The Bomb and the Cage: Doree Anne (21 page)

We entered through the door on the left first. Inside was a small office. There was a desk in the right corner that had a very large stack of papers on it and a bible that was open with a pencil on top. On the left, there were two doors both of which were open - one was a bathroom that had just a toilet and sink. The other door was a closet that had several white robes hanging in it. There wasn’t any food here so we left to go check the other door.

This door led to a room that was much bigger than the office. It was a dining hall that probably held twenty people. There were two large tables and metal folding chairs along the wall on the left. At the far end was an open kitchen. To the left of the kitchen were the two bathrooms. Women’s on the left, men’s on the right. We walked into the kitchen and when we opened up the large refrigerator, a wonderfully stocked fridge greeted us. There were all sorts of juice and eggs inside. When we opened the freezer, we found what must have been twenty pounds of ground sausage.

“Wow, that’s a lot of sausage.” Gus said, looking at the large supply.

“Bush will love it here.” I said smiling. “We better go get the others. Let them know it’s clear inside.” Gus nodded and we left the church.

As soon as we stepped outside there was a loud thundering sound of what must have been a jet, or jets. Then a loud explosion followed.

“Well it looks like the military is stepping in and cleaning this mess up!” Fender yelled. “We need to get inside the church. If they are bombing the place then this is where you want to be. The military wont bomb churches, schools, or hosp…” Fender stopped talking mid-sentence and stared in the direction of the explosion. “Oh my God!”

Through the trees their large mushroom cloud peeking.

“We need to get inside now! We need to seal up every window and door!” Mendez started yelling. We all moved quickly grabbing our supplies and carrying them inside. I grabbed Amanda who was still in shock. She didn’t seem to have any idea what was going on around us. I sat her down on one of the pews, and then joined the rest of the group as they rushed to get the rest of our supplies.

Things were getting worse. I couldn’t help wonder how we were going to survive. Fender was the last one to enter the church. He pulled the doors shut and locked them. He handed me a roll of duct tape and I started to seal the door shut with him. As if it wasn’t bad enough with the
Biters,
now we had the military dropping nukes on us. What if the nukes didn’t kill them? What if it just made them more dangerous? We didn’t know then, but things had gotten a lot worse. In fact dropping that bomb was what sealed our fate. It was what doomed us.
