I kept my head on his shoulder and tightened my grip on his shirt. “Why?”

He ran his hand up and down my back lightly. “I think because we did the right thing, I got to decide. And of course I chose you. After that, it was just a matter of convincing you to put the ring back on.”

“You
think
it was because we did the right thing,” I said, and a hiccup slipped out as my breathing started calming down. “This is too important not to be
sure
.”

He was quiet for long enough that I leaned back and looked up at him. His eyes were distant. “I’m sure about it being my choice,” he said finally. “I know that I can leave again whenever I want. And go back there, and not somewhere else. That’s what matters, right?”

“You’re
sure
?” I pressed. “You’re absolutely one hundred percent positive?”

He thought for another few seconds, then nodded slowly. “Yeah. Yeah, I am.”

I watched his face to make sure he wasn’t lying, then leaned forward and kissed him hard. He chuckled against my mouth and kissed me back, and when he stood and pulled me up with him, I shucked off my outer coat and started kissing him again, pushing him backward toward the bed.

“Have I ever told you how hot you look in that shirt?” he asked me, then reached over his own head and pulled his T-shirt off.

“It’s just a shirt,” I said, going for his belt and kissing his throat while I worked on it.

“A sexy one, though,” he said in a voice that was already sex-rough. “Take it off.”

I shoved him playfully, and he fell back onto the bed and grinned up at me while I gave him my best seductive smile. “I have to do all the work?”

“I can touch the things I care about,” he said, his eyes sliding up and down my body hungrily, “and let me tell you that I do not give the slightest shit about your clothes right now.”

I laughed, and for some reason laughing nearly made me lose it. “Chris,” I said, staring down at him. My voice wavered a little on his name and the corners of my eyes started stinging.

He dropped his sexy rock star grin and looked me in the eyes. “I’m here. This is real.”

“It better be.” I took a deep breath and started pulling off my clothes again. “Pants off,
now
.”

“Bossy,” he said, the grin reappearing along with the heat in his eyes. “I like it.” He unbuttoned his pants and shimmied them off without getting up from the bed.

I finished dropping the rest of my own clothes and crawled on top of him, straddling his waist and moving my hips so that our cocks slid together. We both made strangled moans at the contact, and Chris’s hands flew up to my hips and dug into the skin there.

“Do you want to fuck me?” he asked, a little breathlessly.

“Next time, I promise,” I said. “This time I want it like this.” I leaned off to the side and grabbed the bottle of lube out of the nightstand, then got to work getting ready for him.

Chris trailed his fingers around to my abdomen and then down to my cock, and he started stroking it with both hands while I worked on myself, and it was almost too much. My dick twitched in his hands and his responded with a jerk of its own under me.

“Take as long as you need,” he rasped, “but fucking hurry up too.”

I rolled my eyes and smacked his chest with my free hand, then shifted around and positioned myself over him. “Fast or slow?”

“Oh fuck,” he said, his eyes glazing over a little bit. “Whatever you want, just do it now.”

I leaned down and kissed him, then sat back up and we locked eyes as I slid down on him, taking him in with a gasp and a moan. Chris lifted his hips off the bed to meet me, never taking his eyes off mine, and then he was all the way in and I suddenly felt
whole
again.

I started riding him, slowly at first but then faster, working myself on his dick until I figured out just the right angle. When I found it, my back arched and I threw my head back and gasped.

“That is so fucking sexy,” Chris growled. “Ride me, baby.”

I kept my head tilted up toward the ceiling and rolled my hips faster, grinding myself down onto him, and when he hit my prostate again my eyes flew open and a loud breathy moan escaped my lips. I dropped my eyes back to his and grabbed his biceps, digging my nails in and riding harder, faster, getting him as deep inside me as I could. He stroked my cock, matching my rhythm and wringing more moans out of me.

“Come for me, baby,” he whispered. He cupped my balls with one hand, and I let out a noise that was almost a scream.

It got harder to keep the rhythm as my body started tensing up. His cock brushed my prostate on an upswing, and I froze there, the orgasm rushing toward me. My mouth opened and my back arched and I hovered on the edge for several seconds, my knuckles turning white with the force of their grip on Chris’s arm.

Now
.” Chris grabbed my hips and slammed himself up into me, and I exploded into so many pieces that I might never come back together again.

Chris slipped an arm around my back and executed a maneuver that would have impressed me if my thoughts had been anything close to coherent. Suddenly, he was on top of me, thrusting into me like he couldn’t stop. He kissed me hard on the mouth, using his tongue to mimic the movements of his cock, and then I got with the program enough to tighten around him. He moaned loudly into my mouth and unloaded into me, his whole body jerking with it. He broke the kiss and moved his mouth to my ear, alternately gasping and whispering my name.

I wrapped my legs around his waist and my arms around his neck. “Don’t leave me again.”

“Never,” he said into my ear.

“I mean it, Chris.” I tangled my hand in his hair. “I can’t lose you again.”

“I know.” He rested his forehead against mine and closed his eyes. “I can’t lose you either.”

We stayed like that for several seconds, then I relaxed my grip and let him slide out of my body and lie down beside me. I kissed him and he kissed back, but this time it was a slow, lazy kiss, the type that meant we had all the time in the world and didn’t need to rush anymore. I hooked my leg over his waist and pressed our bodies together and let the kiss go on. When we finally pulled away, we just sort of gazed into each other’s eyes for a long time, brushing hair back from each other’s faces and smiling like we’d never smiled before.

“Thank you,” I whispered once my pulse had returned to normal.

“For what?” he asked, even though I was sure he knew.

“For coming back to me. For choosing this.” I made a vague motion at the two of us.

“Don’t thank me for that.” He brushed his fingers through my hair. “It was at least fifty percent selfish. I mean, come on, you’re a pretty good fuck and you have a cute butt. Why wouldn’t I want to keep you a little longer?” He grinned at me and kissed the tip of my nose.

I rolled my eyes at him. “Jesus, the Cool Points Tally rises again.”

“Damn straight.”

I put my head back down on his chest and snaked my arm around his side. I considered making an innuendo about all the things that were going to rise again, but I just couldn’t muster the shit-eating grin that would need to accompany that. “Fuck, I’m tired. I need to rest.”

“You sleep as long as you need to,” he said. “I’ll watch over you.”

I shook my head against his chest. “No way can I sleep right now. I’m way too wired for that. I just need to
not move
for about eight hours.”

He nodded and sat up in bed. I pushed myself to a sitting position too and watched him stand and put his clothes back on, then I leaned over the side of the bed and picked up my boxers and shimmied them back on as quickly as I could.

“Grab your blanket,” Chris said. “I’ll carry you to the couch, and I’ll let you force me to watch
Star Trek
all night long.”

Next Generation
?” I asked, wrapping the blanket and my sheets around myself and preparing to be scooped up.

He wrinkled his nose. “If we
must
.”

“I keep telling you I don’t know if I can associate with someone whose favorite
Trek
is
Voyager
,” I said, giving him a mock-stern look.

“Well, you’re stuck with me.” He picked me up and carried me over to the couch, and I took a moment to imagine how this would look to an outside source—me levitating across the living room. We would have to figure out a way to get some fun out of that someday.

“At the risk of losing Cool Points,” I told him, running my fingers over his jaw with a silly smile on my face, “I’m totally okay with that.”

Thank you so much for Reading the Rainbow!

RiptidePublishing.com

This book would not have been possible without the unwavering support of my family and friends. In particular, I am thankful to Sarah for listening to hours upon hours of me alternately ranting, gushing, crying, and cheering about the story, and for allowing me to talk about my characters like they were real people without having me committed. Other people who also deserve my deepest gratitude on this front are: Kasey, Wendy (aka Mom), Alicia, Bill, Brandy, Kai, and Kim, all of whom served as test readers, cheerleaders, and amateur therapists at some point during the journey. I’m not kidding when I say I couldn’t have done it without you.

I am also grateful to the FBI for turning a blind eye to my incessant internet searches about dead bodies, heroin abuse, and how one would go about finding a drug dealer if one needed to do so. I sincerely doubt I could have written this from prison, so here’s to you guys for not putting me there.

Finally, I am extremely grateful to the wonderful team at Riptide Publishing who took a chance on a first-time writer and helped make this novel what it is today. Every single person at Riptide is a joy to work with and I look forward to many more collaborations in the future.
