From somewhere beyond the small circle of happiness surrounding her and Cole, Faith heard her daughter say, “Papa.”
A mother’s instinct made Faith turn to see what her daughter was up to. A wave of shock coursed over her. Hardly able to believe her eyes, she clutched Cole’s hand for support.
Sitting beside her father in the front row was Faith’s mother, holding Lizzie on her lap. For a moment, Faith could only stare. Then her mother smiled. Faith handed Cole her bouquet and reached behind her neck to unclasp her necklace. Silently, she walked to her mother, leaned forward, and then clasped the necklace around her mother’s neck.
“Thank you . . . Mom.”
With tears glistening in her eyes, Celia smiled hesitantly and touched the gold pendant. “Thank you.” It was just a whisper, but for Faith, it was as loud as if her mother had shouted it from the top of Hawks Mountain.
Faith’s heart swelled. For a girl who hadn’t believed in them, it looked as though she had finally found her bright tomorrows.

I can’t believe the summer’s sped by so fast. But at least it ended on a very happy note—Cole Ainsley’s and Faith Chambers’ wedding. I love weddings, especially when it means a happy ending for two people so deserving of it, and Faith and Cole are just such people. It was a beautiful affair, and I’m tuckered out from dancing, and full to busting from eating the delicious dinner they had at the reception and following it up with a big slice of wedding cake.
It just pleased me no end to see Celia Chambers there. I’m not sure she’ll ever shed her holier-than-thou attitude, but at least she’s washed a bit of the starch out of her britches. And Horace looked proud as punch to be giving his lovely daughter away. I have a feeling, with both of them showing Lizzie so much love, that I won’t be babysitting for that little one much anymore. And that makes me a little sad, but also pleased as a spring foal in a field of new grass. The little ones need their grandmas and grandpas.
The only thing about the whole day that bothered me was when I spotted Jacy Brooks sitting all by herself. She hasn’t been the same since her husband Steve died. Lord knows, I understand better than most how it feels to lose the man you love, and how you just want to give up on life and hide. But as my Earl would say, you can’t live in the grave. I was surprised she was even at the wedding. Most times, she just stays locked away in that old farm house they were renovating. Breaks my heart. I’ll say a prayer for her that she finds her way back to happiness.
On a happier note, Faith tells me that she’s gonna use the money her grandmother hid inside that teddy bear to open a nursery school. Lord knows Carson could use one. There are a lot of new parents in town who have to work to make ends meet, and a nursery school run by a loving mother would be just the thing. I’ll never understand why Connie Harrison put the money inside the bear, but it was nothing short of a miracle that that wolf puppy tore that bear apart so they found it. Faith has asked me to work with her at her nursery school, and I’m tickled pink at the prospect of spending the day surrounded by little ones.
Well, I’m worn out from all the excitement today, so I best be off to bed. But I’ll be right here the next time you find yourself visiting my little town.
