The Boyfriend Experience (3 page)

“I had a wonderful time,” she said, walking
him to the door.

“Always a pleasure.”

He kissed her cheek and squeezed her one
more time, inhaling the smell of her before walking out into the
stark hallway. The latch of the door clicked behind him.

He stood in the empty hallway, the same gray
carpet, same modern wall sconces and geometric light. He walked a
few feet down the hall and pulled his wallet out of his inside
jacket pocket. He opened the billfold and pulled out a thin band of
white gold. He slid the ring back onto his finger.

He tapped his wallet on the table and
glanced at his watch.

He walked back to 7114 and raised his hand
to knock on the door. It opened before he could.

He looked at his wife, her hair up in a clip
now to hide its wild nature.

She burst out of the door and closed it
behind her, kissing him as she moved past. “Dear God, I had a great
night! How was yours?”

“Pretty fucking fantastic.”

She squeezed his hand and plowed past him
down the hallway, her hips swaying with each step in her high
heels. He followed.

“Sorry, but I’m starving! Where do you want
to get dinner?”

“Anywhere you like, baby. It’s your
birthday.”

They reached the elevator and she pressed
the call button several times. He took hold of her hand and pulled
her over, her own ring cool against his skin. He kissed her neck.
She smiled at him and pressed her nose to his before kissing him.
The chime of the elevator’s arrival drew her attention and she
released him, rushing into it.

He stayed in the hallway a moment, spinning
the ring on his hand. “So, I think I’m going to be busy on my
birthday this year.”

He looked up to find her smirking at him
from inside the elevator. The look was wicked.

“I can’t wait,” she said.

She stepped out of the elevator just enough
to reach him, took hold of his tie and pulled him inside. The chime
of the elevator doors echoed down the stark, empty hallway.
