Scent of a Woman (17 page)

She could envision late nights with him in her home, cooking together as the summer shadows grew long and taking meals out on her patio by candlelight. She would show him her garden, the place where she’d learned to love perfume. And they could go to museums to see the paintings her mother had loved best. They could choose new favorites together.

He was about to kiss her but she halted him, her hands on his shoulders, conscious of a small crowd gathering outside her office window.

“There is so much I want to do with you to celebrate this decision. You will not be sorry, Adam.”

“I know I won’t be.” His voice took on a rough edge and she looked forward to being alone with him and creating new memories to add to the ones that had kept her awake at night this last month.

“You know what we’re going to do first?” She walked her fingers down his shoulder to rest on his chest.

“Seal the deal with a kiss?”

She nodded toward the crowd of shoppers and a few crew members from
Alexandra’s Dream
who had started frequenting her shop in the last few weeks.

“We have a bit of an audience. How about I take you to a bar a few streets over that boasts this darts game you like so well and we can kiss behind the American jukebox?”

He threw his head back and laughed, the warm sound wrapping her in the promise of good things to come.

“I would love to play darts with you, but I think these people have gathered around your window because they think the French are dedicated romantics.”

“I am a respected businesswoman, not a French schoolgirl with her first boyfriend.” Still, she leaned closer, more than willing to be convinced.

“You may be a powerful executive, but you are a wild woman at heart.”

“Oui.”
She smiled, falling into the heat of his eyes. “But only for you.”

Their mouths met with all the suppressed longing of a month apart, and Danielle’s heart opened wide for this man who had taught her to trust again.

Outside, the throng of cruise ship passengers whistled and applauded, perhaps enjoying the idea of love and romance and happily-ever-afters almost as much as Danielle and Adam.
