Dmytryk added during our interview, “Then they gave me the script of
The Young Lions
and I said, ‘There’s only one guy who can play Noah in this.’ I sent Monty the script and got back a telegram in two days. He said yes, and he never lost me a day on that picture. It was a long picture—I had Montgomery Clift and Marlon Brando in the same picture, and they’re both time losers. It was entirely my choice to cast Monty. We had a producer who had been an executive in the New York office. They retired him, and gave him a production deal. He died before the picture came out. He took no part in casting at all. When I took it, they had what I call a number two cast lined up for it—second rate people for all the major parts. I was the first one to get Monty, I got Dean Martin, who had never played in anything like that. He had to work with Clift a lot. I wanted Clift to be a happy man on this one, didn’t want any problems. I called him on the phone and said, ‘What about Dean Martin for this part?’ He said, ‘Dean Martin? Oh, no, no, no!’ [Martin had been doing slapstick with Jerry Lewis.] They had had Tony Randall for the part. I said, ‘The other choice is Tony Randall.’ I told him Tony was in a current picture with Ginger Rogers and Monty said, ‘I’ll go see him.’ He went to see it and called me the next day and said, ‘Get Dean Martin.’” Interviews: Ray Stricklyn, Millard Kaufman, Edward Dmytryk, Frank Taylor, Jack Larson, Jean Porter, Dorris Halsey.
