“Kate,” he breathed. “I . . . I think . . .” and then he took the final step, and I felt his body against mine. He kissed me, and I kissed him. He touched me so gently—held me so lovingly—

kissed me until I was dizzy.

He pulled back, only to lay his mouth against my forehead, his hands tenderly cradling my face. “I love you,” he stated softly, lips brushing the lightly bruised area with a gentle kiss. “I think I have since the first moment I saw you.” I opened my eyes and smiled, loving the feel of his lips on my skin. “I’m sorry it took me so long to get here,” I whispered.

I felt his head shake ever so slightly. “You’re here. That’s what matters. If this is what you want.” I slipped my bandaged hands over his shoulders, wrapping my arms around his neck. I pulled him closer, bringing his lips back to mine. I kissed him, and then spoke against his lips—knowing that I’d never answered a question this truthfully, this confidently.

“Yes. You’re exactly what I want.” And then he kissed me, stopping all other words in their tracks.

Epilogue

Midnight

New Mexico, United States

I was sitting in the dark motel room. It was late—very late. But I wasn’t tired. I rarely slept anymore. Not since my death.

My phone was in my hand, the focal point of my unyielding stare as I waited patiently for my master to call. I knew he would, because things hadn’t gone as planned. That was the only time he contacted me during a mission.

Usually, there was never any reason for him to call.

The black phone vibrated suddenly, but I wasn’t startled. I raised it smoothly to my ear, my voice deep.

“Master.”

“Far Darrig.”

“Is the situation under control?” The Demon Lord sighed expansively. “Romero has been dealt with. Selena is . . . properly upset.”

“What about the Seer?”

“There’s been a slight change of plans concerning her. She is more strong willed than I imagined a mere teenager to be.”

“I’m not Romero. I can handle her.”

“Of course you could. But I don’t want you to. I have something else in mind. I will have her—but she will come to me.”

“Very well. Shall I return?”

“No. Not yet. I have one more thing I need you to do for me.

It concerns her Guardians.”

I didn’t hesitate. “Anything.”

“Selena tells me that the Seer has a weak spot for one of her Guardians; one in particular. Patrick O’Donnell. He is your new target. Are we clear?”

My voice was neutral. “Yes.”

We talked for a few more minutes, arranging the final details.

A very small smile twisted my lips—an unfamiliar sensation.

When he ended the call, I closed my phone and stood. There was much to be done. But it was the work I enjoyed. What I did best.
