And then, sitting on top of the roof, Behrens pounded in the final nail in the
frame of the still-unshingled roof and addressed the attendees in a loud,
American-accented German: "
Es möge Gott dieses Haus und die Bewohner
vor Unheil zu schützen."

Hugh clapped and cheered with the rest, but he looked askance at Siegfried
when the noise died down. "So, what did he say?"

Siegfried grinned, grabbed Alice around the waist and kissed her in front of
everybody. "And if it pleases God, protect this house and its inhabitants from all
misfortune."

"Amen!" said Alice, and kissed him back.
