“Jack and I need to head down to the barn and check on some of the horses. I’ll be home later, honey.” Caleb kissed his wife and daughter goodbye. A touch of jealousy zinged through Jenna’s heart. They were a real married couple, something she’d experienced too briefly . . . if at all.

“I need to make some phone calls. I guess I’ll see you all later.” She put her empty plate in the dishwasher along with her coffee cup. She turned and almost ran straight into Jack. Instinctively, she took a step back and threw up her hands between them to ward him off. Completely unnecessary, and the slight frown he gave her told her how much her backing away hurt him.

“Who are you calling?”

She dropped her hands and answered without acknowledging what she’d done without thinking. “Ben. I need to take care of a few things with him.”

“What things?” Jack was afraid she’d call Ben and hightail it right out of his life now that she was feeling better. He didn’t want to see that happen when he was just starting to realize how much she could mean to him. Already did mean to him, judging by the zip of alarm that shot through him.

“Jack, I don’t let people into my life. For very good reasons. Let me do what I have to do.”

“As long as it doesn’t include running away from me.”

“I have no reason to run away from you. But I’ll do everything I can to protect you and your family from the person who did this to me.”

“Protect us from whom?”

“We’ll talk about that later. I’m not ready yet. Time, Jack. Give me a little time to settle, to let the thoughts and pictures in my head clear.”

What she meant was time to trust him with her secrets. He’d already set his mind to earning that trust. So he’d wait, but he didn’t have to like it.

“You’re making this hard. I can’t protect you, or my family, if I don’t know who’s after you. This is my ranch, my family.” He bent and kissed her lightly on the mouth. This time, her hesitation lasted a split second and vanished. Progress. “Stay with me. Let me help you.”

Stay with me.
Those words hadn’t come easy for him. Trusting him didn’t come easy for her either.

“I’m trying. I’ve been alone a long time. Asking you to help me opens you and your family up to the nightmare I live. Let me call Ben. I’ll settle some things and figure out what’s best. Then we’ll talk. That’s the best I can do right now. This is hard for me. I don’t want to involve you and your family, but I can’t bring myself to walk away from you either.”

She took a deep steadying breath. “I care about you, and it’s tearing me up to think I might have put you in danger by coming here.” She thought acknowledging her feelings and telling him would make her nervous and anxious. It didn’t. Instead, it settled her and centered her in a way she didn’t expect. “It’s only been a matter of days, most of which I’ve been passed out. Every instinct tells me something special is happening here, but another part of me is scared to trust those instincts.”

Because she’d trusted another man and he’d turned on her. “I’d never hurt you.”

“I know that,” she said too fast and with a hesitant note to her words.

“No, you don’t. Not really. One day you will, and until then I’ll spend every moment proving it to you.”

“I’m sorry. I’m sure it seems I’m pulling you close and pushing you away all at the same time. I’m not playing games.”

“I never thought you were.”

“If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s not to waste time. Unfortunately, I haven’t had the luxury of taking time to build new relationships with people. In order to at least try to make this happen and explore this thing between us, I need to take care of and set up a few things to protect myself and you.”

He slipped his hand around the back of her neck and held her close. “I won’t let anything happen to you. Promise, promise me you won’t run away.”

“I can’t make that promise. If he comes for me, I won’t let him touch you, or Caleb, or Summer. I won’t let that evil get to Lily.”

“I don’t think I can live without you, now that I’ve found you,” Jack admitted on a ragged whisper.

“You woke me up from a nightmare. I want a life, a real life. I don’t want to be afraid. I want to know I’m home.” She ran her hands over his chest, just the small contact to steady her world and let her know this is real. He’s real. “Let’s talk about this later. Caleb is waiting for you down at the barn. Go. I’ll make my calls, and then I think I’ll take a walk and get some exercise.”

He bent his brow to hers. They stood nose to nose. “Are you staying?”

She placed her hands on his cheeks and held him to her. “Yes, Jack. I want to stay here with you.”

“That’s a good place to start.”

“Are you going to bolt?” she teased, because guys tended toward retreat when commitment was on the line.

“Not a chance. Any other time, any other woman, and the thought of them moving in would make me run for the hills. It’s different with you.” He gently brushed his fingertips along her bruised jaw. “You’re different. I’m not sure what this thing between us is, but I know I don’t want to lose it before I know for sure.” He kissed her forehead and pressed his cheek to her head and held her for a moment before he reluctantly released her. “Be here when I get back.”

Chapter Twenty-One

“I
T’S
R
ABBIT
. I need Ben.”

Efficient as ever, his staff put her through to Ben immediately. Even when he was in court, they managed to get him for her with relative ease.

“Ben, you’re going to earn those big bucks I pay you today.”

“I guess you’re feeling better.” Relief tinged his words. “It’s so good to hear your voice, and more so to hear you sounding like your old self. I’ve been worried about you. Jack’s kept me apprised of how you’re doing. Everything okay?”

“So far. Do you know where he is?”

“Paris. Some business or other.”

“How long will he be gone?”

“At least another week. He’s negotiating buying some company. The soonest he’ll be back, maybe three days.”

“Right. I saw that in my email from the company detailing the purchase. Do you know what his schedule is after Paris?”

“No, something’s going on at his office. My source hasn’t been able to dig anything up. That’s why I don’t know for certain his return date.”

“Okay. Three days gives me time to get my wits back and decide what to do.”

“What do you mean, what to do?”

“Not just me, you’re going to help. It’s time to end the hunt. I need to figure out the best way to do that without getting myself killed, or anyone here hurt.”

“You know I’m with you, Rabbit. You’re my best client, not to mention my friend.”

She smiled and sighed wearily. “Thanks. That means a lot. You’ve been a good friend to me over the years and the only constant in my life. I wish I could repay you for what you’ve done.”

“Something’s different. You sound hopeful. I mean, you usually have a great attitude, but I don’t know. I can’t put my finger on it.”

“It’s Jack. He’s the best gift you could’ve given me. You were right about him. He saved me in more ways than I knew I needed saving. His quiet strength and unflappable confidence rubbed off on me, I guess you could say. Being here with him and his family has shown me what a real life could be like having people around who care about you, really care deeply and unconditionally.”

“You deserve so much more than what you’ve gotten over the years. I hope you’ve found some happiness.”

“I’m starting to feel like everything that’s happened has led up to this. It’s time to stop running and do something. That’s where you come in.”

“What do you want me to do?”

She started back up the stairs. Slow going, her leg hurt each time she used it to lift herself up a step, but she needed to exercise the muscles. “First, did you send me a new computer?”

“Didn’t you get your packages?”

“Yeah, I just haven’t opened them yet. I will. Is the computer in there?”

“Yes, your usual laptop, twenty thousand in cash, your mail, copies of statements and business papers. Look those over, there’ve been a lot of changes.”

“How’s my project with Mike going? Has he kept things quiet and hidden?”

“So far, we’ve seen no outward signs anyone has taken notice. He’s got things split up between several of your trusts, which have your name buried deep. Someone would have to dig to find out they all belong to you. Of course, they’ll know interest in the stock has increased.”

“How long until I have what I want?”

“I don’t know for sure. Mike’s kept things fairly spread out over the last two years. He doesn’t want to send up any flags. You don’t need that much more. Once you have it, we can change all the trusts back to your name whenever you want. What will you do once you’ve got this?”

“Show him that he can’t get away with hurting me.”

“You’re playing with fire.”

“No. So far, I’ve let others tie my hands, tell me to be patient and let the system work for me. While I wait, he comes after me again. Enough. This is the only way to hurt him.”

“What do you want me to do? All your long-term plans are moving along.”

“I want you to draw up a new will and a couple of new trusts. I’ll email you all the specifics. Can you send the papers to me tomorrow morning to sign? Double copies. You’ll see why when you get the email. I’ll need a set and the others can go back to you. I want them before I leave to go shopping with the girls.”

“Shopping with the girls?”

“Yes. I intend to be a normal person tomorrow. I’m taking Jack’s sister, Summer, and niece, Lily, out for the time of their lives.”

“Do you need me to do anything for that?”

“I’ll put it all in the email.”

“Sounds like you’re enjoying this.”

“I am. It’s time I had fun. I’m going to do something good. Wait till you see the email. After all the time you’ve known me, I think this email will be a shock. Look for it in a few minutes. Get to work. I want those papers tomorrow. And thanks, Ben.”

“I’ll look for the email in ten. I hope I get to hear you like this more often.”

“I hope so, too. Call me when all the arrangements for tomorrow are done.”

“I will.”

She held the phone in her hand and gazed out the window to the trees beyond. For the first time in a long time, things were going her way. In control of her life, her direction, she savored the powerful feeling. She had Jack to thank for her newfound determination.

Chapter Twenty-Two

J
ENNA OPENED THE
boxes from Ben and found the new laptop. She used her cell phone to connect to the Internet and her email account and sent Ben instructions to carry out her plans. On course to complete her goal, she’d give her ex the shock of his life if she pulled this off. She had to pull it off. Time to take a stand. Bodyguards, walls, gates, time, distance, nothing had protected her. She’d always known the only way to end this was to give her ex a very powerful reason not to come looking for her again. Thanks to Ben and his team, she had that reason.

She found it difficult to think of what her life could be like without her ex-husband hunting her like a wild animal. This life is all she knew now. She thought of Jack and decided life could be wonderful. Images of them happy together for years to come were so easy to conjure, it scared her.

After replying to several emails, tired of her own company, she took her cell phone, left her pretty room, and went outside with Sally. The fresh air smelled of grass and honeysuckle from the bush by the front steps. The sun warmed her face, and she gazed up at the bright sky and took a deep breath and relaxed.

“Where should we go?”

Sally barked and took off to the barn.

“Okay. Let’s go see Jack,” she said, talking to air. Sally disappeared through the wide doors. Jenna made her way down the gravel driveway to the huge building at her own slow pace.

The face of the barn was made of river rock, up from the ground three feet. The rest was wood painted white with dark blue trim. Jack really had a thing for blue. Outdoor paddocks led inside to stalls down both sides of the building. Some of them held gorgeous brown quarter horses. The top level of the barn had lots of windows and a hay-filled loft. The scent of hay and horses enveloped her as she stepped into the corridor and let her eyes adjust to the dimmer light.

Unsure where to find Jack and Caleb, she walked down the spacious center aisle that led back to some rooms at the far end. Jack must have an office down the way.

The horses moved and shifted in their stalls. Some peeked their heads over the doors. A few men worked in the barn, taking care of the horses. She smiled but kept her distance, Sally keeping pace beside her.

She came upon an open stall door with only a thick rope across it to keep the huge stallion inside. He moved to the opening and blocked her path with his big head. The most gorgeous horse she had ever laid eyes on.

He bobbed his gray head up and down, stomped a hoof, and blew through his nostrils into her hair. She immediately reached up and rubbed her hands over his long nose and along the side of his face. She stood in front of him stroking his neck and talking softly. He put his head over her shoulder and let her stroke behind his ears. She nuzzled her head against his. The scrape of boots fast approaching startled her.

A man carrying a strap in his hand drew closer. Panic stole her rational thoughts and she moved toward the horse, away from the threat.

“Miss, get away from him. He bites and might stomp on you. I don’t want you to get hurt.”

Jenna put up a hand. “Don’t come any closer.” Her voice weak, panic rose and took over her senses.

Sally barked several times and Jenna ducked under the rope into the stall. The big stallion went along with her. She backed up to the far wall. Every cell inside her screamed run. Trapped, fear overtook her, freezing her in place inside the stall behind the huge horse.

“Miss, that horse is mean as can be.” He stood at the open stall door, blocking her exit, and called to her. “You gotta come out.”

Jenna’s focus zeroed in on the strap hanging from his hand. Unable to move, her knees went weak. She crouched down with her back to the wall, the horse moving, so he stood completely over her. She kept her eyes glued to the man with the strap and folded her arms around her knees.
