Little more than a year ago, I had never given much thought to capital punishment. Writing this book forced me to gather the facts, to weigh various opinions, and to acknowledge the deeply held beliefs on both sides. I have learned that no argument can erase the pain of the survivors of crime, and that police, prosecutors, and courts do the best they can with limited resources. Like any product of human invention, the system is fallible. Rules of procedure do not always correct its mistakes. Ultimately, however, this is a moral and religious issue, not a factual one. I now find myself among those who believe that capital punishment is primitive, arbitrary, and unnecessary.
Information about the death penalty is widely available in book form and on the Internet. For a copy of my reading list, check my Web site,
