I looked down at my feet and felt like an idiot. Of course I liked him, but what the hell was I supposed to do? Move with a guy I have the hots for, with his wife who wants me and doesn’t mind me sleeping with him? And to top it of I’d be getting lavishly paid? This was almost too good to be true, and I’ve learned to be a little pragmatic since the last time I saw him. They were a billionaire power couple with centuries of traditions and I was a call girl who had to pay my rent.
“Chase, thank you for the offer. Really.” I looked at his beautiful soft blue eyes. “You have no idea how hard it is for me to say ‘No.’ I wish you and Amy best of luck.” I brushed past him feeling a slight jolt rush down my spine, and started for the door.
“Wait.” His voice stopped me in my tracks. His eyebrows gathered in. “I told George to be ready to drive you home. He is at the guard booth to the right of the house.” He reached inside his pocket and took out a piece of paper. “This is for you Laura. It was great seeing you again.”
I leaned in and kissed his cheek. He averted his gaze. I opened the door and closed it behind me feeling like I was going to fall to my knees. Feeling like I needed to, like I wanted to cry and to lay there until he came and picked me up in his strong arms and carried me away.
With all my strength I grabbed a hold of a wall and kept myself upright. I took three big breaths until my heart stopped pounding in my chest and ears. Slowly and unsteady I started to walk towards the main staircase. In the daylight the main lobby looked completely different. The light came through the large windows above illuminating the masterfully decorated interior. I walked passed the statues on the bottom of the stairs and pulled the big door open.
George saw me from the guard booth and came out to get the car. I barely muttered hello as I got inside and drowned in soft leather. Tears streamed down my face as we drove past the tall trees, leaving the mansion to disappear behind. I looked down to find something to wipe away my tears and saw the piece of paper I have been clutching in my hand.
I unfolded it. It was a personal check. On the backside was his name and a phone number, with a tag line of “Call me anytime.” On the front, a four figure sum.
THE CHOICE
I walked down the cooled New York streets. The clouds covered the sky casting shadows over the people below. I didn’t want to go home and told George to drop me off by Central Park. I walked down the long pathways, looking at the just barely budded leaves. It was a start of a new season. People were already excited for change as they ran through the park, their confident pace taking them closer to where they wished to be. Kids were playing with dogs nearby. Cyclists sped busily through, their colorful outfits and helmets creating an effect of bright rockets whizzing by. A food vendor was getting helped by the cool breeze, spreading the smells through the air. It was a cold and cloudy spring day and the trees were still almost bare. It was a cold and cloudy day and people still came out to celebrate life.
I sat down on the bench and watched a group of dogs play nearby. The small basset hound was trying to keep up after the bigger dogs as they ran up and down the lawn. He whimpered every time they took off and left him struggling to catch up. Every time they would eventually stop and wait for him, and his tail would happily dart around again, until the other dogs rushed back to the opposite side. It was cold and cloudy, and they didn’t give a damn.
I looked at all the people choosing to do something on this gloomy day. They didn’t sit and wonder what was going to happen. They made things happen for themselves. If they could find recourse, then surely could I. I just had to let go, let go off the years of whatever I managed to build up inside. Let go off whatever and whoever I thought of myself to be, and just be who I really am. I shut my eyes and started to realize I knew where I wanted to be. My mouth slowly stretched into a smile and I reached for my phone.
The end.
