“Take every opportunity that is presented to you to learn and hold on to it with both hands. Find ways to be strong, internally as well as physically, so you can protect yourself and those you love because it will empower you to also help others. The saying “Love, Live, and Laugh” really does ring true and the more you find ways to do all three the richer your life will be.
“Many of us will be leaving here for college, some for the military, and some will chose a path that will only lead them to destruction. You have the power in your hands to be great - don’t waste it. There are innocents out there who need strong leaders, heroes, and saviors. Take up a cause, give it your best and your heart will lead you in the right direction.
“Again, thank you to the faculty and students of San Antonio Prep School for the opportunity to be more than what I was when first coming here. I will strive to make you proud.”
Gayle took her seat without looking up again. There were only one hundred and fifty graduating students for this year and when the President of the school presented them to the audience a silent pause was rocked by all of the students rising to their feet with a rebel yell, tossing their caps into the air. Of course, they had been told not to do this very thing but what the hell. You only graduated once!
Gayle turned to look back over her shoulder to the third row at the fifty-yard line where her family sat. The twins, Josiah and Jonah were sitting next to Ty, and Lonnie had gone back to his seat next to Melissa. Her vision shimmered as she realized once again just how fortunate she was to have adoptive parents like the two federal agents in her life to help protect the boys so she could concentrate on school. A little over two years ago she was certain all of their fates were destined for a path far worse and heinous than the one they actually ended up taking. Closing her eyes, Gayle dropped a few of her mental blocks and reached out to her best friend and adoptive mother.
“
Can you hear me?
” she whispered along the shimmering tentacles of the universe, hoping Melissa could still hear her. She hadn’t tried since the Team had rescued them from the house on Lake Tanglewood.
“Of course, sweetie. You did great, girl and I’m so proud of you!”
She could almost feel the smile that she knew Melissa wore as she looked up where Ty stood with his arm around her.
“Thank you again. For saving us, loving us, and especially believing in me.”
“Always, love. We are both so proud of you going to the University of Maryland for your Criminal Justice Degree."
She watched as Melissa wiped her eyes but could see she was still smiling. That’s all she needed to know.
Her classmates surrounded her and Gayle found herself hoisted up onto broad shoulders and held in the air as several of the bigger male students carried her toward the stands. Her friends may not be privy to everything that had happened in her life but they all knew just how important Ty and Melissa were to her. All of them had met her brothers at one time or another. With gentle hands she was sat on the bottom steps of the bleachers in front of her mother and father, engulfed in arms of love and hugged by her brothers until she couldn’t breathe. Life was good, and she intended to make it better for so many others out there.
They were finally safe, and it was the most amazing feeling of all.
