The Valachi Papers (34 page)

(The most recent is Pasquale Calabrese, a soldier in the Magaddino Family in Buffalo. Calabrese, who has been taken to another part of the country and lives with his wife and children under an assumed name, confirmed what Valachi had to say about the structure of a Cosa Nostra Family. His information has also led to the conviction of several members of the Magaddino Family and a disruption of many of its operations.)

As for why he talked, Valachi once wrote me:

Naturally if I could do my life over again, I would. Who would not? Now I am all alone in this world. As you know, I do not write to my wife and my son as they will have nothing to do with me and I don't blame them.

Vito Genovese is responsible for everything. The boys brought him all these stories about me and he believed them. But when he was scheming against me, I was scheming back. Anyway, he found out that he could not do on the inside what he did on the outside. All I did in Atlanta was try to protect myself.

I hope the American people will benefit by knowing what the mob is like. If I was killed in Atlanta, I would have died branded as a rat anyway without doing anything wrong. So what did I lose?
