Rose Bride (42 page)

‘By loving me,’ she whispered.

‘That’s it. An arduous task, but one I have embraced as my husbandly duty. Though some nights I wish you would wander in your sleep again. I did so love to play with your delectable body while you were dreaming and unaware—’

‘Why, you . . .!’

Virgil grinned, catching her hand before she could slap him. ‘Rough play? Not while my mother is watching, dearest. Though if you wish to obey
me
later, I will be happy to oblige and play master.’

She bit her lip, trying not to laugh. ‘Listen, you must speak to your mother properly, Virgil. This silence has gone on long enough. It is time.’

She understood the wariness in his face. He feared reliving the horrors of his childhood, and what demons that might bring back into his heart. Demons they had chased away together with love. But his mother was growing old, and Virgil would regret it forever if she died before he could steel himself to open his heart to her. She could not allow that to happen.

‘Must I?’ His eyes were dark with pain, but he bent and kissed her mouth passionately, then rested his cheek against hers. ‘I have not yet forgotten, you see,’ he whispered into her ear.

‘You never will, my love, I assure you. But perhaps . . . you may be able to forgive?’

With an effort, Virgil nodded.

‘Come then, sir, and let us both be healed.’ Margerie linked her hand with Virgil’s, lacing their fingers tight, and smiled at her doctor husband. ‘Together.’
