In July of 2012, Rose got wind that Votto had missed a team workout and immediately sent him a chastising text. Votto, Rose says, texted right back, apologetic, and explained that he had missed the workout only because he was having surgery on his knee.

N
UMEROUS PEOPLE, from various and disparate walks, helped me in my reporting of this book—in large ways and in small. They should be acknowledged, and thanked, for the time they spent with me, for the details and the insight they provided. To start: Pete Rose Jr., David Rose and Karolyn Rose. As well as Caryl Schnebelt.

In Cincinnati (and thereabouts) there was Bob Crotty and Bob Castellini Jr., Jeff Ruby and Steve Wolter. Also John Erardi, Greg Rhodes, Chris Eckes, Wayne Lyster, Kevin Manley, Mike Shannon, Jim Bowden, Dennis “Wildman” Walker. And out of the West Side in particular: Greg Staab, Jim Luebbert, Charles Parsons, ferryman Paul Anderson, Johnny Flemming (and Miranda), Ray Hassard and Lonnie from Braddock Street.

In Cooperstown (and thereabouts) there was Bill Francis, Jeff Idelson, Tom Heitz, Jim Gates, Joe Cannata, Brad Horn, Ted Hargrove, Andrew Vilacky, Tom Catal, Ken Meifert, Craig Muder, Freddy Berowski and the mayor, Jeff Katz.

There were ballplayers, past and present, who gave their time, and managers too. Among them, alphabetically: Buddy Bell, Johnny Bench, Kurt Bevacqua, Bruce Bochy, Wade Boggs, Greg Briley, Lou Brock, Tom Browning, Jay Bruce, Steve Carlton, Marvin Chalmers, Larry Christenson, Doug Flynn, John Franco, Steve Garvey, Billy Grabarkewitz, Greg Gross, Tommy Harper, Billy Hatcher, Tommy Helms, Keith Hernandez, Dave LaPoint, Stephen Larkin, Jack McKeon, Denny McLain, Paul Molitor, Joe Morgan, Rob Murphy, Dan Neville, Phil Niekro, Steve Nikorak, Claude Osteen, Jim O’Toole, Dave Parker, Eduardo Perez, Brandon Phillips, Lou Piniella, Cal Ripken Jr., Jerry Royster, Mike Schmidt, Art Shamsky, Joel Skinner, Chris Speier, Rusty Staub, Andy Tomberlin, Joey Votto, Dave Winfield, Robin Yount. And also the umpires Ed Montague and Doug Harvey.

I was helped by Bill Giles in Philadelphia and Tim Hayes in Bristol and Larry Mileo in Long Island and by the encyclopedic Bob Hoie. By Phil Pepe and Bobby Brown. Also John Thorn, Rick Wolff, Roger Kahn, Hal Bodley, Maureen Marion, Josie Johnson, Tom Williams, Rita Crenshaw, Tom Villante, Mark Schraf, Nate Hubbard, Richard Berman, Jack O’Connell, Debbie Boggs, Paul Janszen, Suzi Elliott and Matt Cline.

Some public relations directors were very helpful, including the inimitable Pat Courtney at Major League Baseball and the commissioner’s office. Also the excellent Rob Butcher at the Reds and his colleagues in trade: Greg Casterioto (Phillies), Jay Horwitz and Ethan Wilson (Mets); Joe Jareck and Mark Langill (Dodgers); Tommy Viola (Charlotte Knights); Bob Beghtol (White Sox); Melody Yount (Cardinals) and Matt Roebuck (Marlins).

Out of the land of TV there was Joe Lavine and Steven Stern, Mark Scheibal, Shannon Martin, Laurie Goldberg, Alon Ornstein and Gabriela Tavakoli.

From around Pete, there was J.D. Friedland and Charles Sotto as well as Dan Goossen, Warren Greene and Joie Casey.

Also, for other important perspectives: John Dowd and Fay Vincent, Kevin Hallinan, Joe Daly and Terry Dinan. And Marcus Giamatti.

My research was aided greatly by Amy Gresham in Cincinnati, as well as by Brian Powers at the public library there. The translating work done by Kathrin Perutz was invaluable.

Some people spoke with me and asked not to be mentioned by name. To them, a silent and grateful tip of the cap.

Although Pete Rose did not sanction or facilitate this book, he engaged with me at the times when I got myself to wherever he was, and also by telephone. I interacted and spoke with Rose on various occasions and in various milieus, including Cincinnati, Cooperstown, Las Vegas and New York. I also spoke with Kiana Kim in person and by telephone.

This book, to its great benefit, was supported and aided from the outset by Andrew Blauner, a literary agent, and a man, with the clear eyes and the good sense that anybody would be lucky to have on one’s side.

I and this book were fortunate as well to have had the attention of the excellent David Bauer, an editor of grace, grit and simple wisdom.

Cheers to Elizabeth McGarr McCue—diligent, meticulous, smart—who made sure that fact was fact and nothing but, and contributed as well her own worthy perspective. I don’t know how anyone, anywhere gets anything done without Stefanie Kaufman, who kept this particular ship sailing and on course with her intelligence and diplomacy. Kevin Kerr’s subtle and reasoned work as a copy editor bettered this book time and again.

At Time Home Entertainment thanks to Jim Childs, Joy Bomba and Tom Mifsud, and to Michele Bové for her special and fine attention. Also thanks to Richard Fraiman and Terry McDonell, who believed in this book from its first lines, and at
Sports Illustrated
to Stephen Cannella and Chris Stone. Thanks to the photo-taking of Erick Rasco and the photo-selecting of Cristina Scalet and to the creativity of designer Stephen Skalocky.

These lights never dim: Sonya and Maya—my inspirations and revelations for this work and for so very much more. And finally, this book does not get written, nor does this life get led, without Amy, the harbor and the horizon. No thanks, in any words, would be enough.
