That simple statement made her giggle. Much later, when the revelers were gone from the beach and the only sound was the water hitting the sand, they went out into the night. Her house would be closed for a while, and her business had a sign on the door letting customers know she’d be gone. Outside on the beach stood two rows of reindeer and a huge red sleigh. He bundled her up in the seat under furs and blankets before climbing in next to her.

 

“What about you? Won’t you get cold?” Neeva asked.

 

Nicholas explained. “Honey, I was born in a cavern of snow in the middle of the North Pole. We don’t feel the cold.”

 

“Will your family like me, your mother and father?” Gods or not, parents were parents, and Neeva felt nervousness in the pit of her stomach.

 

“My mother will love you, and my father as long as you show him how to make rum punch will adore you.”

 

“Lucky for me, I brought the batch I made.” .

 

Nicholas gave her a lingering kiss before he took the reins and called out a command in a language she did not understand. They rose into the sky without even a bump, and soon her island home was gone from sight. Magic had brought her a love to last the span of time. To Neeva, it was a Merry Christmas after all.
