My head snaps in Will’s direction. “You piece of shit! Will you tell them the truth or so help me God, I’ll ruin you,” I yell at him.

“Your fucking husband went into a jealous fucking rage and broke my arm! Look at my face, Kat, you think I did that to myself? You weren’t even here! That fucker has you so twisted up that you wouldn’t know the truth if it bit you on the ass!” yells Will.

I look at Dirt and Judge, who are now handcuffed and being escorted from the room.

“Where are you taking them?” I demand.

One of the officers stops and looks at me. “Both were carrying handguns.”

In unison, Judge and Dirt say, “I have a license to carry that.”

The officer smiles. “Guess we need to check that out.”

Dirt looks at me. “You, all right? Did they hurt you?”

It’s then I realize my shoulder is sore. “My shoulder is sore.”

Dirt looks at the officer standing over me. “That is Kat Saunders, rockstar, if I were you, I’d get her to the hospital and get her checked out, so she doesn’t sue your ass.”

The officer looks from Dirt to me and stands me up, unlocking the handcuffs.

“You can go with Mr. Van Ryken to the hospital. We can question you there.”

Dirt smiles and winks at me as he and Judge are escorted out of the room.

“I’m not riding in an ambulance with her! She’s just as fucking bad as those fuckers,” says Will.

A paramedic walks through the door and an officer points at me and then Will. “She has a sore shoulder, and he appears to have a broken arm,” he explains as the paramedic stops in front of me.

“Ma’am, where does it hurt?” asks the paramedic.

“I have a broken arm, and you go to
her
first?
Really
?” says Will sounding like a child.

The paramedic cocks an eyebrow at me and looks at Will. “Sir, another paramedic, will be with you shortly.”

The officer beside me smirks and another paramedic comes through the door; he goes immediately to Will.

“It’s about fucking time,” whines Will.

The paramedic starts to examine his arm and Will faints, hitting his head on the corner of a table as he goes down. Blood sprays from his head wound and the officer next to me moves to help the paramedic.

My paramedic escorts me from the room as two more go running through the door. “Ma’am your shoulder feels fine, but to be sure, we are going to take you in and check you out properly.” He looks back over his shoulder. “Mr. Van Ryken will be well taken care of. Head wounds always bleed badly. He’ll be fine.”

I smile at him, but I don’t care one little bit about Will Van Ryken, hopefully he’ll bleed to death. I don’t say any of this to the paramedic, instead I smile and let him escort me to the elevator.

T
he paramedic is a massive fan and asks me a lot of questions, he also makes sure Will is in a separate ambulance to me so that I’m not aggravated anymore than necessary. He’s very sweet, and when I arrive at the hospital, reporters are everywhere. Thankfully they aren’t allowed into the hospital. The paramedic wheels me to a private room, then leaves to find me a doctor. Moments later there’s a knock at my door.

“Yes?”

Juan Cortez walks in, dressed as a doctor with a white coat and stethoscope around his neck.

“Hello Mrs. Reynolds, how are you?”

“What are you doing Mr. Cortez?”

“Too many police around, please excuse my deception. I wanted to make sure you are all right. I’m sorry about Dane. He’s been arrested. It seems one of my associates got carried away and broke Van Rykens arm. God knows what reason he’s telling the authorities that your husband did it.”

“It’s because he’s a fucking asshole. Can’t your man come forward and tell the truth?” I ask.

“And the reason he broke his arm is that he owes me two hundred and fifty k for drugs. No Kat, he can’t come forward,” Juan replies.

“I see your point.”

“Are you hurt?” Juan asks looking worried.

“When the officer cuffed me, he pushed me to the ground; my shoulder is a bit sore. That’s all. It’s nothing, but when someone like me gets hurt they have to make sure I’m okay, it was pointed out I might sue,” I laugh remembering Dirt’s comments.

“Ahh, power and money that’s a big motivator,” agrees Juan.

The door opens, and a man dressed almost the same as Juan walks into the room.

“I hadn’t realized someone was attending the patient,” asks the doctor.

Juan winks at me. “I’m not, just a huge fan paying my respects. I’ll leave you to it, doc.” Juan grins at me and leaves the room.

The doctor looks at me quizzically. “A huge fan?”

“I’m in a band; he’s a fan.”

The doctor starts to examine my shoulder. “Would I know the band?”

I smile at him. “You might, The Grinders?”

He looks thoughtful for a moment then shakes his head. “No, sorry.” He looks intently at my shoulder as he rotates my arm. “Does that hurt?”

“A little.”

The doctor continues to feel and prod me for a few more minutes then looks me in the eyes. “You appear to be fine. It feels like it’s a sprain, nothing is broken. Ice it if it gets sore and I’ll prescribe some anti-inflammatories to help with any swelling.”

The doctor is nice, and it’s been so long since someone hasn’t known who I am that it takes me a little by surprise. He smiles at me and leaves the room. There’s a knock at the door and before I can say anything, it opens, and the police officer who handcuffed me walks in.

“I see the doc just left, you okay?”

“I’m fine. Are you going to charge me with anything?”

“No Ma’am, you’re free to go.”

“How the hell did you get to the hotel so quickly?” I ask.

“When there’s a large crowd, they assign us to stay close to the action. Seeing as you are famous the department wants to make sure no whack job kills you in our city. We were a block away when we got the call,” explains the officer.

“Do you know where they took my husband?” I ask, standing up.

“He got taken downtown. He has been charged with assault and resisting arrest.”

“What!” I shout.

“He did break Mr. Van Ryken’s arm.”

“No, he didn’t! Will owed a drug dealer and he didn’t have the money, so they broke his arm. If I’m not being charged, can I go?”

“Sorry, Ma’am, did you say this was all over a drug deal gone bad?” asks the officer staring at me intently.

Crap. Me and my big mouth. “I don’t expect you to believe me; I’m sure Will has already given a statement but yes.”

The officer looks thoughtful for a moment. “You have a good day, Ma’am.”

I cock my head to the side and look at him. “That’s it; I can go?”

“Yes, Ma’am.” I don’t wait to be told twice; I head for the door. “Ma’am?” I stop and look at him questioningly. “Would you like a ride to the police station?”

“No, it’s cool, I’ll find my own way, but thank you.”

The officer holds out a card. “You need anything, you call me.”

I take the card, smile, and walk out.

When I get to the ground floor of the hospital, I dial Dave, my manager.

“Where the hell are you?” demands Dave as he answers the phone.

“I’m at the Houston Methodist Hospital.”

“So am I. Where are you exactly?”

“Almost at the front doors.”

“Stay where you are, we’re coming to you. The press are everywhere outside. Stay put!” says Dave as he hangs up on me.

I take a seat in a chair and look around, trying to spot Dave. It’s not long before I see him, Veronica and a dozen security guards walking toward me. I stand and wave at him, signaling where I am.

Dave embraces me, leaving his hands on my shoulders, he leans back and fires a barrage of questions at me, “Are you okay? What the fuck happened? And what do you need me to do?”

“I’m fine. Will lied to the police and said Dane broke his arm. I need you to get me to the police station so I can get Dane out of jail, and I need you to ruin Will-fucking-Van Rykens career.”

Dave smiles and nods. “Done,” is his response as he throws an arm around my shoulders and walks us to the entrance. “Keep the press back and get us to the car,” he orders the security guards as they surround us.

D
ave and Veronica are talking on their cells for the entire trip to the police station. When the limo stops, I go to open the door, but Dave puts a hand on my arm, stopping me. He holds up a finger and I relax back into the seat waiting for him to finish his call. All I want to do is get in there and get Dane out. Impatiently, I start tapping my foot and Dave reaches over and puts his hand on my knee. He finishes the call and leans forward, grabbing both my hands.

“Before you go in, he’s been charged, and as there were weapons in the room and as Will is claiming they were going to kill him, it could get upgraded to attempted murder.”

“It’s not true–“

“I know that. I just need you to understand this may not be as easy as you hope it will be. Dane is in serious trouble. I’ve been on the phone with the best defense lawyer here in Houston, he’s going to represent all of them. It’s late in the day and they may not let him out, prepare yourself for that, okay princess?”

I nod. “Okay, let's do this.”

Veronica is first out of the car, followed by me, then Dave. A few of the local press are here and begin firing questions at me.

Dave places an arm around my shoulders and Veronica walks up three the stairs of the police station, turns and says, “I’ll be taking questions for Mrs. Reynolds. You have five minutes.”

Dave keeps me moving into the building as Veronica starts answering questions. He guides me to the front desk, to an overweight, middle-aged man who looks at me with vacant, uncaring eyes.

“Yes?” he asks bored.

I straighten my shoulders and say, “My husband, Dane Reynolds was arrested and is in your cells. I’m here to pay whatever I have to, to get him out.”

He smiles at me, looks at Dave, and back to me then he starts flipping through paperwork on his desk. When he finally looks up, I have tears in my eyes.

Frowning he says, “Sorry, no can do. Your husband has been charged with grievous bodily harm. He’ll be remanded overnight, and his bail hearing is set for tomorrow.”

“Officer, we can see you are extremely busy, is there a superior we might speak with?” asks Dave in an affable tone.

The officer stands and looks at Dave with contempt. “Sure, Mr.?”

“My name is Dave Lawrence and this is Katarina Saunders. Perhaps you’ve heard of her?”

“Nope,” he responds immediately.

“I see, is there someone else we might speak to?”

The officer walks slowly away, he stops and chats with another officer, they both look at us and laugh. Then he proceeds to walk to the back of the building and out of view.

“What are we going to do?” I ask Dave.

“Relax, your lawyer is on his way, I need you to be strong and play the rockstar for me. Someone in here
must
be a fan.” He glances at me. “Princess, you are a strong independent woman. You have millions of fans and a husband who adores you. Stop those tears,
now
. I told you this wasn’t going to be easy.” I nod and Dave grabs me by shoulders. “It’s performance time. Here they come. Plaster a smile on that pretty face of yours and be the diva I know you can be.” Dave lets me go and looks at two men walking toward us.

I square my shoulders and smile at them. As they get closer, one of the men extends his hand to me and I clasp it in both of mine, shaking it.

“Thank you so much for coming out here to see me,” I say with false enthusiasm. “Your officer here is doing a fine job, but he can’t help me with my problem, perhaps you can?”

“Kat Saunders! I’m a huge fan. I’m Lieutenant Jones, please, come this way,” gushes the Lieutenant.

He pushes a button and a door opens, he holds it open for me as Dave and we walk through.

“Lieutenant Jones this is my manager, Dave Lawrence.”

Dave shakes his hand. “I have huge respect for those in law enforcement.”

“Thank you so much. Please, come back to my office.”

“I would love to!” I say as I link my arm through the Lieutenant’s.

Dave winks at me as we walk toward his office. When we are seated inside, the Lieutenant sits behind his desk and the smile falls off his face.

“I’m afraid Ms. Saunders, or can I call you Kat?”

“Kat is fine,” I say with a smile.

“Kat,” his grin gets bigger, “my officer is correct, we can’t let you take Mr. Reynolds home tonight but as a favor to you, we could let you see him for a few minutes. How does that sound?”

I’m so disappointed I could cry. Dave squeezes my knee and stands.

“That would be fabulous Lieutenant! Kat would appreciate that,” Dave says, extending his hand to the man.

The Lieutenant stands and shakes Dave’s hand but his eyes don’t leave my face. “There’s no way I can get Dane out tonight?” I ask.

He shakes his head. “Sorry, it’s a serious charge.”

“Okay, then I’d be grateful if you would allow me to see him,” I say with a fake smile on my face.

The Lieutenant sits back down and picks up his phone. Dave places a hand on my shoulder and I’m instantly away of the tension building in my muscles when he gives it a squeeze. I look up at him, pained and exhausted but he smiles down at me and my body succumbs slightly knowing Dave is here and he’ll look after everything.

The Lieutenant stands and says, “If you’ll just follow me?”

My heart is pounding, and I want to scream at him to let Dane go, but I know it won’t do any good. I stand to follow the Lieutenant, as he leads me to a room with a large mirror on one wall. Dave guides me to a seat at the table and turns to the Lieutenant.

“Was it really necessary to bring her into an interrogation room?” asks Dave.

“It was with either here, or the cells, and I don’t think Kat here would like that. I’ll make sure he’s on his way up, this shouldn’t take long.” Lieutenant Jones smiles at me and leaves the room.

“You okay, princess?”

“Yes, Dave, but I really thought we’d get him out. How the hell do we get Will to admit this is all a bunch of bullshit? His drug dealer came and saw me in the hospital, he admitted his man got carried away when he broke Will’s arm but also said he couldn’t exactly come forward. What are we going to do?”
