Strollers & Stilettos: A Sexy Contemporary Romance (In Stilettos Book 4) (15 page)

In a hushed tone, he said, “I’m sorry for that. We didn’t know there was anyone to look for. They only found out about me when I went looking for them. I understand how abandoned you felt.”

“You don’t know me. I can tell you’re trying to trick me. Give me my baby!”

Jaya’s held her breath. Her blood raced, and her heart thudded when, finally, Caleb and one of his men came into sight. For big men, they moved swiftly. Melanie seemed not to notice Caleb right behind her until he had a gun up against the back of her neck.

His growl was low. “Since you’re Alec’s family and all, I’d rather not hurt you, but it’s time to stop playing show and tell.”

Jaya worried Melanie would resist, especially as her eyes narrowed. But then Melanie glanced between Alec and Jaya and Caleb, and her body sagged.

Once Caleb and his team had Melanie subdued, Alec turned and clutched Jaya to him. “Are you okay?” He searched her face and checked Alexa over, tenderly soothing a finger over her dimpled cheek.

Jaya nodded. “Yeah, we’re okay. You?”

He slid a glance over at his sister, who fought the restraints. “I will be. But right now, I just need to hold you.”

Epilogue

Somewhere in the distance, the sound of a crying baby woke Jaya out of a sound stupor. With a moan, she flopped over in bed and dropped her arm onto Alec’s side of the bed. Maybe if she tried hard enough she could convince him it was his turn to get the baby. But maybe it really was his turn. She was so tired she didn’t know.

“Baby?” she mumbled.

“Shhh. I got her.” His voice came from near the door.

She turned to see what he was doing and realized he had his hands full. He held Alexa in his arms, who staked a claim on one of his shoulders and nuzzled into the crook of his neck.

Jaya moaned sleepily. “Oh, thank God. I thought I was going to have to get out of bed.”

His low, rumbling chuckle warmed her insides. “Yes, well, I couldn’t remember whose turn it was, and I know you need the rest, so I went and got her.”

She reached out, running her hands through Alexa’s dark, silken hair.

Alec climbed in beside Jaya and held Alexa to his chest. She’d already grown so much. She looked more like a little girl than a baby now. Given that she was running around tearing up the house these days, that was about right.

Alec put her between them and kissed Jaya’s forehead. “Did you think this would be us?”

Jaya laughed. “Well, yes, eventually, but not like this.” She stroked a finger down Alexa’s cheek. “But no matter how we got here, it’s pretty awesome.”

He nodded. “It’s all so crazy.”

“What did the lawyer say when he called tonight?” Even though Melanie had tried to extort money from them and had abandoned Alexa on their doorstep, then tried to take her back by force, Alec had insisted on paying for her legal bills.

“They’re aiming to get her into a psychiatric facility as opposed to jail. Given her mental state.”

Jaya shook her head. “I can’t even imagine being her.”

“She’s really messed up.” He shrugged. “But she’s my sister. And Alexa’s mom.”

She and Alec had already worked out a deal for them to take over guardianship of Alexa with supervised visitation for Melanie when Alexa was older. “Family is important.”

Alec shifted his gaze to Jaya, and then slipped a hand over her gently rounding belly. “Family is everything.” His eyes flared. “Do you feel that?”

She laughed. “Feel what?”

Alec dragged his hand down her stomach. Right under his fingertips, they felt the steady thrum of a heartbeat.

“Wow,” she whispered.

Alec shifted his hands, and his face went pale. “Um, Jai?”

“What’s wrong with you? It’s only a heartbeat. From what I’ve heard, babies are supposed to have them.”

He shook his head. “But are they supposed to have two?”

She shifted her hands to cover his and felt anther steady thrumming. Oh, God.
Twins
?

Alec laughed and kissed her forehead. “I guess we’re going to need a bigger stroller.”

“Holy cow. Looks like those stilettos more than did their job.”

Alec kissed her forehead. “I’ll say.”

“Probably a good idea to hand them off to Ricca or Micha for a while.”

Alec shook his head as a slow, sly grin, spread across his face. “Whatever for? I can still find a good use for them.”

She laughed. “You’re incorrigible.”

“What can I say? My wife is sexy as hell in those stilettos.”
