Prologue

August 4
th

Amalfi, Italy

PEELING AN EAR from a man’s head creates an
impossible amount of blood.

Abrahan knew this going in— he’d separated
ear and head before in his life. So it wasn’t the viscous,
rust-colored pool at his feet that bothered him, nor was it the
flexible trophy he’d achieved for his efforts. No, what annoyed him
every time he was forced to mete out this punishment were the
recipient’s incessant screams.

Please
, Abrahan!” Vasco shrieked
again.

He scowled down at the man struggling on
bended knee before him. A geyser spouted from the space where that
ear used to be, and Vasco’s fleshy face was distorted in a way that
put Munch’s
Scream
to shame: eyes wide, mouth stretched to
capacity. His arms were strained to breaking in opposite
directions, each pinned in place by an enforcer. The beefy men
holding him made a runt of Vasco’s mammoth size. Both had a knee
jammed into Vasco’s back, shoved firmly in the joint right where
the upper arm and shoulder met. A third man clamped his meaty paws
in a vice grip on Vasco’s now-asymmetrical head.

That silky black hair was oily and wet.

And a touch shorter on the right side from
the free haircut.

Tears spilled from his eyes and sweat coated
his face, dripping down his cheeks and into his fast-moving mouth;
mixed with the rush of blood at the side of his head before falling
in fat drops from his trembling chin.

Please
!”

Ignoring the cries, Abrahan turned his gaze
to his office wall. Beyond the solid glass panels, the
Mediterranean Sea glimmered in the sunlight like a newly polished
opal, a shimmery array of fiery blues and seductive greens. His
eyelids drifted closed and a smile ghosted over his lips as he
imagined the sun’s warmth kissing his skin. He inhaled deeply.
Instead of the meaty, raw odor of spilled blood, the fresh, salty
tang of seawater filled his nostrils and lungs. A steady breeze
whistled past the cliffside and the rhythmic clap of waves
against—

Vasco screamed.

Abrahan’s eyes popped open. He balled his
fist and slammed it against Vasco’s teeth. “Silence!”

Impossible to hear himself think with so
much noise!

Vasco’s screams turned to screeches.

“This is your doing,” Abrahan barked, voice
thundering in the large room. Spinning on the ball of his foot, he
jabbed the loose ear toward the man by the door. “His suffering is
your fault. So tell me again, Zio. Tell me the reason why you have
been out of contact for nearly two weeks?”

“I’ve already tol—”

“Louder! Say it loud enough for Vasco to
hear why
he’s
been punished for
your
mistake.”

Zio’s gaze narrowed just as it did when they
were children. Impotent rage simmered in the brown depths and his
jaw clenched tight. Instead of acting on the impulse, he glanced
away and tipped his silver flask to his lips. “I’ve told you
already. How many times must we—”

“As many times as it takes for me to pick
sense from your nonsense,
maninho
!” Abrahan stalked over the
marble flooring, fingers kneading Vasco’s rubbery appendage. Bloody
blade still in hand, he stabbed at the air near Sanzio’s eye.
“Repeat it until the words you speak are words I want to hear.
Until I understand fully why
everything
I’ve worked for is
at risk. And then, perhaps, you’ll repeat your tale three times
more,
compreende
?”

Leaning away from the knife, Sanzio sucked
his teeth. “As I said, the details are blurry. It was early, so I
killed some time at the disco to—”

“Out enjoying the city when all I required
of you was to keep your feeble mind on business for one evening.”
Abrahan nodded sharply and motioned with the knife. “Continue.”

“I-I… I danced with a woman —many women— but
I left with one, I think.” Grinning at his conquest, Sanzio dragged
his fingers over the scruff on his chin. His nails scraped softly
against the coarse strands and, combined with Vasco’s muffled
wails, the noise threatened to push Abrahan over the edge.

Santa Maria Mãe de Deus,
he was so
very sick of that sound!

Without turning, he ordered, “The
doors!”

Footsteps on the tiles. The low whir of a
motor. Then, a soft creak as the glass partitions gave way.
Gradually, the scent in the air shifted from blood to sea; the loud
cries grew fainter as they succumbed to the symphony of whistling
breeze and pounding waves.

Better.

Much better.

In the future, he’d have to remember to open
the doors first…

On a deep breath, Abrahan set a red fist on
Sanzio’s shoulder, marring the fabric of the dingy white polo
shirt. He waited with a thin smile.

“I don’t remember much else. I was…” All at
once Sanzio’s cheeks flushed like a schoolboy, and a corner of his
mouth pulled up. “I received the call from Vasco later than
expected.”

Ah, yes. Always someone else’s fault.

Abrahan ignored that a moment, digging to
get to the heart of the matter. “Something happened before then,
though. Something you are only now remembering? What was it,
Zio?”

A long pause.

“I was… kissing the woman. Her name… her
name was… it escapes me—”

“As did she.”

Sanzio chuckled. “I was kissing her in my…
ah… car.” His gaze flicked up and then away quickly. “I remember
her hair was dark, cut evenly at the shoulders. Brown skin, dark
eyes. And lips like—” He cleared his throat.

“I called her
Juh… Juh…
” Sanzio
frowned as though thinking it over. Sucked his teeth and shrugged.
“I can’t recall. But we were kissing and touching when I
finally
got the late call from Vasco with the passcode. I’d
intended to make quick work of the woman and pass the message to
you in the allotted time, but the next thing I know it’s the
following day and I wake up in a jail cell. Took Vasco several days
to locate me.”

“Jail… For?”

“Firing my gun at Silvia. I also drugged her
and left her on the floor of my apartment, according to the
report.”

A paper trail Abrahan would have to clean
up… Officers to bribe…

“And Silvia is not the woman you left the
club with?”

“No.”

“Then who is she?”

“More a nuisance than anything.” Sanzio
brightened. “But she gives
exquisite
head. I call her
sometimes when I’m…in the mood for head. I didn’t call her that
night, but somehow Silvia was there though…”

“Did you let her in?” Sanzio shook his head
and Abrahan added, “She has a key to your apartment?”

Sanzio glanced away again, an admission if
ever there was. “No. She lives in the building.”

Again, Abrahan set the lie aside for the
time being.

“Perhaps she is working with this other
woman to—”

“You misunderstand.” The lazy smile Sanzio
had perfected over the years graced his mouth, and his eyes
twinkled. “When I said I call Silvia for head,
mano
, it’s
not her sharp mind and intelligent conversation I’m seeking. The
girl couldn’t connect two dots with a straight line let alone plot
to infiltrate our organization. She doesn’t know about what we do.
Any explanation for this trouble has to do with the woman I took
home… ah… took to my car, rather.”

Truth always found the light.

“Would you know her if you saw her again,
the other woman?”
