Peter lay back at one end of the sofa in the living-room, staring at the ceiling.

‘Does that mean you've just been promised a job for life?' Belinda asked warily.

Peter smoothed back the hair from his forehead. For a long time he just stared at nothing.

‘I don't really know,' he answered eventually.
