The Shadow of Mudflap (A Foxtrot Team Novel #1) (20 page)

“I have a proposition for you,” Daniel said. “We were very impressed with your work on the Texas Tech terrorist threat. As a result, I’ve been instructed to offer you a job with LiFT. How would you like to become one of my agents?”

“Seriously?” Mudflap swung his gaze between Daniel and Shanae. He loved his job with the fire department, but there was so much more he could do with LiFT, both on the paramedic side of things and on the agency side. Plus, he’d be working with Shanae day in and day out. On the surface that sounded good, but then he considered when she’d been undercover with Riley and the jealousy that consumed him. Those kinds of situations might cause some complications.

“I think you surprised him. I’ve never seen him speechless before,” Shanae told Daniel.

“No, no.” He needed to immediately disabuse them of that notion. “My first reaction is hell yes, but I have some concerns.” He turned to Shanae with a quick glance at Daniel. “What about our relationship? How would that work if we’re working a job together?”

Daniel interrupted, “Believe me, I’ve gone over this. I wouldn’t offer you the job if I thought that would be an issue. You’ve already proven you can work very well together, but we are in the midst of shuffling the teams a bit and you two will be on separate teams. The only person you know from your new team, if you choose to join us, would be Michael Turner.”

Mudflap tilted his head. “Michael, the firefighter?”

“Yes, he’s one of ours. He was at the fire station undercover. In fact, if you accept this job, you two will be heading out very shortly for your first undercover job.”

Excitement buzzed as the possibilities bombarded him, but his life wasn’t just about him anymore. Mudflap turned to Shanae again. “Are you okay with this? Is it okay for us to work at the same place?”

Her eyes softened as she gave him a sweet kiss. “I’m excited about the prospect. I love you and spending more hours a day with you sounds like heaven.”

Tingling spread through his limbs like an adrenaline rush. Not only had she said she loved him aloud, but she’d done so in front of her boss. Mudflap felt ready to take on the world right now.

He gave her a quick kiss on the forehead, before turning back to Daniel. “Well, then I guess you need to hook me up with Michael, because I’m in.”

Shanae

It was three days before Christmas and they were finishing up a visit with Grant at his house. He’d finally gotten to come home the week before. He still had a lot of physical therapy because the long-term coma had done so much damage to his muscles, but the therapists were already impressed with his progress. He had a really strong will.

Tonight, they were returning the records from his father. LiFT had examined each new piece of evidence and agreed with Grant’s assertion that his father had been murdered. It was amazing what the untrained man had been able to uncover about the highly secretive ALT. Grant had no idea about all this though. In fact, he wasn’t to know that the files had been out of Mudflap’s hands at all. As far as he knew, Mudflap was just returning the files to him so that he could continue his research while he convalesced. In secret, LiFT would continue to monitor and guard Grant’s safety as best they could without him ever knowing.

From his father’s notes, they were able to figure out a lot of the details about the attacks at Tech that hadn’t been clear before. It appeared ALT always used a five, three, one plan of attack.

Five men were responsible for different parts of the attack. Those were the phone numbers they’d found in the coins. The third coin did reveal a different set of four numbers. Again, they matched up with some of the numbers from the other two coins. All together there were five different numbers, so five different people responsible.

The basis for the attack had been three-pronged, the three coins which sent out the information for the main attack.

The one attack, which had been the sole focus of ALT all along. In this instance, once again, ALT used another organization, the Aggie Militia, to distract and work as their pawn in the overall mission. And once again, they were successful. LiFT knew without a doubt that ALT was involved with the overall plan, but all the evidence they could find pointed to one organization— the Aggie Militia.

Riley and his crew were singing about every facet of the Texas Tech attacks, trying to work deals, but they didn’t know anything about the TOW missile and its target. One of Riley’s lieutenants spoke of a single interaction with the Magistrate and that was the only definitive tie they’d been able to make between the Aggie Militia and ALT. It was frustrating and frightening to know that group was still out there, plotting and planning their next attack.

As they headed toward the door, Grant walked slowly with them. “Thank you so much for bringing these by, Mudflap. I need to see what else I can dig up on this. The Magistrate deserves justice for what was done to him.”

Shanae and Mudflap both swung around in shock.

“What did you call him?” Mudflap asked.

Grant gave a soft chuckle, oblivious to the bomb he’d just dropped. “Growing up, he said he was the judge and jury of the family. Somewhere along the way, we all started calling him the Magistrate. It was just a fun nickname.”

Shanae and Mudflap exchanged a look. They needed to get this information to LiFT as soon as possible.

Halftime Texting

Shanae
: Go look in the garage.

Mudflap
: I thought you were in the shower.

Shanae
: I’m gonna be soon.

Mudflap
: So why am I going to the garage instead of the shower with you?

Shanae
: LOL, you’ll understand in a moment.

Mudflap
: O…kay. You know, I realize you grew up in a garage, but I’m not sure I can get into any kind of tool kink.

Shanae
: OMG, you seriously did not just go there, did you? What is it about men? Everything has to be about sex.

Mudflap
: Of course, sex is… Holy Shit! Is that a real vintage Shelby??

Shanae
: Yep, she’s my baby, but I’ll let you drive her after you come scrub my back.

Mudflap
: Darlin’, you really are perfect, aren’t you? I’ll be right there.

Author's Note

This book is a work of fiction. It is all written in fun. It is NOT meant to reflect upon Texas Tech University’s football program or any of the other universities listed within.

The authors simply love the Texas Tech Red Raiders and wanted to reflect that love in this book, BUT IT IS NOT REAL.

(Although we’d love it if they did win the National Championship!)

The Aggie Militia, Alliance to Liberate Texas, and Lubbock Foxtrot Teams are also creations from the authors’ imagination.

This is a work of fiction and should be looked at in that light.
