Chapter Thirty Six
Seeing him in tattoo form
Adam Attenborough was at the hospital. He was quite ill. Joshua Toft went to the hospital. Adam was at a dark, gloomy ward with three policemen. Adam was lying in deep unconsciousness.
“Do you recognize this man?” asked one of the policemen.
“Yes,” Joshua Toft replied, putting on a fake upset face as he gazed at Adam’s tattoos. “He’s my best friend. God bless him, he’s wrote my phone number on his body!”
He was lying through and through, but was enjoying it.
“Can you tell us about him?”
“He’s Adam Attenborough. Oh, we’re properly good mates. He suffers from a short term memory loss lasting fifteen minutes before he loses his memory again. I really am quite devastated seeing him in this state. But he’s a strong man. Very muscley, very firm,” Joshua confided.
“Right,” the policemen nodded. “If you want to examine him with us keeping guard on you?”
“No, that won’t be necessary,” said Joshua Toft immediately. If the policemen witnessed what he was about to do now he would never see the outside of a prison cell.
The last thing he wanted was killing Adam in front of the policemen and then staying behind bars for the rest of his life. He just had to find the right moment, and that wouldn’t be today.
“Very well,” one other policeman nodded. “You can go now.”
“With pleasure,” nodded Joshua Toft, and left the hospital, gathering up his thoughts.
Chapter Thirty Seven
The poison that cleared all evidence
Adam Attenborough was being escorted with some nurses into a new ward. Joshua and his fellow criminal friends went to the hospital. They scared the nurses away from them and Adam.
They injected a very weak poison into Adam, (he was still unconscious) to get rid of all of his tattoos. As this poison wasn’t strong, it didn’t kill Adam, but all the tattoo prints on his body would slowly disappear after a week’s worth of sleeps.
“All in a day’s work,” Joshua grinned, and gave his partners a hi-five.
“Now, there’s no evidence that we committed the murder,” agreed one of them.
But the murder of whom, you are about to find out.
Chapter Thirty Eight
Breaking in without permission
Joshua went out to the pub with his friends, for a very long time, getting blind drunk. Adam used this opportunity to go to Joshua’s house.
One very big window was unlocked and wide open. Adam clambered inside.
Joshua’s phone began to ring. After wandering around the house, Adam answered it.
Chapter Thirty Nine
The phone call that made him furious
Jazz was at the other end. She thought Joshua Toft had answered the phone.
“Hi Joshua. I just wanted to ask you a small favour. One of my photos got left with Adam.” Jazz rushed straight to the purpose of her phone call.
“Which Adam?” asked Adam.
“Adam Attenborough,” Sophie reminded him, thinking he was stupid. “I was just wondering if you could make sure I receive it? Because he’ll probably kill me any day now.” Adam could hear Jazz gulp at the other end of the receiver.
“What were you wearing in the photo?” Adam asked.
“Erm, blue top and blue jeans,” Jazz said.
“OK, you’ll receive it by tomorrow.” Adam confirmed.
“Thanks, sir. I really am very grateful. I really hate that Adam Attenborough.”
Adam gasped at what she’d just said. He paused for a moment, thinking what Joshua would have said.
“I hate him too,” Adam replied.
Jazz dialled off without saying goodbye.
Adam put his head in his hands. He felt truly betrayed that Jazz had used him all this time. She acted like she was his friend, but secretly she thought Adam was her worst enemy.
What did I do wrong to her to deserve this?
Adam thought.
Chapter Forty
Reading the diaries
Jazz was at Amber’s house with both Gina and Amber. They were having a girls night in, but they certainly didn’t feel like doing anything tonight. The thing they really wanted to do, was look over the evidence about Adam Attenborough that Jazz had collected from his apartment. Even Gina was starting to get interested in the case.
Jazz fumbled in her bag, and took out Adam’s diaries.
“We’ll read Adam’s diaries. Maybe they could help us on our project,” Jazz suggested.
First they read the 2005 diary, the one that the policeman had read. They looked shocked at the photo of Adam on the front, because he was so handsome back then. They laughed and cried at some parts. They really enjoyed reading his point of view on his life.
Then they finished it.
“Let’s read more!” Gina said eagerly. “Have you got the 2006 diary?”
“Yup,” Amber smiled, as Jazz took the 2006 diary from her bag.
They began to read.
Part Three – Flashback
When I first met you
I felt like I had known you forever,
telling you my secrets
and what I didn’t want ever.
you listened to me
I bet you thought I’d never end,
who would have thought
we would become more than just friends.
Over a period of time,
I got to know the real you.
A boy so caring and gentle,
with a heart so true.
You’ve survived your life
with hurt and loneliness by your side.
I told you I’d never leave
because of the feelings I have inside.
I know you
like no one I have ever known,
and sometimes I wonder
what I’d do if you were gone?
So I have decided
time answers all.
If it is meant to be
time will remove the wall.
I love the way we are together,
you can always make me smile.
Will it ever really be forever?
I guess I will have to wait awhile.
Time will reveal, what lies ahead
but always remember
what I have said.
Meeting you has changed my life
and I really love you so,
the feelings I feel for you
I am never letting go.
Remember me always
and I will too.
I always think of
me and you.
Chapter Forty One
Sweet nothings on a train
Sophie Steele was on the train, to go to another city. She was writing a love letter to Adam:
If only I could have come up with the right words to describe the depth of this beautiful feeling that I have for you, I would have uttered them to you the first time I laid eyes on you. But I lacked that knowledge, so the best thing that I can do is to show you how I really mean it now. I love you so dearly. Did you know that? You are the best thing that has ever happened to me. You are like the best poetry ever composed, the best song ever played, the best picture ever painted. I never thought or expected that someone like me could get so lucky as to find you. How could I have known the comfort and security that comes whenever I say "I love you," and you say the same words, too?
I know that you love me, or you wouldn't be prepared to marry me. Marrying me will be just among the many wonderful things you have done to show me that you are sincere and how much I mean to you. I love you more than life itself--more than my world. You are my world. Life wouldn't be life if I didn't share it with you. We may be far away from each other right now, but my heart and my love can reach across any distance, and I feel your love reaching me here, too. It just feels so wonderful knowing and believing that. Aren't we lucky? I love you--more and more each day.
When my sky turns gray, and the thunder starts to roll, and it seems as if tomorrow will never come, I turn to you. The look in your eyes, the touch of your hands, the sound of your voice--it's all I need to brighten my day and blow the rainy clouds away. You are my angel from above, sent to me. Why? I do not know, but what I do know is that I don't deserve it. When I look into your eyes and feel your gentle touch, it sends chills up my spine, sending me into an ecstasy beyond explanation.
Babe, you drive me wild! Just the way you look in my eyes sends my head spinning and the stars start to shine. The sound of your voice starts my heart pumping so, Babe, you can only imagine what it's like when you wrap your arms around me and I feel your warm breath on my cheek. You make my body shiver in bliss, my breath is taken away, I see the stars, Babe, and it's all because of you. It's amazing how you knock me off my feet; every time you come around me, I get weak.
Dream maker, make my dreams come true tonight! If I close my eyes, will you hold me tight all night? Will you be here by my side when my nights are cold and lonely? Will you give me your love that I crave so deeply? I cannot imagine my life without you now. You are everything inside me that I wish I could be and so much more. I look at my life before I knew your love, and I don't know how I ever survived.
This part of the letter was just a fraction of the long and beautiful letter that she wrote. Now that she was done, she folded the paper up and put it into her handbag, and then gave Adam a call.
“Hey Mitchell,” she grinned, as she spoke into the phone.
“Hi,” Adam said at the other end.
“Is your mum better?” Sophie asked, concerned.
“Yes, thanks to your money. I can’t tell you how thankful I am.” Adam still felt guilty because he hadn’t gone to see his mother.
“Hey, no problem. We’ll get the embassy cars some time or another,” Sophie reassured.
“At least my mum’s well now.” Adam felt uncomfortable and wanted to change the subject.
“I’m so happy for you. Have you told her about me?” Sophie was smiling.
“Yeah, she’s so delighted.” Adam was grinning.
“Cool.” This word was the only one that Sophie could manage.
“So, what did you want to talk about?” Adam asked, quickly trying to start a new conversation.
“Just this and that,” Sophie said vaguely. “I’m on the train to London, because that’s where you’ll be arriving, isn’t it?”
“Yeah. And then maybe we could celebrate our reunion?” Adam grinned.
“You’re so soppy!” Sophie laughed.
“Hey, who’re you calling soppy? You’re the soppy one.” Adam laughed too.
“OK, OK, you can shut up now.”
“Sorry. Am I wasting your time?”
“Nah, I’m thankful. This train journey’s a proper nightmare, being alone with nothing to do. I’ve still got a good stinking four hours left.” Sophie sighed.
“Man, I feel bad for you. So, what’re you gonna do when you get there? I’m only just about to get on the plane.”
“Probably go down town with Besside. Or go and have a girly chinwag with Sandalwood.”
“Right. Well, I have to go now, or I’ll get done for talking on my mobile phone.” Adam paused. “Even though I’m the boss. Goddamit, them guys never stop ranting at me.”
“Ha ha! OK, bye, Mitchell. Love you!”
“And you!”
Sophie laughed as she dialled off. Then she could hear sudden crying. Underneath one of the seats, a little girl was sobbing as quietly as she could.
“Hey, what’s wrong?” asked Sophie, concerned.
The girl didn’t reply.
“Come on, come out, I won’t hurt you!” Sophie said softly.
The girl stayed where she was.
“Come on. I promise I won’t do you any harm. You can tell me what’s the matter.”
Slowly, the girl came out of her hiding place.
Sophie hugged her.
“Now, tell me, what’s your name?”
“Chloe,” the girl whispered.
“That’s a beautiful name! Well, Chloe, what’s wrong?”
“Everything,” she wept. “There are some men on the train, trying to look for me, and they’re planning to kill me!”
“Oh, I won’t let anything whatsoever happen to you, even if I have to die instead. I’ll keep you safe, I promise.”
