Kenly gasps, her hand over her mouth, remembering what I told her earlier. “They killed your father,” she whispers to him, her words more of a thought than her actually wanting to say them.

“Yes, they did,” Xavier says, low, Zara at his side rubbing his arm up and down.

“I’m so sorry,” Kenly says, and the pain she’s feeling cuts through me. I rub my nose and mouth over her cheek, needing to touch her, calm her, take her pain away.

“Thanks,” he replies, shockingly. Zara really has done a number on him. “Back to our problem. We need to figure out who Camp is working with, and what they want. But with the Lobos trying to attack Kenly and then this…there’s got to be a connection. Maggie, is there any way for you to trace where his spells came from?”

“I can try some spells and see if I can get any information, but if Camp’s been blocked there won’t be much I can do until I figure out exactly what spell he’s under. There are so many different ones and the only way to know for certain is from his blood.”

“Like when I went to Marvin,” Zara says softly to the room, looking down at Xavier. “Marvin helped me get all the spells off of me, by taking my blood.”

“Yes, that is the easiest way,” Maggie replies.

“You want me to grab him?” I ask Xavier. I could materialize into his place, grab him, and be back here in a flash.

“Not yet. Let’s get eyes on him, though. I need you to dig deeper, Thor. Get some of the guys on it, too. Have them break into his computer systems, I don’t give a shit. There has to be something, some proof.” Xavier breathes in deeply, his chest puffing out as he does. “We will need to eliminate them,” he says, and I know he’s talking about the Lobos. I have to agree with him. He swipes a hand over his face. “But what I don’t get is why Camp, if he is indeed involved with the Lobos, why? They killed his family. I just don’t get it.”

“You and me both, brother,” I mumble. Thor exits the office with a determined look on his face.

“We’ll work that angle, and anything you can help us with would be appreciated, Maggie.”

Maggie sighs. “Of course. I’d never let anything happen to my granddaughter and that makes all of you family now.” She pauses. “I can’t believe I am family with wolves now.” She shakes her head.

Kenly reaches out and grabs her hand. “Thank you, Grams.” She nods.

“Now, we need to discuss you.” Xavier’s eyes pin on Kenly and a growl escapes. “Down, Max.” I try. “Mind control. You seem to have it. Not many wolves do. It is actually a rarity that is only given to vampires.” Kenly stiffens in my arms. “We know you are not a vamp.” She sags. “You have a unique gift and we need to test it out. I want you to try to get me to do something. Anything. It could be as simple as standing up or moving something on my desk. I need to see if you can control it.”

“Okay,” Kenly says, closing her eyes. Her hands ball into fists and strain shows in her arms. Xavier does nothing. Just waits, his eyes the same as always, not glassy at all. Kenly lifts her head, looking directly at Xavier. “I want you to get up and go to the door.”

Xavier doesn’t move. “All right, we need to find out how exactly your powers work.” He looks to Maggie. “Help?”

“I will do my best.”

“Dammit,” Kenly grumbles. “Maybe I have to be pissed or mad or something for it to work. I was livid with my folks. Maybe that’s my trigger?”

“Could be but we need to figure that out. It could become very useful in the near future,” Xavier replies. “Maggie, you have any idea why Zara can beam light from her body with enough force to knock everything down in her path, and Kenly can do the same but it’s orange?” Xavier rubs Zara’s arm. She’s been exceptionally quiet during this.

“Let me go through some of my books. Is there any way some of the guys can go to my house and pick them up? I’d rather not leave right now,” she asks.

“What do you need? I’ll get it,” I say. It’ll only take me a second and I’ll be right back. And if it will help, we need to get this shit taken care of. Maggie explains exactly what she needs.

I kiss the top of Kenly’s head. “I’ll be right back.” Panic fills her eyes and I pull her in for a deeper kiss and rise from the chair. “Watch.”

I materialize out of the room to a gasp from Kenly and into Maggie’s home. I gather everything she needs and materialize back.

“Holy shit,” Kenly croaks. “You, you…” She trails off as I set the books down for Maggie.

“I can materialize which means I can leave one spot, think of the other and within seconds, I am there,” I reply. Maggie doesn’t seem as surprised.

“That is so freaking cool!” Kenly exclaims. Her enjoyment giving a slight reprieve from the tension in the room. “Can you do that with me?” Her eyes glitter with hope.

“Not now. We have too much shit to deal with.” Her face falls. “Sorry, babe.”

“No, you’re right. I’m just still getting used to all of this.” Kenly climbs back on my lap.

“I’ll take these to the living room and start looking.” Maggie takes off with the bundle. For a witch, she’s pretty strong.

“We need to monitor the media. TV, newspaper, internet, everything. Max, get a couple of guys on that. Also, keep security tight. Any thoughts on the connection?” Xavier asks me.

“I agree with you. I don’t know why Camp would get involved with them. I sure as shit wouldn’t, if anything I’d want vengeance on them.”

“Zara, any thoughts?” Xavier asks his mate.

“I can’t pick up anything.” He kisses her temple and Kenly sighs.

I rub my cheek against hers and she practically purrs. “I’ll get some guys on it.”

Xavier’s cell vibrates. “Yeah,” he answers, and his eyes flash to Zara.

“Shit!” she says, crawling off his lap. “I can hear her, it’s really her.” She jumps to the door. “Nana O is here.”

Maybe she can shed some light on all of this shit.

“Nana O. That’s her grandmother that gave her the crystal?” Kenly asks as we walk hand in hand down the hall.

“Yep. Been trying to get ahold of her for a while now, but she’s been MIA.”

We enter the living room and find Zara hugging the shit out of a beautiful woman who smells exactly like Zara’s old pack.

“Where have you been, Nana?” Zara asks, still holding on tight as her Nana takes in the room.

“Been getting to you. I hid in the woods after you left for quite some time. After the link from your father was disconnected, I made my way to you,” she singsongs.

“I tried to tap in to you.” Zara pulls back, confused.

“I kept you blocked just in case your father found me. I didn’t know exactly what was going on and I didn’t want to give him any way of finding you.” Her gaze drops to Zara’s neck. “Where is it?” Her eyes flash to Zara’s.

“I lost it,” she whispers, words ringing with sorrow.

“No!” Nana O yells, grabbing her chest. “You must find it at once!”

“Nana, what’s going on?” Xavier steps behind his mate, pulling her tight against him.

“That crystal.” She looks around her at the people in the room. “Is it safe to speak?” she asks hesitantly.

“Yes, Nana. These wolves are my family,” Zara explains.

Nana nods. “That crystal is very powerful. If it gets in the wrong hands.” She shakes her head and clenches her stomach with her fists. “We must find it.”

Kenly’s body tenses, no doubt the guilt of losing it riding on her hard at the moment. I give her a squeeze of reassurance and a kiss on the top of her head.

“Why would you give something like that to me?” Zara asks, stunned, now leaning back into Xavier who is taking on her weight with ease.

“Because, my child, you are set to do amazing things. The Heavens told me to give it to you. You and your family are intended to protect us. With the crystal, you will be able to do so, but if it gets into the wrong hands….” She shook her head. “We are all doomed.”

“What do you know?” Xavier questions, his Alpha tone coming through loud and clear.

“It’s time that I told you of the legend,” Nana O says on a large exhale.

Fucking hell.

THE SMELL IS BACK, the same one from the first time I was in this dungy basement library. My wolf growls, wanting to chase down her down, but the man inside struggles to tame him. The smell is strong, but fading fast. She’s not here. My fated mate was here and she smells delicious.

I’m compelled to step outside of the building and in the distance, I fear something or someone being chased. My stomach clenches and a feeling of dread washes over me. I dart in that direction, hoping it’s not what my gut is screaming at me.

The story continues in the final installment of the Raber Wolf Pack series Book 3. Coming Soon.
