First of all, many thanks to Julie Czerneda and Jana Pannicia for asking me to contribute a story to their anthology,
Under Cover of Darkness
, way back in 2005. Their invite helped crystallize a lot of research I had been doing into Victorian London and faerie lore, and
Rise of the Darklings
grew from that original short story.

Also, a huge shout-out to the amazing team over at Egmont USA. Alison, Mary, Greg, and Robert have been immensely helpful and supportive since I joined the Egmont family. But extra thanks have to go to Elizabeth Law, Regina Griffin, Ruth Katcher, and Nico Medina. Paul Crilley was born in Scotland and moved to South Africa when he was eight years old. He was rather disappointed to find out that Africa was not at all like the Tarzan movies he watched on Sunday afternoons and that he would not, in fact, have elephants and lions strolling through his backyard.
