Epilogue

Alyssa cracked and peeled the shell off the top of the egg and put it in a cup. She sliced the toast into perfect strips. Gillie sat patiently on the chair, waiting.

They’d all found a home to live in, an abandoned farm house, not far from the settlement that Jesse had been in contact with for more than a year.

No more Scancoms. No more tokens. They’d farm, they’d work for the local townsfolk who banded together against the occasional marauding privateers that ventured a bit further from the city.

The Leaguers were no longer an issue for them. The League of States only worried about controlling the urban areas. They were confident that the privateers could keep the insurrectionaries outside of the cities in check. Little did they know…

She placed the egg in front of Gillie. Torrent walked in, followed by Jesse. They’d become tight. Too bad Omar didn’t fare the same way. Alyssa frowned at the thought of her wayward cousin.

Omar groused and grumbled daily about missing Houston, but Alyssa knew better. It wasn’t that he missed Houston as much as it was that he missed the girlfriend he’d had there. A privateer’s sister. She fought back her scoffing laughter. That girlfriend was the beginning of the family’s problems, though Omar argued differently.

Omar believed if they’d befriended the privateers they’d be doing well in Houston, living unfettered by the Leaguers and financially augmented by the privateers.

First, he’d become more surly as the days had passed, then he seemed to shut down and sink deep within himself, unwilling to communicate, even with his sister Belinda.

There were days when Alyssa became so irritated with him that she had to bite her tongue or she’d have told him to go back to Houston if he missed it that much.

Torrent planted a kiss on her lips and sat down next to Gillie. Picking up a strip of toast, he dipped it in the egg and handed it to Gillie.

Alyssa watched them. Her heart felt so full that she thought it would overflow.

Torrent looked up, caught her watching, winked.

A heat rose in her chest, a slow blush crept to her cheeks as she remembered the night before.

He was the man she never would have imagined could exist.

The perfect man.

lle Thorne spent almost
as much time denying that she wrote romance as she has writing it. It took her a few years to stop being a closet romantic.

O
riginally from Europe

she like to hang out? Near a lake, a beach, preferably with a latte—extra shot of espresso, please! She’s inspired by the everyday men who make dreams come true. She loves a roughneck, especially one with a callous or two on his hands. A man who knows how to fix a car, please a woman, and protect what’s his. Nothing less will do.
