he’ll come talk to me. We have to be fast,” Lola explained. Nicki nodded and grabbed Lola’s arm. “Follow me,” Nicki said. Quickly the girls made their way out of the restaurant. They hid behind booths, signs and even waiters. As they fled, Lola turned to see where he was. She turned to see Sam staring at the two as they left. “He saw us,” Lola announced.

The next day, Lola awoke to Nicki’s voice. “Breakfast!” Lola smiled and slowly walked to the kitchen. The two enjoyed their breakfast, while watching
The View.
“Oh shut up, Whoopie. Those shoes are for the gym, not television,” Nicki blurted to the television. As Lola began to laugh, they heard a knock on the door. “I’ll get it,” Nicki said as she sprang up from the couch. The door flung open and Nicki let out a big gasp. Lola came running to the door to see Sam standing outside. Nicki walked away, wanting to leave Lola to tend to him. The two walked onto the porch and sat on the two white chairs, which Lola had put out there. Sam took Lola’s hand and squeezed them tightly. “I’m so sorry,” he said to Lola. He went on to explain his regret for telling his mom. “I felt desperate to tell someone. I just chose the wrong person,” he continued. Lola began to feel better about the whole thing. Was he going to want to be with her? Lola was getting her hopes up, hopefully to be happy in the end.

Sam let out a sigh and let go of her hands. “But- I can’t do this,” he confessed to her. Lola’s hopes came crashing down in a matter of seconds. “I love you, Lola. I just have to end this. I hope you can understand that,” he concluded. Lola nodded in agreement, although her eyes were filled with tears. She understood why he did what he did. How would their future have developed? The fact that they were practically siblings tore them apart, but maybe it was for the best.

Chapter Seven: Writing, Love and Facebook

Lola continued on with her life. She wrote at her job, which she hated.  Writing had always been something for Lola to fall back on. If she wanted to get angry out, she wrote. If she had a creative idea, she wrote. It was really always there for her to go to, just like Nicki. However, Lola was stuck within her writing career. She was at a job she absolutely hated, and she felt as though this was where she’d be forever. One day at work, she was confiding in a coworker at wanting to expand her writing. “I want the world to see my writing, not just certain people,” she confessed to her coworker. The woman nodded in agreement and added, “There are several publishing companies in the city. With your quality of writing, you’re bound to get something.” Lola took the woman’s words into consideration. It wouldn’t hurt to try. She saved money throughout the years that would help the publication process too.

After Sam broke things off with her, she really started thinking about where she wanted her life to go. Before all she wanted to see was Sam in her future, now she needed to focus on something else. She whipped up a sample story and decided to send it to one of the publishing companies in the city. She e-mailed several companies, just hoping a company would get back with her. It was her dream to become a successful author.

One night, while out with Nicki and the other girls, Lola bumped shoulders with a man named Todd Griggs. “I’m sorry,” Lola blurted to him as they clashed. The laugh exchanged a couple words that turned into having deep conversations about their lives. The small, quiet bar they were at helped with him getting to know each other better. He was a publisher, which started a business a few years ago. “The first year or so were difficult, but we seem to be in full swing now,” Todd rejoiced. Lola’s stomach twisted with nerves. What were the odds of her meeting a publisher that night? She felt as though fate brought the two there that night.

Lola went on to tell Todd about wanting to get published. “I sent my work to some companies, but I haven’t heard anything,” Lola explained. Todd practically jumped up and down, when hearing this news. He was quick to ask her to dinner after that. “We could get dinner and read your story over. How does that sound?” Lola nodded in acceptance and the two exchanged numbers. Lola couldn’t help but think this was more than a business dinner.

That next night, Todd showed up to Lola’s house to pick her up. He was dressed in a black and white suit and held a large bouquet of roses. Lola opened the door dressed in a long, red dress that made her boobs look great. Her face lit up when she saw Todd and the flowers. “Oh my goodness,” she rejoiced to Todd. She hugged him and put the large, red bouquet in a glass vase. They chatted before heading out the door to the car. “We have reservations at one of the best restaurants in town,” Todd revealed to Lola as they walked out of the door. Lola smiled and finally felt great after what happened with Sam.

As they ate dinner, Todd read through her story and commented on it while doing so. “This is great,” Todd said. “You’re a great writer,” he continued. Lola blushed and explained her love for writing. “Creating stories has always been so fun for me,” she responded. Todd sets the sample writing aside and stares into Lola’s eyes. “I want to make you successful. Let me be the person to do that,” he offered to Nicki. Lola was speechless. Was this reality? She quickly agreed and the two began seeing each other more frequently.

Soon enough, Todd started the process of publishing Lola’s short story. Lola’s dream was coming true and better yet, something was developing between her and Todd. He liked her and she could tell. Every time they were together, he always placed himself close to her, he brought her flowers more than once and he even kissed her goodbye on the cheek. Things were getting more and more serious with him and Lola was, for once, happy with the way things were going.

One night, he invited her to his home for dinner. He prepared a lovely dinner, including breaded chicken, asparagus and mashed potatoes. There were red candles lit on the table and classy music played on low. He spoke of her writing and how he wanted to read it all day. “You’re so amazing,” Todd said as he leaned himself closer to Lola. The two sat, saying what they liked about each other. He told her how beautiful and creative she was, while she told him how sensitive and giving he was. Suddenly, Todd leaned it and kissed Lola. She knew he wasn’t some ordinary guy.

After making it official with Todd on her social media accounts, Lola received a Facebook message from Sam. He explained how happy he was that she was doing what was best for her. The love he had for her hadn’t lessened, it was merely blurred to him. “I couldn’t be happier for you. All my love,” he concluded in message. This message didn’t bring any feelings back that she had for him, rather it helped with the final closure she needed. Finally, Lola could focus on another man besides one hiding behind a mask.
