“She’s determined to find you Mr. Right. She’ll be more careful next time. Plan a little better and consult the stars. But she’s not finished.”
Eyes wide with horror, Anja shook her head at her grandmother.
Odette nodded right back.
Anja’s gaze swung to the doors leading out to the café. She wanted to protest, to explain—or yell—that she didn’t want her mother finding her a Mr. Right. She didn’t even want her finding a Mr. Wrong.
But it wouldn’t do her any good. And while a little magic might have gotten her out of this hookup, it was only because she’d arranged the perfect love match for Paul. But luck wasn’t going to be sitting on her shoulder, making it so easy next time. She was going to be up against a very wily, extremely determined woman. One with her own magic. So she’d better get prepared.
The romantic idea of finding true love and having a happy ever after might be okay for some women, Anja had learned the hard way that it wasn’t for her. So come hell or high water, there was no way on earth she was letting her mother corner her into a relationship.
Because she didn’t need a tarot reading to see there was no love in her future. Not without sacrificing who she was, what she was.
Anja lifted one glossy apple from the bowl on the counter and gazed intently at the red skin before taking a bite. Juice exploded in her mouth as she vowed to use every bit of magic at her disposal to counter her mother’s next move.
Life was made up of choices.
And Anja chose magic.
