Our People, Our Stories, Our Canada
“One wonders whether Canadians will possess a common national memory a generation from now given that three-quarters of high school graduates were unable to give the date of Confederation â a ten percent point decline in ten short years.”
â Rudyard Griffiths, 2007,
The Dominion Institute
No matter how strong our regional roots are, it is our national identity that binds us together to form our common ground as Canadians. Leaders and Legacies is more than a book series â it is an opportunity to be part of a quiet, simple grassroots movement that aims to strengthen our national identity. It is a way to preserve and reinforce our common memory.
In reflection, the creation of Canada in 1867 was an improbability on many fronts, from its linguistic tensions to its small, disjointed population. On a vast scale it was not much more than a northern dream. And yet we Canadians, as diverse as we are, are connected by more than political will. Although we are unified through shared landscapes and political ties we are even more connected by our shared freedom to dream.
Leaders and Legacies aims to help children connect with leadership themes through the excitement of historical adventures.
