Charlie was glad the Lieutenant told some of his war stories. Not only did they keep him entertained, they were also quite informative. Sometimes they were sad and sometimes they were so funny that he would have to park the RMP in a deserted area just to get out and take a piss in fear that he would wet his pants.

On this night Charlie was glad that Lt. A. was occupying his mind, because he was trying very hard not to think of Terry. He had conjured only about a million reasons why she’d had to leave the coffee shop in such a hurry. There was no doubt that he really had to ease up on his emotions.

Lt. A. began to tell Charlie another story but they were both interrupted by a job on Bay Street near Canal Street. Some fool had placed a briefcase with exposed wires in the doorway of the Staten Island Savings Bank and a Good Samaritan saw it and called 911.
The job turned out to be an all-nighter and was boring and tedious. The briefcase was found in a business area that bustled during the day but had no residents living within at least six blocks of the bank in all directions. The only concern was for the transit authority bus routes along Bay Street and the traffic, which was handled quite nicely by a few other RMP’s directing it on a detour pattern. A call had been made to the local transit authority garage that dispatched its own supervisor to handle the detour. The NYPD emergency service unit responded and requested the services of the bomb squad which had to respond from Rodmans’ Neck way up in the Bronx. The bomb crew soon arrived with the containment vehicle as well as a robot with its own X-ray attached.

After roughly seven hours of standing on the sidelines and letting the pros do their jobs, it was finally determined that it was a hoax with no explosives whatsoever.

Three

The lieutenant and Charlie signed out of the precinct at 10:00 A.M. When Charlie arrived home, he expected to walk into an empty house since his wife usually left for work between 8:00 A.M. and 8:30 A.M. He saw Annette’s car in the driveway when he pulled up in front of his house, which should have tipped him off. After entering the house, he headed for the kitchen.

Annette was the sort of housewife who could not tolerate clutter, or what she considered clutter, anywhere on the counters. Charlie vividly remembered how difficult it was for her to concede just to allowing an automatic coffee maker to remain out in the open.

He noticed that the coffee maker was still on but Charlie saw no sign of Annette. He thought perhaps she had left her car home and gotten a ride to work. Without thinking about it any further, he decided to go upstairs and hit the hay. He was bushed.

As he made his way into the bedroom, much to his amazement, he found Annette on the bed wearing a very sexy teddy and nothing else, including panties. She also wore the sexiest makeup he’d seen on her in a long time. She looked sexy as all hell.

Although he was tired, he loved sex in the morning. It seemed he performed better in the morning than at any other time of the day, and although he was never one to say no to a good session of lovemaking, at this moment all he wanted to do was fuck her brains out.

He grabbed Annette roughly and kissed her fully on the mouth. He then lowered himself down to her stomach and began to lick her pubic area. He forced open her inner and outer lips and began to lick and suck roughly on her vagina.

He could hear his wife moan as she grabbed his head and thrust his face deeper into her pussy and Charlie suddenly found himself fantasizing about Terry. He actually visualized Terry and imagined it was her pussy he was eating. He raised himself up and forcibly entered Annette with his swollen member. He wanted to come inside Terry but knew he could not come inside Annette without protection, so he pulled out at the last minute and ejaculated
all over his wife’s breasts. Although Annette didn’t say anything, her eyes told him that this was not the Charlie she knew.

He knew he had used Annette and was obviously disappointed in him. For that matter, he was disappointed in himself. He hadn’t spoken one word to her, not one word, telling his wife how beautiful she looked. He hadn’t said a single word of thanks to her for staying home today, not one, single word. He had been a heel.

He could have pleased and satisfied her; hell, he
should have
pleased and satisfied her. Instead he had only thought of himself and his needs. Even worse, he thought of another woman.

Annette knew something was wrong.

“Charlie, are you okay?”

Before he answered, she continued.

“Look, I’ll be honest with you. I’ve been planning this for a while and then you don’t even call me to let me know that you’re going to be late!”

“Honey, at 8:00 A.M. I was still out on the street. I would have called you had I known you weren’t going to work,” Charlie offered.

“Look, sweetheart, I’ll be honest with you. I was looking forward to a great orgasm,” she blurted out.

Charlie was taken back. In all their years together she had never actually come out and said anything quite like this. He knew Annette was good in bed but coming out and saying it so boldly was bewildering to him. He was also a little bit afraid.

Although he was really tired, he didn’t want to disappoint his wife so he started to kiss her again with the intention of really pleasing her this time. He decided to please her orally and, as his tongue approached her vagina, she began to moan and writhe as if she were a snake on fire. A few minutes later Annette experienced an explosive orgasm the likes of which Charlie had never seen. The wetness and heat from her body aroused him even more now than when he first saw his wife in her teddy.

Charlie was amazed that she was still wet and moist after all these years and it was evident. His wife knew he was aroused again and grabbed his swollen member and drew it into her mouth. She played with him for a while but when she sensed he could no longer hold back, she allowed him to explode into her mouth and swallowed him as she had from the first days when they had begun dating.

Afterwards they both lay in bed together enjoying a cigarette. They engaged in small talk but really did not say anything of importance to one another. After they extinguished their cigarettes, Annette got out of bed and kissed Charlie goodnight. She drew shut the room darkening shades they had purchased together when he began working the late tours then walked out of the room, softly closing the door behind her.

Some people could fall asleep with the morning sun streaming through the windows, but Charlie was not one of them. He needed darkness. It was almost noon and he was exhausted after first being up all night, then the lovemaking session, but he was glad Annette had decided to stay at home and wait for him. He wanted to be honest with her and tell her about the stupid childhood crush he had on some strange girl at work, but he could not bring himself to say it. He swore to himself that nothing would ever happen between Terry and himself then fell asleep quickly and easily.

While he slept, he dreamed of Terry.

Four

Although Charlie and Lt. A. both had Sunday and Monday off, Friday nights were always busy in the 120
th
. They would finish up on Saturday morning at 8:00 A.M. then not have to return until Monday night at midnight. It was a steady 64-hour swing. The advantage of steady days off afforded one the opportunity to plan one’s life.

Charlie decided to go straight into work and bypassed the donut shop. He began to feel stupid because he did not even know this girl and she didn’t know him.

As he drove through the city, his mind once again began to play twenty questions with him. Why had she called? Why did she leave a message at the precinct? Was she attracted to him?

Before he got to work he stopped elsewhere for the coffee he so desperately needed. When he arrived at the station house, he parked his car at the rear of the precinct on Stuyvesant Place.

The precinct was located at 78 Richmond Terrace. The surrounding area was the hub for the entire criminal justice department and parking was a cinch on the late tours. There were no judges, lawyers or Probation Department people to fight over parking spaces with. Directly adjacent to the precinct at 100 Richmond Terrace was the Family Court, and one block south of the precinct were the buildings that housed the Supreme Court, Borough Hall and the District Attorney’s offices. Everybody who was somebody had a reserved spot or parking privileges.

Charlie walked into the precinct and strolled into the muster room as usual. He perused the roll call to see the nightly assignments then glanced at the area below it, where there was a series of wooded slots labeled A through Z. Personal mail as well as departmental mail was diverted into these slots and served as the mail boxes for the uniformed force of the 120
th
precinct.

Charlie looked into his and retrieved two envelopes. One contained a copy of an accident report which he had been expecting. The other contained a written message from the T.S. operator.

Charlie began to read the piece of paper and once again was astonished by the words which appeared before his eyes.

“Terry called. Call her at 390-1275,” the message read.

His heart began to race, just as it had on the previous night, and his stomach was churning in overdrive. He walked over to the clerical man at the 124 desk and retrieved a phone book.

He began looking up the phone number of the Dunkin Donuts shop where Terry worked. As the pounding of his heart beat so loud that he wondered if anyone else could hear it, he seriously questioned what in God’s name he was doing. Hadn’t Annette pleased him the other morning?

He told himself to put the phone book down but he didn’t listen. The phone number of the Dunkin Donuts shop was not the same number as in the message. He wanted to call the number written on the small scrap of paper but he would need complete privacy if he did. He didn’t want the entire precinct breathing down his neck while he was on the phone.

The room opposite the telephone switchboard was the SP 10 operator’s room. The SP 10 operator was a civilian employee who took police reports directly over the phone from complainants, which saved time as well as police manpower. Police presence was not always needed at certain past crimes because most reports of minor thefts and damage were required for insurance purposes only. However, if a complainant actually wanted the police to respond, they did so regardless of the crime.

Every cop who had a girlfriend or mistress used the SP 10 room. Charlie did not want to fall into that category so he quickly went up to his locker room and changed into his uniform. As soon as he opened his locker door he saw Annette’s picture. It was one he had taken at one of their children’s graduations. Again, he felt like a heel.

Feeling Annette staring at him, he changed quickly and closed and locked his locker, spinning the combination tumblers several times before walking away. Without a glance back, he made his way down the rear stairs on his way to the muster room. When he got to the ground floor he passed the rear clerical office and noticed it was empty.

He walked in and sat at one of the desks to make his phone
call, feeling as nervous as he had been when he first called a girl for a date during his teen age years. He stared at the phone on the desk, frozen in doubt. He could not throw the paper away, which was what he wanted to do and knew he should do, yet he could not dial the number, either.

He finally mustered up enough courage and picked up the receiver. He dialed the number and silently prayed that Terry would be the one to answer the phone. A female answered but it was not Terry’s voice.

“Hello?” answered the voice on the other end of the line.

“Hi, my name is Charlie. May I please speak to Terry?

“Hold on one minute,” the voice responded.

It seemed like an eternity before anyone else spoke into the phone.

“Charlie? Is it you?” the sweetest, most heavenly voice answered.

“Yes, it’s me. Terry, are you okay?
”
he asked, but before she could respond, he began to ramble.

“I got your notes, both of them. I spoke to the other waitress and I have been beside myself for two days, worried about you.”

He was frantic but honest. When he finally fell silent, he heard Terry giggle a little on the other end of the line.

“Charlie, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean for you to go crazy,” she insisted.

“Listen, I want to apologize for anything I might say that may offend you, but I want to be up front with you, okay?
”
Charlie said, his voice even and serious.

“I understand,” she said.

“Terry, I don’t know what it is but you have been in mind since I saw you. I think about you all the time and I have found myself missing you,” he blurted out.

“Oh, Charlie, that is so sweet! You have been in my mind, too. That’s why I left those messages with Irene,” she admitted.

“Who’s Irene?
”
he asked.

“Irene is the other girl I work with at the coffee shop. She’s a good friend and is discreet,” she answered.
