Taken by the Alien Lord

Chapter One

Fairy tales can come to life. Happily ever after does exist. Ever since I was a little girl, I wanted my share of happily ever after. I knew my prince charming would arrive soon, riding a white horse. The man of my dreams would come and take me away from all the materialistic things of this world. I have imagined this day ever since I attended my aunt’s marriage and was one of the prettiest flower girls in the history of weddings.

I grew old, turned eighteen, finished college, got a degree, turned twenty, switched job, started saving, turned twenty six, got my share of bad dates, got stood up numerous times, which made me turn more mature and practical. But then, I met him. My prince charming who gave me a taste of happily ever after with his first kiss.

It was a beautiful day. I was wearing my mother’s wedding gown and walked gracefully towards the altar, where my prince was waiting for me. I could hear the wedding bells and the piano. I could see people watching me and adoring my beauty. I was looking beautiful and pretty, my skin was radiant and the dress complimented my curves.

That. Right there – was my happily ever after.

“Rebecca! Rebecca!” I heard someone calling my name from behind. The screams sounded furious. I couldn’t take the rage and turned away, only to find out it was darkness all around me.

“Rebecca! I need those merger reports by the end of the day!” the voice was loud and clear.

“Yes, sir!” I said. It was more of an auto response. I quickly opened my eyes and came back to my senses. I looked around and saw a bundle of unwanted files in front of me, the wooden desk, and the workstation. It wasn’t the happily ever after that I thought.

I brought my senses back from my reverie and gave up the idea of my dreams. “Wake up Rebecca! Dreams are not meant to be taken so seriously!” My manager said and stepped out from my desk to his cabin. I smiled at myself by the thought of my marriage. It was not the right time or place. I wasn’t living my dreams anymore.

My happily ever after was yet to come.

Chapter Two

“So tell me something more about you? What are your dreams and aspirations?” I was asked by a man whom I met a couple of minutes back. I was sitting in a casual street café where he decided to take me. It was an offbeat choice for a first date, but I liked the idea of it.

“My hopes and aspirations! Well, that’s a tough one. I guess right now, I would like to have some consistency with my job and maybe become an assistant manager in a few years. I am a senior executive now and I am waiting for an in-house promotion now. I have worked really hard for it!” I said, trying to boast about my hard work and dedication.

“No, I mean about your life – your personal life,” he corrected and that left me staring his face for the next five minutes, until he realized that the awkward silence would kill our first date and changed the topic. In those five minutes, I thought about a lot of things, but nothing really passed my mind. I had dreams – high dreams of getting married or of finding the right man for me, with whom I could spend the rest of my life. But those were my dreams.

I had no companion with whom I could share my hopes or aspirations. I had nobody. I was a lone wolf.

I came back home and my empty bed welcomed me, mocking me at times when I passed out on the couch while watching television. There was nothing else to do, nothing to look forward to.

I woke up the next day and found my cell phone dead. It didn’t take me very long to realize that my alarm didn’t work in the morning and I was running late. I quickly got ready and wore almost anything that first came out of my closet, got a cab and ran to work.

I was more than two hours late, something which I have never done before. I have always been a very punctual and dedicated employee. It didn’t really matter to anyone that I was late. No one reacted and I started working like nothing happened.

It was past lunch when I was called by my manager. I thought that he would be angry at me, as I was late and didn’t inform him anything before.

“Hey! I am going to keep it short, as I am running late for a business meeting, but you have been relieved from my service,” he said and for a moment I couldn’t believe. I have always been a very dedicated employee. He could not fire me just like that, without giving any reason. I was about to question him when he realized the wrong choices of his words.

“I am sorry that came out wrong. It means that you have been promoted. We are on equal levels now and you have to assist the CEO of the company for an upcoming project. Go meet him now, he must be waiting for you!” he said and stormed out. A part of me knew that the promotion was coming, but I didn’t know that it would be so soon and that I would be asked to report to the CEO of the company himself.

“Wow!” I said and smiled at the thought of Nathan Carter.

Nathan Carter, the name was enough – CEO of one of the leading tech giants of the continent, he was included in the list of most intellectual and risk taking CEOs in the world. I never got a chance to see him up close, forget about the idea of talking to him! I only saw him a couple of times in all-hands meetings, where all the employees would be asked to assemble at the big auditorium for a big announcement. I would see him from a distance and appreciate his words, but never got a chance to work with him. It was a dream coming true.

It was my moment. I quickly ran to the washroom and applied some make-up. I didn’t have a very pretty face, but the late night hangover made it look even worse. My hair was all messed up and I took some fifteen minutes to arrange them properly. After I realized that it was already noon, I quickly ran towards the elevator and pressed the “up” button.

As the elevator was opened, I saw Nathan walking out of it. He didn’t notice my presence or passed me a smile. He looked cold and devoid of any human sentiments and walked away. I realized that I was late and should confront him.

“Nathan!” I said while pacing towards him. I had to walk faster than my usual pace in order to match his speed. He was wearing a navy blazer and his eyes looked mysterious ocean blue. He turned around and looked at me. He had no idea about me.

“I am Rebecca Stone. I was supposed to report you for an upcoming project,” I said in order to explain my intentions of stopping him unexpectedly like that.

“I guess you were supposed to meet me two hours ago,” he said bluntly looking at my face, making me judge my own intentions.

“I am sorry, I was late.”

“Well don’t be from yesterday. I have big plans for you.” He said and walked away. The Jaguar was already waiting him and he drove it himself. Before I could process what happened, he was already gone.

I breathed a sigh of relief and walked towards my workstation. I knew that it was not a good first impression and that I had to pull up my socks from the next day. I couldn’t let that opportunity go.

Chapter Three

I was fifteen minutes early at work the next day. I settled down and opened my emails. There was no intimation or message from Nathan or his assistant. I decided to visit him office once to just check if he was still there or not. To my surprise, the gate of his room was open. I dared enough to walk towards it and knocked the wooden door. He was already there, working on his laptop.

“Please sit, Miss Rebecca Stone!” he said without looking at me. His eyes were fixed at this laptop screen. I took a couple of steps and sat on the beige colored chair placed in front of his desk. The place had a very strange and strong essence and I couldn’t quite figure out what it was like. Yes, it was mysterious but pleasant at the same time. I believe it was him.

I looked at him – his dark brown hair, a perfectly chiselled face that had no scars, no marks; it was too flawless to be real. He was wearing a chocolate brown tuxedo and beige colored shirt with a matching tie. I could see his gold and stone studded cufflinks and a Rolex that imparted an effortless stylish appeal to his ensembles. He didn’t have to say anything. His attire was too perfect to narrate his story – strong, rich and fearless.

“You have been hand-picked from a lot of hundreds of employees. They said that you are one of the best in our company. Do you agree?” he looked at me with his ocean blue eyes that looked very different that day. They were lighter, more mild and magical.

“I am, sir,” I said after giving a quick thought. I didn’t want to sound narcissist, but couldn’t underestimate my skills as well.

“Don’t call me sir – just Nathan,” he said and I nodded in approval.

“You have to work with me 24 hours a day. You have been given a 100% hike on your salary, which means that you have been given a very important work of our company. It is highly confidential and no one can know a thing about it – not even your husband or boyfriend,” he said. “I don’t have any husband or boyfriend,” I interrupted him in between and regretted those words the moment they came out of my mouth. He was least interested to know about my personal life and ignored that statement completely.

“Since the work is very crucial and you have to work with me all the time, you have to directly report to me – no assistant or middle person in between. You have to sit adjacent to my office, so that I can call you whenever needed. You have to be on time – you can never get late. Your work has to be your top-most priority. I can call you in the middle of the night to assign new work. You can never crib, never say no, never do anything that is not told to you!” he kept of narrating all the things that I should do and should not do, while I couldn’t stop staring at his luscious lips that looked like red cherries. They were light and dark, both at the same time and were crafted to perfection.

“Do you understand Rebecca?” he asked me one more time.

“Yes, I do. I do. Thank you for the opportunity,” I said and came out of my reverie. A part of me was lost in Nathan.

“Okay, you may leave now. I will provide you all the information soon.” He said and I got up to leave the office. He didn’t look back and started working on his laptop again, in a very strange and mechanical manner. I looked back and gave him one last satisfying look. I wanted to capture that moment, that office, that essence in my brain. I didn’t want to let go. I didn’t want to leave the room, but I did - only to return soon.

I was allocated to sit just outside Nathan’s cabin and was given all the attention. Everyone in the office wanted to know about me and what my work was like. I didn’t let them know a thing, as the work was extremely confidential, but I was fascinated by the attention. It was the first time in my life when I was given that much attention, and I won’t lie, I didn’t know how to react.

We were working on some strange source of energy and its extraction. I had to work closely with the research time, getting them approvals and making their work seamless. The energy source was considered so divine and mysterious that it was out of this world. I was happy with the work, but it would get too overwhelming sometime. I was working harder than before and was expecting some kind of appreciating from Nathan, who was cold as ice.

Every morning he would assign me different work, expecting me to get back to him as soon as I could. When the world would be done, he won’t acknowledge or appreciate my efforts. He won’t even say a “Thank you!”

He would just nod, which was his polite way of saying that I could leave.

It was just like any other day when Nathan called me up. I just got back home from a hectic day at work and it was already past nine. I answered the call reluctantly.

“Rebecca, I need a favor,” I heard Nathan’s voice on the other side.

“Yes, Nathan.”

“I have to go to a business meeting tonight – well, it is more of a fundraiser. But I need to go there, as I am supposed to meet a few important people. I am looking at the invitation, and it says that I have to bring a lady with me,” he said and I knew why he called me.

“Text me the address and the place – I will be there!” I said. I knew it was not a romantic gesture. Over the time, I realized that emotions and feelings had no place in Nathan’s heart. They were completely insignificant for me. He called me for a business meeting and that was it. I reminded myself of it over and over again, so that my feeble heart won’t expect something romantic.

“Actually I am standing outside your building,” he paused after that sentence. He didn’t want to come as a stalker, but he did. I looked at him from my window and could spot his Jaguar parked outside my apartment building.

“Just give me five minutes!” I said and rushed to the washroom. I had no idea that I could get ready in a matter of few minutes before that day. I washed my hair, put on my best long black dress, a perfect pair of stilettos, and was ready to accompany him for the fundraiser.

“Let’s go!” I said after sitting with him in his Jaguar. He was impressed by my professionalism and passed a smile. That was the first time in my life when I saw him smiling. I knew it was going to be a great night.
