"You need a refill?" Dave asked as he headed to the kitchen.

"Sure."

His mind beginning to float again, Robbie woke up as Dave brought the bottle with him to pour. Thanking him, he then waited until he was seated and comfortable, sipping his brew.

"The body was in the trunk."

"Yeah. Sarge told me. How's your shoulder."

"Sore. I'm so fucking angry he got me I could scream."

"Ditto. I thought I would have a heart attack when I heard you come out over the air that you were shot. I swear, Rob, I died inside."

"I'm okay. It's really just a deep groove. At least the bullet came out again and wasn't stuck in me. It was dug out of his driver's side door."

Dave set his beer down and reached out for him.

Setting his glass down as well, Robbie gladly embraced him, not wanting to admit how afraid he'd been. Feeling Dave squeeze him hard, as if he too were afraid, Robbie kissed his neck and then backed up to see his chocolate brown eyes.

"I'm okay."

Biting his lip as if he were trying to restrain his anxiety over it, Dave sighed deeply. "I almost don't want you out there anymore."

"I have to be. I'm the only one who can ID him."

"But, he's got it in for you. And you guys never wear a fucking vest!"

"Maybe I should!" Robbie joked, but he wasn't too sure it was a bad idea. "We're usually investigating the scenes after the crime is done. I've never worn one."

"Get one. Just for now."

"Maybe. All right. Are you hungry or anything?"

"Yes..." Dave purred, "But not for food." Then as if he just remembered he added, "But, only if you're up for it."

"I am. Believe me. I am."

Very gently Dave wrapped around him again and went for his lips. Robbie moaned at the fire and crushed him against his chest. "Make love to me, Officer Harris."

"My pleasure, Agent Taylor."

Robbie stood up and reached out his hand. Dave followed him to his bedroom. Offering to help, Dave unbuttoned Robbie's shirt and took it off, avoiding the bandage which had already seeped blood through the gauze and needed changing.

Trying not to let it distract them, Robbie kept moving Dave's attention away from it so he didn't worry while they were making love. "This doesn't hurt." Robbie smoothed his hand over his hard-on.

"Good. I'll start there then," Dave laughed in reply. He lowered to his knees and took him into his mouth.

At the penetration of his cock into Dave's hot mouth, Robbie felt all his worry dissolve away. "That's it, lover ...

suck it for me."

Dave gripped Robbie's ass cheeks again as he'd done previously, as if he loved the feel of them in his hands.

Thrusting his hips into that luxurious mouth, Robbie soon was on the edge. The minute Dave pushed his index finger inside his anus, Robbie came arching his back and holding onto Dave's shoulders for dear life. Slowing down his sucking, Dave paused and looked up at him.

Catching his breath, Robbie opened his eyes and peered down at that sexy smile. "Fantastic. Thank you."

"Can I fuck you? You up for it?"

"Yes. Very up for it." Robbie loved the care Dave was showing, but had come to expect nothing less from him. He climbed onto the bed and propped himself up on a mound of pillows.

Dave quickly found the rubbers and lubrication and prepared himself.

With his eyes closed and a smile on his face, Robbie felt that wonderful sensation of heat entering him. Groaning in pleasure, he lost his cares and the weight of the world with every thrust of his lover's hips. As Dave's cock shivered inside 153

him, he smiled contentedly and whispered, "Christ, I love you so much."

After Dave pulled out and discarded the spent rubber, he lie next to him on the bed and held him close. "Ditto. I can't get enough of your tight white ass!"

Robbie burst out laughing. "And I can't get enough of your fabulous black cock!"

"Well, then! We're a perfect combination."

"Perfect." Robbie kissed him then rested his head on Dave's broad chest.

After dozing on and off, Dave raised his head off the pillow to check to see if Robbie was asleep. His eyes were wide and staring at nothing. "You okay?"

Robbie's eyes blinked and he seemed to come into focus on Dave's concerned expression. "Yeah. Just thinking. Uh, Frank seems to have figured out we're lovers. You okay with that?"

"Frank?"

"Agent Skinner."

"Oh." He thought about it for a minute, then asked, "Do you care?"

"No. Not in the least. But I don't generally work with these guys, so I don't mind."

Dave stretched and then placed both his hands behind his head. Did the fact that someone knew he was gay bother him? He thought he knew the answer to that question, but maybe he didn't.

Robbie sat up and stared down at him. "Getting used to the idea?"

"Yeah. Maybe a little. I mean, it's not like the rank and file know. At least I don't think they do." Dave wondered if being associated with someone like Robbie, on any level, could be a bad thing? He was handsome, intelligent, and well respected for the work he did. How damaging could that be?

"Growing braver?" Robbie laughed softly. "Braver by the minute? Or is it just easier to be strong about it when you're in bed with your lover?"

"Who knows? I suppose for years I dreaded even the hint of that label. Maybe I'm growing older and wiser. Or at least I don't give a shit anymore."

"No. It's older and wiser. I don't go around announcing it, but I won't deny it or hide it either. Unless my partner wishes me to. I guess I'm out and comfortable about it."

'Out'. That word echoed in Dave's head. What would the guys in his squad think? Or his sergeant? Would it be all bad?

"Don't worry," Robbie said, as if reading his mind, "Skinner won't say a word to your men."

"No. No, of course he won't." Dave tried to smile at the reassurance. Then he noticed the bandage on Robbie's shoulder again. "We need to change that. It's really completely soaked through the gauze."

"Yes. Okay. I have some supplies in the bathroom."

"Let me help."

"Thanks."

They flicked on the bright bathroom light and squinted their eyes to get used to it from the contrast of the darkness 155

of the other rooms. Dave had Robbie sit on the closed toilet seat, then he opened the medicine cabinet, looking inside.

Taking gauze, tape, and some peroxide out, he set them down on the counter by the sink, then began gingerly peeling back the tape. "Shit. It looks really raw."

"First day, it'll calm down tomorrow."

"Must hurt like a motha-fucka." Dave threw the stained gauze away and then held out the peroxide. "I think this will send you through the ceiling."

"Yeah. Forget that. It stings enough. Just the gauze for now."

Dave noticed Robbie trying to look down at it awkwardly.

Pausing before he covered it up, he asked, "You want to see it in the mirror first?"

"No. It just gets me angry. Forget it."

Carefully taking a square of gauze out of the sterile package, Dave set it on the open wound and it stuck instantly. Biting his lip, upset at having to care for him because a madman was out to kill him, Dave cut the tape and neatly covered over the open, wounded skin. "There. At least that'll take you to morning."

"Thanks, babe." Robbie pressed the tape down more securely, then sighed tiredly.

"Let's get some sleep."

Nodding, Robbie stood up and relieved himself, then they washed up and went to bed.

Cuddling in the dark, Dave kissed the top of Robbie's head and tried to rest. He didn't want him out there again tomorrow, but he knew better than to voice his concerns.

Besides, Robbie most likely already knew them.

Chapter Eight

When they exited the apartment the next morning, the other two agents were already out in the hall waiting. Dave avoided their eyes and just whispered to Robbie that he'd see him later. Robbie nodded and walked down the corridor towards them.

Escaping through the parking garage once more, Dave headed home to change and maybe catch a quick nap before shift.

When he came through his door he had several messages on his machine from his parents. Checking the time, seeing it was nearing nine a.m. he dialed his mother's number as he set his gun pack on the counter in the kitchen. "Mom? It's me. What's with all the phone calls?"

"Where were you? We called you all night long. We even tried your mobile phone and you never answered. We were worried sick."

Sitting down on a chair at the kitchen table, stretching the phone cord as he did, Dave sighed tiredly and decided to go for it, regardless of the consequences. "I spent the night over at friend's place."

"Oh? What friend? Who? Do I know her?"

"Not a her, Mom, a him. He's one of the FBI agents working on this serial murder case."

"Oh? Do you get paid for discussing the case that late? I don't think the department should expect that kind of thing from you. You need your time off."

Rubbing his face tiredly, he replied, "No. No, Mom, it's not like that. I wanted to spend the night with him."

"Why? I don't understand."

Biting his lip, knowing the consequences could be horrific, Dave figured if Robbie could be out and survive, then maybe he could be as well. "Mom, I'm gay."

"What? What did you say, Davy? I'm not sure I heard you."

"I said, I'm gay." Silence followed. "Mom?"

"I better not have heard what I just thought I heard!"

"Calm down."

"Don't you tell me to calm down! Who the hell do you think you are telling me that! Your father will skin you alive! You don't know what you're talking about! You are not gay! Come to your senses! You just haven't met a nice girl! Let me introduce you to one of the girls at church. You never come to church, David, and you've strayed. I don't believe you just told me what you told me! I am furious with you! Furious!"

Letting her rant at him, which he expected, he rubbed his face, his eyes, yawned, and then figured she'd most likely want him to see a shrink next.

"...with some man from the FBI? This is ridiculous! When your father gets home from work, I'm telling him to go see you and knock some sense into you!"

"Forget it, Mom. I'll be on shift till eight and then over at Robbie's after."

"Robbie? Is that this homo's name? Robbie?"

"Don't even start on him, Mother. It's my choice. Let me go. I can't sit here and listen to you go on about it."

"Oh, you will listen! You will listen to what I have to say."

"What? That I'm a sinner? And I'll go to hell?"

"Yes, that's exactly what I was thinking! You need to stop behaving like that."

"Never mind, Mom. I've got to go. I need to do some things before work."

"Don't you think you've heard the last of this!"

"Okay. Whatever. Bye." He hung up and leaned his chin on his hand. "Shit. I knew it."

Before Robbie had even discussed the case with them, Agent Green drove them across town to the evidence section.

Marching him down the hall, one on either side of him, Robbie rolled his eyes tiredly as he was brought forth and ordered to get fitted for a bullet-proof vest for the duration of the assignment. Orders from

himself.

Thinking of Dave's own comments about the situation, Robbie didn't argue. He also didn't want to wait for the Dragon's shot to improve.

He handed his suit jacket to Agent Green and then took off his shoulder holster and set it on the counter near them. The evidence man handed him a blue Kevlar vest to try on. Hating the thing which felt like a turtle shell, Robbie Velcro'd it into place and then fit his holster on top of it and then his jacket over that, which just barely covered it and wouldn't close.

"Fuck," he mumbled, then it grew louder as he snarled, "Fuck, fuck, fuck!"

"Shut up and let's go," Agent Skinner replied, ignoring Robbie's cries of frustration. "We checked on the name Robert

'Bob' T. Stalker. No record found."

"Gee, that's a surprise," Robbie choked in a laugh. "No, Bob The Stalker listed? How amazing!"

As they passed through the halls, Agent Green said, "And we can't find the original owner on that report of sale on the car. No record on that either."

"He's good," Robbie breathed in anger, "He's really good."

"There was plenty of DNA samples in the car, though. But none from any of his victims. And the samples we have were so varied they could match anyone."

"Who did they match?" Robbie asked Agent Skinner.

"No one."

Robbie threw up his hands in defeat.

"You go nowhere alone. And next time I get a coffee, you come inside with me." Agent Skinner held open a door for them to pass through.

"Where the hell were you? I forgot to ask. Didn't you hear me report shots were fired at me?" Robbie spotted their car crammed into an opening and blocking three other patrol cars.

"No. The stupid espresso machine was hissing so loudly I couldn't hear shit."

"Jesus, Frank!" Robbie said as he climbed into the back seat. "You could have been walking head on into an ambush.

Listen to the thing from now on!"

"Shut up. I told you I couldn't hear it. It won't happen again because I'm not losing sight of you this time."

Robbie shifted the vest in discomfort, grabbing it from the bottom and pushing it up and down until it sat right. "I should just ride with Dave."
