The Triarii is where I got my start. The Protocol was the first
novel I ever wrote, it based upon a conversation my late friend Paul Conway and
I had, where he told me about the crystal skulls he had seen on a documentary.
“When you decide to write a novel, you should write about that!”

I did.
Good advice from an old friend. It was accepted, a contract was signed, and
now, fourteen books later in this series, and eight more in spin-offs, I think
it is safe to say it was a good thing my friend had been flipping through the
channels that night.

The
Triarii also featured very prominently seven books later in The Venice Code,
Book #8, and now seven books later in this book, Book #15, and everything, I
think, is all wrapped up.

Or is
it?

Who
knows? This time there are no major loose ends left dangling, but there seems
to be a pattern there, so maybe Book #22 will have them returning. I literally
shrug as I type this. Who knows? They’re still out there, and maybe someday
I’ll want to revisit them and see what new nightmares they can put Jim and Laura
through.

Fun
fact: In the original novel, The Protocol, there is the escape tunnel used by
Laura to lead them to safety. Pulling up Google Maps while working on this
novel, I looked at Fleet Street and found, exactly where I needed it, the Bride
Lane described in this book. Then using Google Street View, I saw there was a
garage door exactly where I needed it, and lo and behold, there was a camera
under a balcony. The fun part? I had written the scene, not knowing this lane
existed, let alone that it had the garage door I needed or the camera placed
exactly as I had described.
