“I told you it was all a wasteland.” Eylean squeezed his shoulder sympathetically. Then she looked around nervously. “We have to go, if we don’t want them to trace the spaceship.” Since he did not move, she nudged him gently. “Come on, Rydan. We better leave before they try to stop us.”

He kept his stance. His gaze shifted to his feet again. The tiny plant was still there, almost proud in its loneliness.

“What is it, Rydan?” she inquired, seeing his rigid position. “Don’t you want to come away with me anymore? Do you want to stay here and die like Kyraen?”

He did not even look at her, his gaze steadily fixed on the ground.

“Please,” she begged, “don’t let me go alone.”

“I wouldn’t be afraid if I were you,” he assured. “You certainly know how to work your way into people’s trust. Any trouble surviving or…” he stopped, a phrase popping in his mind, though he had no idea what it meant, “finding another slave for sex.”

“Rydan,” she grabbed his shoulders, “darling, didn’t we agree to do this together? Don’t you see how they lied to you? Would you rather believe them over me?” Her voice broke. “Don’t you trust me anymore?”

Temptation to touch the tiny miraculous plant was irresistible, but Rydan resisted. On one thing, Eylean had been right. They had told him too many lies. But not all was lost.

Sending one last look at the tiny plant, he took Eylean’s hand. “No, I don’t know what to trust anymore, but I’ll come with you anyway.”

With a sigh of relief, Eylean squeezed his hand and followed him inside the spaceship.
