Secrets of Moth (The Moth Saga, Book 3) (36 page)

"She will be good, kind,
and wise," she said. "We will raise her to heal this world,
to show the world that night and day are one—the way they are one in
her. Perhaps some will think us cruel, bringing a torn baby into this
world, but I don't see her as torn. I see her as the only whole child
in Moth."

Sleeping now, Madori mumbled and
kicked, perhaps dreaming.

May
your dreams always be good, my child,
Koyee thought, looking upon her.
May
we build you a life better than ours . . . a world safer than the one
we fought in. Your parents love you, little Madori, and we will
always protect you.

Madori calmed, still asleep, and
Torin leaned down and kissed her forehead. Koyee was meaning to turn
back home when movement caught her eye and she froze.

A duskmoth came flying down
toward them, one wing black and the other white. It landed on
Madori's head, and the babe stirred and seemed to smile but did not
wake. The moth tilted its head, twitched its antennae, then took
flight and vanished into shadows and light.
