Jack looke
d at his friend Chris and grinned. The night was dark and the yellow light of the streetlamps shone luminous on the rainy walls of the alleyway. The drunk girl they’d spotted was a few yards up, being sick by the sounds of it.
Jack looked at Chris and mouthed the words,
‘I want first go.’
Chris smiled widely and together they walked forward like two wolves approaching a dying animal. Jack could feel the heat rising within him – when this heat came he was no longer the Jack most people knew and liked. When this heat came someone else took over and he was powerless to resist. He gestured for Chris to block the other side of the alleyway and they approached the woman slowly. He glanced up at the rear-view mirror and saw in the reflection that the driver too had that glassed-over, deathly look. He knew he was in danger now. Before he had been thinking of only himself – now all he could think was some demon or angel or something worse had come to punish him. He muttered furious prayers under his lips,
apologizing and repenting and hoping madly that that would save him.
He swung the car-door open and ran out into the street. He screamed when he saw him – a one-eyed man stood in the alley, his black hair blowing in the wind, whistling a tune and staring at Jack with a smile on his lips.
‘Why are you smiling?’ he said. ‘Stop smiling! Why are you smiling?’
Then – breath on his neck and a woman’s voice.
‘Because you’re a rapist cunt and deserve to die.’
He was thrust onto the concrete and flipped over to his back. His head was screaming and his body was shaking with terror and rage. He tried to strike out but the woman grabbed his arms and pinned them like he was a child. He stopped struggling and stared up – and Abby stared back at him.
‘Abby!’ he cried. ‘Stop this madness!’
She laughed, and he saw that her teeth were jagged – he didn’t remember them looking like that. The one-eyed man walked over and looked down at him, and smiled at Abby.
‘I think it’s fitting that he’s your first kill,’ she said.
‘
Me too,’ she said.
The last thing Jack saw was the one-eyed man’s eye – it was still and blue.
