“Oh, nothing, dear.”

He put his hand down on her pussy. She thought it was strange. He almost never initiated sex with her.

“Want to have a roll in the hay?” he said.

She smiled. She was exhausted from her afternoon of fornicating with Matt, but she felt she owed Hank this much.

“Sure,” she said, spreading her legs.

“I’m all yours, baby.”

ECKY SLEPT BETTER THAN SHE
had in weeks. She was excited to be going to the concert with her dad in a few weeks. She was excited about her schoolwork too. She’d managed to make friends with Sydney and some of the other cool girls at school. They’d been mean to her at first, but after Kyle had adopted her, they’d realized that she had the support of the entire football team. They warmed to her pretty quickly after that.

She was also excited to be single. It had been fun experimenting sexually with Kyle, but now she was more excited to put her sex life on hold. Sex was something that could wait until she was a little older, she thought. It could wait until she found a man she was truly in love with.

Z
OLA JUMPED IN FRIGHT WHEN
she heard Jake enter the house. She’d ben lying in her bed, trying to fall asleep.

“Zola,” Jake called.

Zola didn’t even wonder where he’d been. She was beyond caring about that now. He was going to do whatever he wanted and he wasn’t going to give a thought to her feelings on anything. It wasn’t a real marriage at all. Their entire relationship was a sham and there was no point trying to keep up the pretext any longer.

“Yes,” she cried out, getting out of bed.

“Come down here.”

She could tell from his voice that he’d been drinking. She didn’t dare to think what it was he wanted from her. She got out of the bed and hurried down the stairs in her nightdress.

“Yes, honey,” she said as she entered the living room. She could hear him in there fixing yet another drink.

And then she stopped dead. He wasn’t alone! He’d brought another friend home to
visit
her.

She felt like collapsing to the ground. She couldn’t think. She couldn’t even breathe. She just smiled weakly at Jake and the young man he’d brought with him.

“You know what to do,” Jake said. “You know what I expect.”

She nodded. She knew exactly what he expected.
