Jon didn't stop until he reached the back door to his gallery. Another man stepped out of the shadows to enter the building with him.

Donna thought about sneaking in, but figured Fred would show up soon. He did, whistling while he walked. He glanced around before he too entered the building.

Her plans would be foiled if Jon had relocked the door, but he hadn't. She slipped into the back of the gallery on quiet feet.

She didn't have to move far from the door to hear the men. Her proximity to the door would make for an easy escape.

"I can't believe you told her Fred."

"How was I supposed to know you hadn't shared this plan with her? I don't know how you got her to break into that place."

"I told her there were animals to be rescued. Who can turn down a puppy?"

A chill went through Donna. She'd really been played for a fool. How could she be so stupid?

"Doesn't matter. The plan is on as we've plotted," Jon said.

"Maybe we should do it sooner," Fred said. "We can all be out town anyway."

"Are you afraid Donna's going to give us up?"

"Yes I am, Jon. How much can we trust her? She's a common thief."

"A thief who stole a virus. She has way too much to lose by giving us up."

A pain stabbed her heart. Jon didn't really love her and she'd fallen into his trap. She had no place to live. Her job would be in jeopardy. Her whole life would be over. She'd be exposed as a thief.

Her eyes dropped closed for a moment.

"Let's move up the timetable," Fred said. "Let's do it in two days."

"No reason to wait. I can have a business trip out of town. I've been meaning to meet with someone anyway. Donna would never suspect."

"You'll leave her here to get infected?" Fred said.

"No reason, not to. She knows the plot, but she is of no use to us now."

Donna swallowed a gasp. She'd never suspected that Jon was so cold-hearted. She had to do something to stop him.

She left by the back door, sure that they had no idea she'd been there. She wandered the streets for a few hours. She couldn't go back home. Not ever again.

Right as the dawn was breaking, she settled on a bench outside the FBI office. She knew what she had to do.

But she had a call
to make before then.

Her
call was to Kelly. "I won't be in today. There's been an emergency."

"No problem, I can hold down the fort."

Donna hesitated. She looked up at the sky that was beginning to lighten. "Just remember, that you've been a great friend to me."

"That's too cryptic. What's going on?"

"I can't say. Bye, Kelly."

Donna felt as if she'd never see her friend again. The bread trucks were on the road delivering to restaurants and coffee shops. A long jogger past her with ear
buds in. The city roused from its slumber.

The walk across the street seemed to take a year. Maybe because she was dragging her feet. This was the end.

She opened the door and entered. The man behind the front desk at the FBI office greeted her.

"What can I do for you?"

"I'd like to report a crime."

The End.
