The Lone Ranger and Tonto (19 page)

On the floor, just inside the door, there was a small pile of jewelry and on top of the pile was a necklace, the one that had been given to John Langford's wife by his mother many years ago. Langford picked it up with reverence. Lying near it, he saw another object which he took into his thin hands.

"Dave," he said, "take these home to your mother. She's been waiting a long time to see you. You take these, and I'll take the rest of her jewelry." Dave reached out his hand, and Langford dropped into it the necklace and a bullet, a bullet that gleamed like some of the jewelry—a bullet of solid silver.

From somewhere outside, there came a clatter of hoofs and a hearty ringing voice carried clearly to all the men inside. It still rang in their ears while they marched Higgy and carried Steve Delaney to the prison. "Hi-Yo, Silver! Away!"
