Power (Romantic Suspense) (54 page)

And then it hit me. Sometimes one had to let go of logic and embrace the mystery.

I turned back to Crusher. “Take her to Ebony Forest.”

Sirens blared off in the distance.

“Fuck.” I hated being right. “Go ahead. I’ll keep them busy looking in here. Stay low. Keep on the quiet roads. Once you get to the Ebony Forest you’re good. Play the music as high as you want and relax. I can give you a map for some of the abandoned cabins on the edge of the woods.”

“It’s hard for cops to get to the forest?”

“It’s hard for anybody to drive in that motherfucker and not want to turn around. There’s an odd sensation that pushes at your chest the further you travel inside.”

Crusher raised his bushy eyebrows. “What are you saying?”

“We don’t have time for me to explain that place and even if we did, it would take a good year. Just listen. When you see the signs written in blood, don’t go in that direction.”

“I think I could’ve figured that out.”

“Make sure of it. The people that live on the east side of the forest like to eat other people.”

Crusher blinked with shock. That might’ve been the first time I saw the emotion on his face. “Cannibals?”

“Yes.”

“And what’s on the west side of the forest?”

“I don’t really know. Old cabins. Remember it used to be one of those natural parks that people visited and camped in, and then. . .it just stopped being that.”

The sirens continued to blare, but it would take them a minute to get down the road.

“Take my car,” I said.

“Thank you, boss.”

“No. I’m not your boss anymore.”

“Thank you, Noah.”

I nodded. “I’m serious. If you need my help, I’ve got you. For now, leave your phone and get the fuck out of here. I’ll contact you later.”

“How will you find me?”

“I’ve got friends in the Ebony Forest.”

“The cannibals?”

I grinned. “Yes, the cannibals. Maybe we could get the Spider to meet them.”

“I like the sound of that.” Crusher guided Harmony toward the back of the cottage where one of my cars were parked. “And take care of MJ.”

I thought about her half naked in my bed. My cock stirred.

Minutes later. The siren noise came closer, but Crusher and Harmony had already gone.

“Yo, 305.” I headed back to the living room.

“Yeah,” he murmured.

“Take Harmony’s room and pretend like you’ve been in there all night.”

305 dragged himself up and stumbled toward the back. “That shit won’t be hard. I don’t care how many cops come up in this motherfucker. Once these eyes close, I’m going to be out for a long time.”

Fuji spread out on the couch. “Yeah, fuck those cops. I’m fucking tired. I might even get naked and let them walk in on my bare, fat ass.”

“That might help.” I chuckled and headed back to my room. Whether the cops barreled in here like maniacs or took their time knocking and pretending to be cordial as they looked for Harmony, I would be fucking Mary Jane.

We’d all worked hard and done more than anybody would ever do in their lives.

I breathed in her scent as I walked into the bedroom and found her completely naked.

“It’s about time.” With her legs spread, she toyed with her clit. “I almost came for you.”

“No way, baby.” I dove for the bed. She shrieked. I captured her in my arms. “You’ll never have to come for me. I’m not going anywhere.”

Today was the first day of my life off of the streets, and I fucking loved it.
