“Don’t be shy about it, Emily,” Javier said. He held her
ropes with one hand and slid the other down to strum her clit. She almost
screamed from the pleasure that arrowed through her body. If she’d been able
to, she would have come off him, unable to submit to so much ecstasy.

“Don’t fight it,” he said. She tried not to. She moved
almost gingerly at first. From this position he seemed almost too large. He
stretched her inside completely. Her inner muscles pulsed involuntarily in
response to the fingers teasing her clit, making his fit inside her even
tighter. Emily gasped for breath like a swimmer coming up for air, but she did
as she’d been told and began to rise and fall with a strong and steady rhythm.

The world receded. She felt lightheaded. There was only
him—inside her, around her, holding her up, whispering encouragement. She felt
like she was flying.

One more shivery touch to her clit and Emily bore down hard,
squeezing him as tight as she could. His cock dragged against her inner wall
with exactly the right amount of pressure. She came so hard she didn’t know
what she said. Definitely stuff about love again. Plenty of that. He said it
all back, and then some.

When he finally hauled her back to a sitting position, Emily
could only give him a big smile.

“You look uncharacteristically relaxed,” Javier observed.

She frowned a little. She wanted to find the right words for
him. “I never thought I would meet a man who didn’t need to make me less so he
could be more. I loved the way you used the rope.”

Javier kissed her forehead. “I’m glad. It worked out
especially well, since I don’t really know what I’m supposed to do with a
length of rope in this sense.” He gave her a lopsided smile. “I like that you
submit to me, but I hadn’t exactly been stocking up on the necessary skills.”

“You’re a natural,” Emily said. “Nothing to worry about.”

She would have basked in the glow until he was ready to do
it all over again, except that urgent knocking at the door intruded. Javier
sighed. “Jeez, right now? Really?”

They set about disentangling themselves. He shook the rope
loose of her and kicked it into the corner of the living room, then they both
scrambled for their clothes. “Just a minute!” Emily called. She stumbled a
little on the way to the door, still not fully recovered from the pleasure
Javier had given her. She opened the door and found Fernando Bonavita standing
outside.

Emily did a double take, then turned to address Javier. “I’d
swear your brother
wants
me to take him in. This is the second time he’s
come knocking at my door when I ought to be the last person he wants to see.”

Fernando shoved his hands into his pockets. He’d returned to
his normal style, an impeccable suit that added a sophisticated air to the
muscle and masculine good looks he shared with his brother. “Actually,” he
said, “I
do
want you to take me in. Can we talk about this inside?”

Emily blinked and stepped back, allowing him to pass her. He
greeted his brother with a handshake, then stood at the side of the living
room, his shoulders leaning against the wall. Emily closed and locked the door.
“What the hell are you doing here? I told you to get going.”

Fernando sighed deeply. “Carolina told me she wouldn’t come
away with me. She wants proof that I’m going to live a different life.”

“You love her,” Javier said.

Fernando ducked his head. “More than anything. She’ll only
take me back if I’m willing to ‘face my crimes’. I need your help, Emily. You
said you could call your boss, and that he’d make sure I’m protected in jail.
Did you mean it?”

Emily nodded.

“Then I think you’ll get your fifty grand after all. I hope
you take my brother somewhere nice.”

Emily raised an eyebrow.

“Don’t tell me you two haven’t figured this out yet,”
Fernando said. “Any fool can see from how you look at each other. This isn’t a
temporary thing you have going. When you meet a person who gets inside you, who
really changes you, there is no walking away from it.”

Javier rubbed his face with the back of his hand and signed
theatrically. He shook his head and winked at Emily. “Lecturing again. Believe
it or not, we were in the process of ‘figuring things out’ when you so rudely
interrupted us.”

Fernando straightened, looking around the room. His gaze
fell on the coil of rope and blood rushed to Emily’s face. “I guess it runs in
the family,” Fernando said.

Javier groaned. “That is too much information. I never
wanted to know that.”

Emily watched the two of them and smiled. Brothers. Family.
She’d been alone for so long she’d almost forgotten what it was like to be with
people who really cared about each other. Javier met her eyes and the heat in
his gaze made her inner thighs shiver. She’d forgotten how it felt to have
someone really care about her.

She thought about Scott and her father and of all that could
be mended with time. And she thought about bringing Guy the biggest quarry of
her career. She slipped away to give her boss a call.

Epilogue

Emily held Javier’s hand outside the courthouse. They leaned
together against the outer wall. Spring was still new enough that the warmth in
the air was delicate and a little uncertain.

Javier had seemed happy when Fernando’s release had been
announced, but since then he’d gotten increasingly agitated, shifting from foot
to foot and glancing over his shoulder every few seconds. “How are you doing?”
she asked.

Javier stopped moving and fixed his gaze on her. “I’m good.”
She made to protest but he held up a hand. “Really, I am. I’m looking forward
to seeing him. I’m glad we can be here to pick him up. I’m just aware of how
much has changed. We can’t go back to the way things were before.”

Emily smiled and shook her head, feeling the weight of the
braid he’d put in her hair. “Things have changed for all of us. It’ll take some
getting used to. You’ll have to find something else to talk about.”

“That’s just it. We never used to talk. I never knew
anything about what was going on with him. I don’t want that anymore. I want us
to be adults together, to treat each other like adults.”

She squeezed his hand, sympathizing but not sure of what to
say. She and Scott were still in the early stages of a delicate peace together.
Emily didn’t think that was solid enough for her to claim particular wisdom on
the subject.

Suddenly, Javier’s attention shifted completely. He let out
a low curse and turned his head slowly. Startled, Emily followed his gaze.

Walking up the courthouse steps, dressed in a flirtatious
flowery dress with heels to match, came Carolina. Emily had never seen her that
way before, perfectly made up, the picture of femininity. She’d timed her
entrance exactly, because as she reached the top of the stairs, Fernando
emerged, a small backpack hanging from one hand, wearing one of his suits.

Emily nodded approval. Surely he’d prefer that greeting to
an awkward car ride with his brother’s new lover.

“I feel like I’m watching a movie,” Javier said. Neither
Carolina nor Fernando looked at anything else. He dropped the backpack and
swept her into his arms, kissing her as if she were life and breath itself.

The moment felt too private. Emily turned away. “I’m glad
they’re happy.”

Javier was smiling. “I guess we will have something to talk
about the next time we see each other.”

“Huh?”

“We’ve obviously got something in common.”

“What are you talking about, Javier? She looks like some
kind of goddess. I’m not like her.”

“That’s a good thing,” Javier said, “because I’m not like
Fernando either. My idea of perfection is a little stronger, and a little more
able to kick my ass.”

Emily smiled despite herself.

“Were you looking sad just now because you thought I didn’t
love you like that?” He nodded in the direction of Fernando and Carolina, who
were still kissing.

Emily felt sheepish, but she had to admit the truth. Javier
pulled her into his arms, his mouth claiming her complete surrender. “Emily,”
he whispered in her ear, “I think I’m going to have to take you home and spank
you for that.”
